When a law enforcement agency asks for your social media presence, it is asking one question: does anything publicly associated with you bear on whether you are suited to the job? In California, where peace-officer candidates must be subject to a social-media search, that means content relevant to suitability, such as bias-related statements, public expressions of hate, illegal activity, misconduct, and dishonesty, judged in context rather than by keyword. Auditing your own accounts before an investigator does is the most useful preparation you can do. It does not require deleting anything.
Jurisdiction caveat. Rules and procedures vary by state, agency, and position. The most detailed official guidance here comes from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), which governs peace-officer candidates in that state. A Georgia Bureau of Investigation policy is included as one agency’s example of a narrower approach. Neither describes a national standard. Your target agency’s written applicant instructions and applicable law control, and a licensed attorney in your state can answer questions about your own situation.
What investigators are looking for
Suitability, not a list of banned words
California POST guidance frames the review around substance, context, frequency, and recency. It also states that positive traits can mitigate past behavior. A crude joke and a post advocating violence are not the same kind of problem, and an investigator is expected to weigh them differently. An audit that only hunts for offensive vocabulary will miss the questions that actually matter and will flag items that do not.
The categories that carry weight
The POST materials point to conduct bearing on suitability. For applicants, the categories to check first are:
#1 Best Overall
- Filter Dimensions: Width: 11 15/16" (304 mm), Height: 7 1/2" (190 mm), Diagonal: 14.1" (358.14 mm) - SightPro Blackout Privacy Filter is engineered to be compatible with Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Samsung, and other laptop brands. Please verify your screen's width and height measurements before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size. [Not optimized for touchscreens.]
- Two Attachment Options - Installs in minutes. Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any screen. Option 2 uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the filter on and off the screen as needed.
- Superior Privacy and Anti Glare - Our advanced multi-layered film filter blacks out your screen when viewing from the side, while maintaining a crystal clear screen straight-on. It also protects your eyes from harmful glare, UV, and blue light. [Note: It does not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of the distance.]
- Perfect for Travel and Open Workspaces - Our computer screen privacy filter is the ideal solution for healthcare providers, mobile workers, commuters, students, and business travelers. Now you can stay compliant and safeguard sensitive corporate information while working in airplanes, subways, airports and public areas.
- Package Contents - Each package includes one privacy screen shield filter, two sets of clear adhesive strips, two sets of slide mount tabs, and a microfiber cleaning cloth. Buy with confidence – located in the US, Sight Pro specializes in providing best-in-class privacy solutions to individuals, small businesses, corporations, government, and educational institutions. Our privacy screens are Section 889 and TAA compliant.
- Bias-related behavior, including bias against people because of race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.
- Hate-group involvement or public expressions of hate.
- Illegal activity.
- Misconduct.
- Dishonesty.
Isolated content in these categories is not automatically disqualifying, and the guidance does not say that it is. What makes it significant depends on the assessment described in the audit steps below.
How two agencies frame the search
The two sources cited here take different approaches. The table shows what each states. It is not a comparison of which agency is stricter.

- Compatible Models: Width: 13 9/16" (13.5 inch/344 mm), Height: 7 5/8" (7.6 inch/194 mm), Diagonal: 15.6" (396.24 mm) widescreen laptops which have a 16:9 aspect ratio. Not touchscreen compatible !!! Not fit for 16:10.Do NOT rely solely on your laptop’s diagonal size when ordering. Use a ruler to measure your screen’s visible area (excluding the black bezels). If the width reads 344mm and height reads 194mm, this filter is a perfect match for your device.
- Keep Information Privacy: Effective "black out" privacy from side views outside the 60-degree viewing angle. Designed for optical clarity when viewing from the front, a person not at the front of the screen can only see the dark side of the screen, so it protects buisness secrets and personal privacy
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 - 495nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain. Our laptop privacy screen also helps keep your screen safe from dust and scratches
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in high traffic areas such as open work spaces, airports, airplanes, commuter trains, coffee shops and other public places, etc
- Easy Installation: Choose between 2 simple Options; Slide-On/Off or Mounted. Not touchscreen compatible
| Element | California POST (peace-officer candidates) | Georgia Bureau of Investigation policy (one agency’s example) |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Required social-media search for peace-officer candidates; the requirement took effect August 1, 2022 | Agency policy, not general law |
| Scope of search | Material relevant to suitability, documented with the sites searched, URLs, and findings | Public-domain content only; applicants are not asked to access private profiles |
| Passwords and privacy | Searches must comply with state and federal law; the requirement does not authorize violating privacy rights | Passwords are not required |
| Notice to applicant | Not stated in the POST materials cited here | Applicants will be notified |
| Political, religious, or social views | Not stated in the POST materials cited here | Excluded unless directly connected to criminal conduct |
Use the table as a question list for your own agency. Ask what it will search, whether it will request passwords, and how it will tell you what it found.

