Assess Wesfarmers shares by looking beyond the company’s diversified portfolio: test how its retail earnings, cash flow, debt, dividends and growth projects might hold up under pressure. Its FY2026 results showed higher revenue and adjusted earnings, but also lower operating cash flow, higher net debt and a lithium refinery ramp-up still in progress. Those disclosures help identify risks; they do not establish whether the shares are fairly valued or suitable for a particular investor.

What does Wesfarmers’ portfolio diversification protect against?

Wesfarmers operates across large retail businesses as well as health, chemicals and fertilisers, industrial and safety operations, and a lithium joint venture. A setback in one activity need not affect every division equally, but a range of businesses does not eliminate group-wide exposure to weaker economic conditions, funding pressures, supply-chain disruption or execution failures.

Retail is a major part of the earnings mix, so the portfolio should not be treated as insulated from household budgets or consumer confidence. Industrial, health and lithium activities bring different risks, including input costs, regulation, commodity prices and project delivery. Diversification is useful context, not proof that the shares are low risk.

What do the FY2026 results say about earnings quality?

Wesfarmers announced its FY2026 results on 27 August 2026 for the year ended 30 June 2026. Revenue was A$47,274 million, up 3.4 per cent, and statutory net profit after tax (NPAT) was A$2,874 million, down 1.8 per cent from reported FY2025. The company also reported that FY2026 NPAT excluding significant items was A$2,874 million, compared with A$2,653 million on an adjusted FY2025 basis, an increase of 8.3 per cent. The adjusted comparison accounts for significant items in the prior year; it is not the same as comparing the two reported statutory figures.

Reported earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) was A$4,493 million, up 0.6 per cent. Excluding significant items, EBIT was A$4,493 million against A$4,186 million, up 7.3 per cent. These measures give different views of performance because the comparisons treat significant items differently. When assessing the trend, check the basis of comparison rather than relying on a single growth rate.

Where did divisional earnings move?

The FY2026 segment comparisons below exclude significant items. Earnings before tax (EBT) amounts are for the year ended 30 June 2026.

Division FY2026 EBT Change
Bunnings Group A$2,455 million Up 5.1 per cent
Kmart Group A$1,109 million Up 6.0 per cent
WesCEF A$473 million Up 18.5 per cent
Officeworks A$165 million Down 22.2 per cent
Wesfarmers Health A$76 million Up 18.8 per cent
Industrial and Safety A$76 million Down 26.9 per cent

Bunnings and Kmart are substantial contributors, making their trading and margin trends important to group performance. Segment boundaries also changed: Blackwoods and Workwear Group moved into Bunnings Group effective 1 July 2026. That transition, along with transformation costs at Officeworks and ongoing transformation at Wesfarmers Health, means historical segment figures may not map neatly onto the new organisation.

How exposed are retail earnings to consumer and cost pressures?

Wesfarmers identified uncertainty in inflation, house prices, interest rates and tax settings as factors affecting consumer sentiment. Its FY2026 outlook also said higher labour, energy and supply-chain costs were expected to persist through FY2027. These conditions can affect both sales—especially discretionary purchases—and the margins earned on those sales.

For Bunnings, Kmart and Officeworks, assess whether customer demand, competitive pricing and value perceptions are holding up while wages, freight, energy and other costs remain elevated. Also consider store and digital execution, inventory availability and how effectively the businesses manage stock. The company said it intended to mitigate cost pressure through productivity, digitisation and technology; treat those as plans to assess against later margin and cash-flow results, not as guaranteed offsets.

Can cash flow and the balance sheet absorb investment needs?

Operating cash flow was A$4,272 million in FY2026, down 6.5 per cent, while free cash flow was A$3,992 million. Net financial debt rose 25.1 per cent to A$5,295 million, and debt to EBITDA increased to 1.9 times from 1.7 times. The results attributed part of the lower cash flow to working-capital investment in WesCEF and Health, including inventory built to address market and supply disruption. Inventory can support product availability, but it also ties up cash until it is sold and collected.

Wesfarmers expected net capital expenditure of A$1,300–1,500 million in FY2027 and said borrowing costs would be higher, citing higher net debt, increased capital expenditure and a higher cost of funds. The risk question is whether operating cash generation can support working capital, investment, debt service and shareholder distributions without an unwanted deterioration in the balance sheet.

  • Track operating cash flow alongside earnings, working-capital movements and inventory levels.
  • Compare net debt and debt to EBITDA across reporting periods, and note the company’s explanation for the change.
  • Watch whether capital spending is followed by the expected operating benefits and cash returns.
  • Consider the effect of higher interest costs and access to funding, rather than treating debt as a stand-alone ratio.

