Group registrations that belong to the same feature behind a descriptive IServiceCollection extension method, then call that method from Program.cs. Keep individual mappings explicit unless a larger set follows a clear, stable convention that makes assembly scanning worthwhile. Whichever approach you choose, make service lifetimes and duplicate-registration behavior easy to see.

Why the entry point can grow—and what not to register again

ASP.NET Core applications commonly add framework services through host and app-builder patterns. Microsoft notes that .NET templates may register hundreds of services, so a long service collection does not necessarily mean your application has redundant registrations. Add only the framework or application services your application needs; do not copy framework defaults into your own setup without a reason.

For application-owned services, the goal is not to hide every registration. It is to give related registrations a clear owner so Program.cs shows the application’s composition at a useful level.

Use a feature-oriented extension method first

Microsoft’s documented convention is to use one Add{GROUP_NAME} extension method to register the services required by a related feature. The framework itself uses names such as AddOptions. For an application, names like AddPayments, AddApplicationServices, or AddInfrastructure are more informative than a generic AddServices.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, a project that owns order-application services can expose an extension method:

using Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection;

namespace MyApp.Application;

public static class DependencyInjection
{
    public static IServiceCollection AddApplicationServices(
        this IServiceCollection services)
    {
        services.AddScoped<IOrderService, OrderService>();
        services.AddScoped<IOrderValidator, OrderValidator>();
        return services;
    }
}

The application entry point then describes the major registration groups rather than listing every implementation:

var builder = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args);

builder.Services
    .AddApplicationServices()
    .AddInfrastructure(builder.Configuration);

Place each extension method with the project or layer that owns the registrations. The calling project must reference that project, and the extension-method namespace must be in scope. This keeps ownership understandable without requiring a separate registration for every service in the entry point.

When explicit registrations are the better choice

For a small application or a handful of irregular services, direct calls in Program.cs are often clearest. Explicit mappings show exactly which interface resolves to which implementation. An extension method helps when a cohesive group would otherwise make the entry point noisy; it is not a reason to create an abstraction for every single line.

Choose the approach that keeps registrations predictable

Approach Best fit Visibility and mapping control Main trade-off
Explicit registrations in Program.cs Small applications or a small number of services Highest visibility; each service-to-implementation mapping is stated directly. The entry point grows as registrations accumulate.
Feature or project extension methods Most applications with registrations that belong together Mappings remain explicit inside a named group, while the entry point stays concise. Readers may need to open the extension method to inspect the full registration set.
Scrutor assembly scanning Larger sets that follow a stable naming or interface convention Less repetitive mapping code, but the scan rules determine which types become services. Broad or unclear filters make the container’s contents harder to predict.

Prefer explicit feature groups for ordinary application code. Consider scanning only when repeated mappings follow a convention that can be stated narrowly and reviewed as the codebase changes.

Use Scrutor when a stable convention makes scanning worthwhile

Scrutor adds assembly scanning and decoration capabilities to Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection. Its scanning API can select assemblies, filter classes, map them to implemented interfaces or selected service types, and assign lifetimes. The package listing identifies Scrutor 7.0.0; check the NuGet package page for current target frameworks and compatibility before choosing a version.

A scan should answer three questions clearly: which assembly is searched, which concrete classes qualify, and which service type and lifetime each qualifying class receives. For example, a convention that maps repository implementations to their interfaces can be expressed with filters rather than scanning every type in every loaded assembly:

using Scrutor;

builder.Services.Scan(scan => scan
    .FromAssemblyOf<OrderRepository>()
    .AddClasses(classes => classes.AssignableTo<IRepositoryMarker>())
    .AsImplementedInterfaces()
    .WithScopedLifetime());

This example assumes the application has a marker interface and repository types that follow that convention. Adapt the assembly selector, class filter, service mapping, and lifetime to the actual codebase. A broad scan can accidentally register types that were not intended for dependency injection, or expose mappings that are less obvious than explicit calls. Scrutor is an option, not an ASP.NET Core requirement.

Understand duplicate registrations before trying to remove them

Multiple registrations for the same service type are not automatically redundant. With ordinary registrations, resolving a single service returns the last registration; resolving IEnumerable<T> returns the registered services in order. That distinction matters when reviewing a repeated line: it may intentionally replace a default or contribute another handler to a collection.

  • Use TryAdd{Lifetime}, such as TryAddScoped, when a reusable library should supply a default only if the consumer has not registered that service.
  • Use TryAddEnumerable when distinct implementations should accumulate but the same implementation should not be added twice.
  • Use ordinary Add{Lifetime} registrations when replacement or multiple registrations are intentional, and make that intent apparent in the registration group.

These methods address different behaviors; substituting one for another can change what the container resolves.

Keep service lifetimes visible and appropriate

Grouping registrations does not make lifetime choice less important. In web applications, a scoped service is created per request. Entity Framework Core’s AddDbContext registers a context as scoped by default. A singleton is shared and must be thread-safe; it should not directly capture a scoped service.

  • Scoped: appropriate for services whose instance should be shared during a web request, including the usual DbContext registration.
  • Singleton: shared across requests, so its state and dependencies must be safe for concurrent use. Do not choose it merely to make registrations simpler.
  • Scoped work from a singleton: when needed, create an explicit scope through IServiceScopeFactory instead of injecting a scoped dependency directly.

For more detail on registration semantics, defaults, and lifetime behavior, see Microsoft’s service registration guidance and service lifetime guidance.
