Use a browser automation library and capture only after the interface reaches a known, repeatable state. In Playwright, page.screenshot() captures the viewport, fullPage: true captures the scrollable page, and locator.screenshot() captures one component. For visual regression, Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() creates a baseline and compares future runs against it. Puppeteer offers the analogous Page.screenshot() API.

Choose the screenshot scope first

The right capture target depends on what you are reviewing. A viewport image represents what a user sees without scrolling. A full-page image exposes below-the-fold layout, while an element image isolates a component and avoids unrelated page changes. A buffer is useful when your test must upload or process the image instead of writing a file immediately.

Goal Capture Typical use
Check the visible screen page.screenshot() Smoke tests and release artifacts
Check the entire document page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) Long landing pages and layout review
Check one component locator.screenshot() Headers, dialogs, cards and widgets
Process the image in code page.screenshot() without a path Upload, hashing or custom analysis

Automate captures with Playwright

Install and create a test

Install Playwright Test in your JavaScript or TypeScript project, then create a test file such as tests/screenshots.spec.js. The following test produces both a viewport and a full-page artifact:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { test } from '@playwright/test';

test('capture homepage', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/home.png' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/home-full.png', fullPage: true });
});

The path determines the output file. Use a separate artifact directory per run in CI so parallel jobs do not overwrite one another. Replace the example URL with the page under test.

Capture a single interface element

const header = page.locator('header');
await header.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/header.png' });

A locator screenshot waits for the target to be actionable and captures its rendered bounds. Prefer a stable selector such as a semantic element, role, or dedicated test identifier rather than a generated class name. For a modal, wait until it is visible before taking the image.

Capture after authentication or setup

Screenshot calls do not make an application state deterministic. Navigate, sign in through your test flow, select the required account or feature, wait for the relevant data, and then capture. A practical sequence is:

  1. Open the URL and wait for navigation to finish.
  2. Complete login, consent, feature-flag selection or other setup.
  3. Wait for a selector that proves the real UI is ready.
  4. Wait for fonts and asynchronous data used in the image.
  5. Disable or mask moving and personalized content.
  6. Write the screenshot to a unique artifact path.

Waiting for a fixed delay alone is fragile: a fast run wastes time, while a slow API response can still leave a partial page. Use a selector, an application-ready signal, or a network-idle strategy where it accurately represents readiness.

Use screenshots for visual regression

Create and compare a baseline

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('landing page visual contract', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png');
});

On the first run, Playwright Test creates a reference image. Later runs compare the current rendering with that baseline. The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots are identical before comparison, reducing failures caused by a still-changing page. Screenshot assertions also provide animation controls; their default handling disables animations for the assertion.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Make a baseline policy

  • Store snapshots with the test code and review changes in pull requests.
  • Update a reference only after confirming that the application change is intentional.
  • Keep browser, operating system, fonts, viewport, device scale factor and headless settings consistent.
  • Use the same test data and locale when those values appear in the image.
  • Decide which pixel differences are meaningful before adding a tolerance or masking rule.

A visual test is a contract, not merely an image archive: the baseline, rendering environment and approval policy all determine whether a diff is useful.

Stabilize the browser state before capture

Control environment drift

Rendering can change with the host operating system, browser version, installed fonts, hardware, power conditions and headless mode. Pin the browser version used by CI, use a consistent viewport and device scale factor, and avoid comparing a developer laptop’s snapshot directly with a different CI image unless that difference is intentional.

Stop motion and transient UI

Disable CSS transitions, Web Animations and carousels for visual assertions. Freeze clocks and use fixed test data where possible. Mask or hide timestamps, rotating advertisements, random identifiers, live counters, cursors and other pixels that are not part of the design contract. If a component is intentionally animated, capture a defined frame rather than allowing timing to decide the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick the narrowest useful scope

Compare a locator when a component is the subject of the test. Use a viewport capture when the visible composition matters. Use fullPage only when content below the fold is relevant; long pages can include lazy-loaded regions and increase capture time and diff size.

Playwright or Puppeteer?

Playwright combines browser automation with an integrated test-runner workflow and the toHaveScreenshot assertion. It is a natural choice when you want page, locator and baseline comparison in one tool. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library that automates Chrome and Firefox through the Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi, and its Page.screenshot() method is a straightforward choice when your existing scripts, runner or browser coverage already use Puppeteer.

Choose based on the surrounding test runner, supported browsers, language/runtime and whether built-in visual assertions are valuable. Both still require deterministic data and rendering conditions.

Common failures and fixes

The screenshot is blank or incomplete

Cause: capture happened before the application rendered, an iframe or API request failed, or lazy content had not loaded. Fix: wait for a meaningful ready selector, verify the response and data state, and capture only after the component is visible. For a full page, scroll or otherwise trigger lazy regions when the application requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Images or fonts differ between runs

Cause: external resources, font fallback, a different browser build or a different host. Fix: pin the environment, make assets available during the test, wait for fonts, and run comparisons on the same CI image.

Flaky diffs show moving pixels

Cause: animation, clocks, ads, counters or random data. Fix: disable motion, freeze or seed data, mask volatile selectors, and remove irrelevant third-party content from the comparison.

Full-page captures are unexpectedly tall

Cause: the page contains expanded content, sticky elements or an unbounded list. Fix: establish the intended state before capture, constrain test data, and use an element or viewport screenshot when the full document is not the requirement.

A baseline fails after no code change

Cause: environment drift rather than an application change. Fix: compare browser and OS versions, fonts, viewport, scale factor, locale, timezone and headless settings before accepting a new snapshot.

Performance, storage and review practices

Full-page images consume more time and storage than component captures. Keep routine checks focused on the smallest scope that proves the behavior, and reserve full-page images for pages where below-the-fold layout is part of the contract. Use deterministic artifact names, retain failure screenshots and traces in CI, and clean old artifacts so storage does not grow without limit.

Run independent pages in parallel when the host has enough CPU and memory, but do not share mutable accounts or data between workers. A screenshot that is fast but taken before the UI is ready is less valuable than a slower, reproducible capture.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It can accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing result.

For a direct capture, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation and use:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Or Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page and element captures, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, selector hiding, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture screenshots in a language other than JavaScript?

The workflow is language-independent, but the examples here use Playwright’s JavaScript test runner. Use the browser library and test runner that match your project’s runtime.

Should every visual test use a full-page screenshot?

No. Use a locator for a component, a viewport for the visible composition, and full-page capture only when below-the-fold layout matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a visual diff reviewer check first?

Confirm the page state and rendering environment before judging the pixels. Many apparent regressions come from fonts, browser versions, motion or volatile data.