Wesfarmers’ 2026 half-year financial statements classify financial-instrument risks as liquidity risk, market risk—including foreign currency, interest rates and commodity prices—and credit risk. Those categories help frame what to monitor, but a ratio or risk label alone does not determine the group’s capacity to withstand stress.

What does the dividend figure establish—and what does it not?

Wesfarmers reported FY2026 ordinary fully franked dividends totalling A$2.22 per share, up 7.8 per cent. Separately, a 150 cents-per-share capital management distribution was paid in December 2025, comprising a capital return and a special dividend. That one-off distribution should not be confused with the ordinary annual dividend.

A reported past dividend does not establish that future payments will be maintained or increased, nor does it establish an investor’s yield at a current share price. To assess dividend risk, compare future distributions with realised earnings and cash generation, while allowing for investment requirements, debt costs and the board’s capital-allocation decisions.

How should investors assess Wesfarmers’ lithium exposure?

Wesfarmers reported that Mt Holland produced 209 kilotonnes of spodumene concentrate in FY2026, above guidance and nameplate capacity. That mining and concentrate result is distinct from the downstream refinery’s production of qualified lithium hydroxide for sale. The refinery ramp-up was affected by intermittent odour issues during the year; the company said mitigation work began late in FY2026 and expected production rates to accelerate in the second half of FY2027 as further solutions were implemented. Product qualification with offtake partners was to continue during ramp-up. These are management’s expectations, not achieved outcomes or a guaranteed schedule.

The exposure therefore includes more than the lithium price. Consider operating costs, ramp-up rates, product quality and customer qualification, demand, capital needs and the possibility that project assumptions change. In its half-year statements, Wesfarmers said there were no impairment indicators for Mt Holland at 31 December 2025, while noting that the cash-generating unit’s valuation was sensitive to significant adverse changes in lithium hydroxide prices, discount rates, operating costs and production volumes. The absence of impairment indicators at that reporting date does not remove future impairment risk.

Which wider operating and external risks should be checked?

Wesfarmers’ 2025 Annual Report identified risk categories including digital disruption, portfolio management, major infrastructure and physical security, product distribution and safety, conduct and reputation, human rights and modern slavery in operations and supply chains, process safety, clinical governance, franchisee compliance, geopolitical supply-chain and input-price impacts, increased use of AI, and liquidity and funding access. These are company-identified exposures, not evidence that each risk has materialised. The 2025 list should not be read as a complete register for FY2026.

The company’s 2025 climate disclosure describes both physical and transition risks. Physical risk drivers include extreme rain, heat, dry conditions and fire weather; Wesfarmers said extreme weather had caused property damage, operating and supply-chain disruption, and effects on stores, team members, customers and communities. Transition exposure varies with each business’s model, emissions profile, footprint and value chain. When reviewing climate risk, look for effects on specific operations and supply chains rather than assuming every division faces the same exposure.

How can you compare Wesfarmers’ risks with another investment?

Use consistent measures and time periods so the comparison reflects differences in business exposure rather than differences in reporting. A practical framework is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Valuation and expected return: compare the assumptions built into each investment’s price. Wesfarmers’ company results do not establish a current share valuation or peer-relative attractiveness.
  • Earnings mix: assess how much performance depends on retail and how much comes from industrial, health and lithium activities.
  • Economic sensitivity: compare exposure to discretionary spending, household budgets, housing conditions and interest rates.
  • Balance sheet: examine net debt, debt to EBITDA, interest costs, liquidity and expected investment needs on a consistent basis.
  • Cash flow and distributions: distinguish earnings from cash after working capital and capital expenditure; separate recurring ordinary dividends from special dividends or capital returns.
  • Commodity and execution risk: compare sensitivity to commodity and currency movements, commissioning, qualification, operating costs and project funding.
  • Operational and external exposure: consider supply chains, safety, regulation, technology, climate and geographic footprint.

This framework organises disclosed risks; it is not a ranking of companies or an investment recommendation.

What should you monitor in future reporting?

Use the next results and company disclosures to test whether the main risks are improving or worsening. Focus on observed outcomes rather than relying on plans or a single reporting-period ratio.

  • Consumer demand, trading and margins in major retail divisions, alongside labour, energy and supply costs.
  • Operating cash flow, working capital, inventories, net debt, debt to EBITDA and borrowing costs.
  • Capital expenditure compared with cash generation and the operating results of completed investments.
  • Mt Holland refinery operating rates, mitigation progress, product qualification, sales and updated project assumptions.
  • Changes in segment reporting following the Industrial and Safety business transition, and the costs and results of business transformations.
  • Company updates on supply-chain, geopolitical, climate, regulatory, safety, conduct and technology exposures.
