To reduce the risk of buying fake cards, misleading mystery packs, or searched sealed products, verify the exact item and its contents against Pokémon’s official information, treat an unusually low price as a warning, and keep payment and any dispute within the marketplace. No photo or packaging check can guarantee that every sealed pack is genuine or untouched.
What Pokémon product scams can look like
Reseller risks include counterfeit cards or booster packs, listings whose photos and descriptions do not match, and sealed products that have been searched or altered. Some sellers also offer independently assembled “lottery” or “high odds” packs. Pokémon’s Japanese official TCG site has warned that such packs may have a low chance—or no chance—of containing the advertised desirable cards. That notice describes particular Japanese resale circumstances; it is an example of the risk, not evidence of how common it is elsewhere.
Pokémon Support says fake booster packs can be difficult to distinguish from genuine ones: “Often, fake booster packs are very difficult to discern from the real ones.” It also warns that a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail is a reason to be cautious. Neither a low price nor an odd-looking listing proves fraud on its own.

Confirm the exact product and promised contents
Compare the listing’s product name, set, language, edition, and included items with Pokémon’s official product information and images. Check that the photos show the item being sold and that the description agrees with them. Be especially careful with vague terms such as “mystery,” “custom,” or “high odds”; these may describe an independently assembled product rather than an official Pokémon release. Pokémon’s official product images can help you compare packaging and decks: Pokémon Support: Did I purchase fake or counterfeit cards?

Use price as a warning signal, not a verdict
Where Pokémon provides a suggested retail price, compare it with the asking price and consider current market context. Pokémon Support warns that a price dramatically below suggested retail may be suspicious. A discount by itself does not establish that a product is counterfeit, so use it as a reason to inspect the rest of the listing more carefully.
Look at the seller and the evidence in the listing
Review transaction history, feedback specific to similar products, return terms, and the clarity of the listing. If you ask about the item’s source or condition, look for a direct, consistent answer. Pokémon Center Support says Pokémon TCG cards are distributed through existing partnerships with mass-market retailers, but its page is not a complete directory of authorized sellers. Do not assume that a reseller is authorized—or unauthorized—based on that information alone: Pokémon Center Support: Where can I buy Pokémon TCG cards?

Treat sealed packaging as limited evidence
A convincing-looking seal does not prove that a pack is authentic or that a box has not been searched. Pokémon warns that counterfeit boosters may be hard to identify, while its Japanese resale notice describes packs or boxes searched to remove valuable foil cards. Do not rely on a single seal detail as conclusive unless Pokémon has issued reliable guidance for that exact product.

Before buying on a marketplace, read the applicable return and buyer-protection terms, including deadlines and eligibility, and pay through that marketplace’s checkout. For example, eBay prohibits counterfeit items, including unauthorized trading-card reprints. Its Money Back Guarantee generally requires that the order be purchased and paid for through eBay and that the buyer follow the applicable requirements and deadlines. Terms can vary by eBay site and transaction, so check the rules for the specific order rather than assuming the same protection applies everywhere: eBay Counterfeit Item Policy and eBay Money Back Guarantee policy.

A practical way to compare two listings
Use the same checks for each listing instead of relying on one reassuring detail:
- Product identity: Does the name, set, language, edition, packaging, and stated contents match official product information?
- Price: Is the price plausible against suggested retail, where available, and current market context?
- Seller evidence: Are the photos, description, feedback, return terms, and answers about source and condition clear and consistent?
- Sealed-product risk: Is the item a sealed pack or box that could be counterfeit or searched, despite its appearance?
- Recourse: Can you pay through the platform, and have you checked the reporting, refund, and dispute terms for this transaction?
These checks can help you make a more informed choice, but they cannot remotely authenticate every sealed product.

What to do if you suspect a fake or tampered product
- Preserve the evidence. Before opening or altering the item, save the listing, order details, seller messages, packaging, and clear photos. This can help document what was offered and what arrived.
- Contact the seller through the platform. Use recorded messaging and describe the mismatch or concern. Keep the conversation and follow the platform’s stated process and deadlines.
- Report the item or request a refund through the marketplace. Choose the relevant counterfeit or item-not-as-described route. On eBay, consult the policy and eligibility for your specific transaction; off-platform payment does not meet its Money Back Guarantee checkout requirement.
- Report suspected counterfeit merchandise to Pokémon. Pokémon Support’s form accepts a product description and allows you to provide the retailer’s address and website: Pokémon Support contact form.
- Ask a trading-card specialist to assess a suspicious card. Pokémon Support recommends consulting a specialist and notes that counterfeit cards can sometimes be seen through when held to bright light. That check is not a guarantee of authenticity, particularly for sealed products. Do not resell an item you believe is counterfeit.
