Use a scheduled browser probe. At each interval, launch a fixed Chromium environment, open the URL, wait for a deterministic readiness condition, save a timestamped screenshot and probe metadata, then send separate alerts for navigation failures and visual changes. A screenshot probe tests loading and rendered content—not just whether an HTTP server answered.
What a screenshot uptime probe checks
An HTTP check can report status 200 while a page is blank, blocked by a client-side error, or missing critical content. A browser probe follows the user path: navigation, JavaScript execution, rendering and screenshot capture. Treat the result as two signals:
- Availability: navigation errors, failed requests, readiness timeouts or an unusable page.
- Visual state: a screenshot that differs from an approved baseline.
Alert these signals independently. An outage requires immediate response; a planned redesign should produce a reviewable visual-diff event instead of an availability incident.

- Choose a schedule and regions. Run from cron, a CI schedule or a managed job runner. For geographically distributed sites, probe from more than one region and record the region with every artifact.
- Fix the rendering environment. Pin the browser version, operating system image, fonts, viewport, device scale factor and headless mode. Playwright warns that differences in these settings, hardware and power conditions can change screenshots. See the Playwright snapshot documentation.
- Navigate and wait deliberately. Use a selector that proves the page is ready, such as a dashboard heading, rather than an arbitrary sleep. A network-idle wait can help, but applications with long polling may never become idle.
- Capture and persist evidence. Store the image with an ISO-8601 timestamp, URL, probe region, browser version, viewport, navigation result and comparison result. Apply retention and access controls appropriate to the page.
- Compare with a baseline. Create a reference image after an approved release. Every later capture is compared with that reference, with dynamic regions masked or hidden.
- Route alerts. Send browser/navigation failures to the uptime channel and visual diffs to a review channel. Include a link to the screenshot and the metadata needed to reproduce it.
Playwright: scheduled capture and visual comparison
Playwright exposes page.screenshot() for direct capture and toHaveScreenshot() for baseline assertions. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing, reducing noise from transient rendering.

Install a pinned probe

});Replace the illustrative hundred token with a justified integer such as 100; thresholds should reflect your page, not hide genuine regressions. Generate the first reference intentionally, review it, and commit it as a controlled change. Playwright supports full-page and element screenshots, animation handling, masks, injected styles, thresholds and device-versus-CSS scale options.
Make captures deterministic
- Disable CSS and Web Animations or wait until the animation finishes.
- Mask timestamps, rotating promotions, ads, avatars and user-specific data.
- Use test accounts and fixed timezone, locale and seeded data.
- Wait for images and fonts that affect layout; lazy-loaded content may require scrolling or an explicit readiness marker.
- Capture the same viewport and scale on every run.
Puppeteer: a lightweight Node.js alternative
Puppeteer is practical when an existing service already uses its API. Page.screenshot() returns image bytes (or base64 when requested), which you can write to storage and pass to an image-diff library.

Scheduler choices
- Cron: simple for a worker you operate; use a lock so overlapping runs do not exhaust memory.
- CI schedule: convenient for code-owned baselines and pull-request review, but verify that runners have stable fonts and browser versions.

Record URL, region, browser and OS image, viewport, device scale, start/end times, navigation status, HTTP response where available, readiness selector, screenshot object key, baseline identifier, diff metrics and alert state. Never put credentials in filenames or query strings.

Protect captured pages
Screenshots can contain personal information, tokens displayed in dashboards or customer data. Mask sensitive selectors before capture, encrypt object storage, restrict access, define retention, and delete artifacts on schedule. Treat baseline updates as code or configuration changes requiring review.

Should I alert on every pixel difference?
No. Mask known dynamic regions and set a justified diff threshold, then route the remaining changes for review. Keep navigation and visual alerts as separate policies.
How often should a screenshot probe run?
Choose an interval based on the incident-detection time you need, page cost and acceptable load. Start conservatively, measure runtime and overlap, then adjust.
Can a screenshot prove an API is healthy?
It proves that a browser reached and rendered the tested page. Monitor backend APIs, queues and dependencies separately when they are part of your availability objective.
