For a portable copy, open Samsung Contacts and export your contacts to internal storage. If you want them available online or on another device, sync them to your Google account instead. Use a SIM only for basic names and numbers, and choose Smart Switch for a broader phone migration.
Which method should you use?

Export contacts to a file on your Samsung phone
To make a one-time, portable copy, use Samsung Contacts’ export option. Samsung’s recent walkthrough demonstrates the steps on a Galaxy S24 FE running One UI 8.0 and Android 16; menu names and locations can vary with the phone, software version, and region. See Samsung’s contacts import and export guide.
- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap More options, then Settings.
- Tap Export contacts.
- Choose Internal storage and complete the export.
Samsung says the exported contacts file can be found in My Files. From there, you can share it using a method such as Quick Share, email, or a message. Keep the file somewhere you can retrieve it if you plan to use it for a transfer or as a backup.
Sync contacts with Google for access across devices
Google sync is the better fit when you want contacts associated with your Google account and available on other devices signed into that account. Samsung’s guide gives this path: Contacts > Menu > Manage contacts > Sync contacts. Turn on the Google account you want to use, then start the sync. The precise labels may differ by device and software version; consult Samsung’s guide to syncing, importing, and exporting contacts.

Check where a contact is saved before relying on sync. A contact stored under My phone or another account will not automatically become a Google contact just because you enable Google sync. Samsung also advises backing up contacts in the Google account before syncing, because sync errors can result in deleted contacts. Its Google contact sync guidance explains the account and storage-location distinction.
What SIM export does—and what it leaves behind
SIM export is an option when the receiving phone relies on a SIM-stored contact list, but it is not a complete backup. Samsung France states: “The name and phone number of the contact will be copied to your SIM card, but other information of the contact may be lost.” Long names or numbers may also be cut off. For full contact records, use a contacts file or account sync instead. See Samsung’s SIM import and export guidance.

Use Smart Switch for a wider backup or phone move
Choose Smart Switch when you are transferring information between phones or backing up more than contacts. Samsung documents backup and restore workflows using a computer or SD card, as well as contact transfer between devices. The available method and compatibility depend on the devices and the source phone. Its Smart Switch backup and restore guide says contact backup covers contacts stored in Samsung, Google, and SIM accounts, but excludes contacts in other external accounts. If the menu labels do not match
- Check your phone’s model and Android or One UI version; Samsung’s demonstrated export steps use a Galaxy S24 FE with One UI 8.0 and Android 16, and Samsung warns that steps can vary.
- Look for the equivalent Contacts menu option if a label or position differs. Do not assume the missing option means your contacts are unavailable.
- Before syncing or migrating, confirm each contact’s storage account so you know which records the chosen route can include.