- Inventory every account and identifier. List current and dormant accounts on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, Discord, Twitch, Reddit, Quora, Snapchat, and LinkedIn. Include blogs, forums, video channels, and public comments you have left. Note old usernames, handles, name variants, and any older email addresses tied to those accounts. Use only accounts and information you control. Expected result: a table of platform, handle, visibility, and approximate last-activity date.
- Review as a stranger would. Sign out, or open a browser window that is not logged into the account, and look at what the public sees. Check the profile photo, bio, and external links, then scroll through posts, comments, reposts, tagged photos, videos, memes, public group participation, and any public likes or endorsements the platform shows. Go back as far as the account allows, not just to recent posts.
- Check attribution and context for each flagged item. Determine whether you wrote, posted, shared, or endorsed the content. Identify whether it is a quotation, satire, or a reshare with commentary you did not add. Check whether it has been edited, and read the surrounding thread, because the replies can change what a post means.
- Sort flagged items into the categories above. Mark any item that falls in a category, and note whether similar items appear more than once.
- Tighten personal-content exposure. Review the platform privacy settings for who can see your posts, friend or follower lists, and who can tag you. Update old bios and links. Remove unintended public exposure if you want to. Treat this as account hygiene, not as a way to keep relevant public material out of view.
- Document what you find. For each item, record the platform, the URL, the date it was posted, the date you captured it, and a screenshot or printout. California’s documentation expectation calls for sites searched, URLs, and findings, supported by screenshots, printouts, or links. Keeping the same kind of record lets you answer accurately if you are asked about a specific item.
- Write private explanation notes for borderline items. For each item that may prompt questions, note when it was posted, what was happening at the time, the full context, what has changed since, and any positive conduct that offsets it. Keep these notes private. Follow the agency’s instructions on whether and how to disclose anything.
Assessing a borderline post
Use these six questions to decide how much weight an item deserves. They reflect the factors in California POST’s investigator guidance and FAQ. They are not a scoring system, and they do not predict a hiring decision.
| Question | What to ask yourself | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance to suitability | Does this bear on the duties, integrity, or bias-related conduct of the job? | Review is tied to suitability, not to offensiveness alone |
| Substance and full context | What did it actually say, and what came before and after it? | California guidance emphasizes substance and context |
| Attribution | Did you author or endorse it, or only encounter or reshare it? | Content you did not write or endorse must be assessed as such |
| Frequency | Is this a single item or part of a pattern? | Guidance points to frequency as a factor |
| Recency | How long ago was it, and what has changed since? | Guidance points to recency and evidence of changed behavior |
| Mitigating conduct | What positive traits or conduct does your record show? | California guidance says positive attributes can mitigate past behavior |
Does a private account change the picture?
Many applicants ask whether they should delete an Instagram account that is already set to private. The sources do not establish that deleting accounts is required, and they do not establish that having no social media improves a candidacy. What they do establish is narrower. A privacy setting is not a guarantee that information never reaches an agency, and the official sources do not say exactly what each agency can access.

For that reason, the audit should be the core step, not deletion. If you are considering removing content you may be asked about, ask the agency’s background contact first rather than deleting in the middle of the process. Removing content during an open application can look like concealment, even when the motive is innocent.
Passwords, privacy, and what is off-limits
- Do not share passwords or log into any account you do not control. The Georgia example says applicants are not required to provide passwords. California’s required search does not authorize violating privacy or other laws.
- Do not create fake accounts, impersonate anyone, or try to get around privacy controls to view content.
- Know the employer-side limits. The POST FAQ states: “It does not, however, require nor permit infringement of a candidate’s privacy rights. All searches must be conducted in accordance with state and federal laws.” It also states: “Employers should not be provided information that is protected under fair employment laws, privacy provisions, or any information that is not relevant to peace officer suitability.”
- Expect an unsettled legal question on one point. POST Bulletin 2022-34 says whether California Labor Code section 980 applies to public-sector employers is not clear-cut, and it urges departments to consult counsel when shaping policy. Do not treat that open question as settled in either direction.
Neither the cited sources nor this article supports a nationwide rule that police can or cannot ask for your account information. The answer depends on the jurisdiction and the agency.

What the 2022 California State Auditor review found
A 2022 report by the California State Auditor reviewed selected departments’ social-media review practices. Across the five hiring decisions reviewed at each department, one applicant among those with public social-media accounts had biased content at the time of the Auditor’s review. The report also found that the departments’ records did not allow the Auditor to determine whether the departments had observed or considered that information. Its findings and limitations concern only the departments it selected and do not measure law enforcement hiring nationally.
Quick Recap
What is not established
- No broadly applicable published statistic describes how many agencies run social-media reviews or how many applicants are affected.
- The cited guidance does not say which platforms, archives, or search tools a given agency uses.
- Rules for federal agencies and for most local departments outside California are not covered here. Check the target agency’s own published instructions.
