To give a USB drive a predictable letter in Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, or Server 2008, locate its volume in Disk Management and add or change the letter. You can also use DiskPart with list volume, select volume, and assign. First confirm you have selected the USB volume: a drive letter belongs to a volume, and DiskPart commands operate on the object currently in focus.

Choose Disk Management or DiskPart

Method Interface and use Key consideration
Disk Management Visual dialog; generally the easier option for a one-time change. You must identify the correct USB volume before changing its assignment. Menu labels can vary between these Windows versions.
DiskPart Command line; useful for administration or repeatable instructions. You explicitly select a volume, and commands act on that focused object. A mistaken selection can affect the wrong volume.

Change the letter in Disk Management

  1. Open Computer Management and select Disk Management. In later classic Windows interfaces, you may also be able to open Disk Management from the Start menu. On Windows XP or Server 2003, Microsoft’s legacy instructions use Computer Management.
  2. Find the USB volume by checking its size, filesystem, label, and removable status. Do not rely on a drive letter alone.
  3. Right-click the volume and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths. In the legacy wizard documented for Windows XP Professional and Server 2003, the relevant step is named Assign Drive Letter or Path.
  4. Choose Add if the volume has no letter, or Change to replace its current letter. Select an unused letter and confirm.

The precise screens and wording are not established as identical across XP, Server 2003, Vista, and Server 2008. Use the labels shown by your version. Microsoft’s current Change a Drive Letter guidance describes the dialog for newer Windows releases; its legacy guidance covers Windows XP Professional and Server 2003.

Assign a letter with DiskPart

Use an elevated Command Prompt. Microsoft says you must be in the local Administrators group or have similar permissions to run DiskPart. The command sequence below only lists, selects, and assigns; do not add disk-cleaning, formatting, or partition-changing commands for a simple letter change.

  1. Start DiskPart by entering diskpart.
  2. Show the volumes with list volume. Identify the USB volume by its details before proceeding.
  3. Select it with select volume <number>, replacing <number> with the volume number shown for the USB drive.
  4. Assign an available letter with assign letter=E, replacing E with the letter you want.
  5. Enter exit to leave DiskPart.
diskpart
list volume
select volume <number>
assign letter=E
exit

Microsoft’s DiskPart overview explains that selecting an object gives it focus, so subsequent commands operate on that object. The assign command reference says: “Using the assign command, you can change the drive letter associated with a removable drive.” You can also run assign without specifying a letter to request the next available one.

When a letter cannot be assigned

  • The letter is already in use: Choose another unused letter. DiskPart reports an error if the requested letter conflicts with one already assigned.
  • The command or option is unavailable: Check that the intended volume is selected and that your account has suitable privileges. The selected object must be a volume with focus.
  • The volume type is not eligible: Microsoft says letters cannot be assigned to system volumes, boot volumes, volumes holding the paging file, OEM partitions, or GPT partitions other than basic data partitions.
  • Disk Management does not offer the action: The selected object may not be an accessible, initialized volume, or the account may not have suitable privileges. Exact screens for every legacy version are not documented here.

If the USB drive is missing from Explorer

Check Disk Management to see whether Windows lists the USB volume. If it is listed without a letter, assigning one may make it accessible through a drive path. If Windows does not expose a volume there, changing a drive letter is not established as a fix; letter assignment acts on a volume that can be identified and selected.

Do not change the Windows or application drive casually

Keep this procedure to removable data volumes. Microsoft warns in its Change a Drive Letter guidance that changing the letter of a drive containing Windows or apps may cause apps to have trouble running or finding that drive.
