Before buying a crypto asset or handing money to an intermediary, establish what you would own, what could make you lose access or value, and who controls the assets and keys. Then verify the people, rights, custody arrangements, and claims involved—and decide whether you could tolerate losing the full amount. No checklist can make a crypto investment risk-free or predict its return.
How do I assess the risks before investing in crypto?
Start with the specific asset and transaction, not with the label “crypto.” Crypto assets can have different designs, functions, rights, and risks. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investor-education materials cited here discuss crypto asset securities and related intermediaries; they are not jurisdiction-neutral legal, tax, or regulatory advice. Rules can depend on your country, residency, the asset, the transaction, and the intermediary.
- Identify exactly what you would acquire. Record the asset name and identifier, network, issuer or promoter, how it is issued, what it is intended to do, and where it can be traded or transferred. Read the offering materials and the rights they describe.
- Work out what those rights mean. Determine whether the token represents ownership, a claim against an issuer, contractual exposure, access to a service, or only a tradable asset. A label does not establish an asset’s legal status or economic rights.
- Map plausible loss scenarios. Consider a sharp price fall, disappearing liquidity, trading or withdrawals stopping, project or platform failure, a misdirected transaction, and problems with the underlying network or software.
- Check the people and the pitch. Identify the issuer, executives, promoters, seller, platform, and anyone who may control funds or keys. Verify claimed registration or licensing with the relevant official source in your jurisdiction.
- Evaluate custody and assurance claims. Find out who controls the keys, how assets are handled, and what any reports actually establish.
- Decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable. If you cannot explain how the investment works or verify essential terms, do not treat that uncertainty as a minor detail.
The SEC advises investors to understand a product and its risks before investing, and to consider their investment plan, risk tolerance, and time horizon. Its guidance says speculative investments should be limited to money an investor can afford to lose entirely. That is a risk-planning principle, not a recommendation to buy a particular asset or invest a particular share of your finances.

Read the instrument’s terms to learn who owes you what, if anyone. A token may refer to another asset’s price without giving you ownership of, or a claim against, the issuer of that referenced asset.

Issuer-sponsored tokenized securities
Investor.gov explains that an issuer-sponsored tokenized security may carry rights such as voting, dividends, or ownership. Check the documents to confirm which rights apply and who is responsible for honoring them.
Synthetic tokenized securities
A synthetic tokenized security may provide exposure to a referenced security’s price without giving its holder a claim against that security’s issuer. The difference affects both what you hold and whom you could pursue if something goes wrong. The SEC’s Investor.gov explanation of tokenized securities makes this distinction; a token’s name alone does not resolve it.
What could make me lose money or access?
The SEC identifies several risk categories involving crypto asset securities and related intermediaries. They are possibilities to assess, not predictions that a particular event will occur.
Recommended Free Tools
- Market and liquidity risk: The price can be highly volatile; a market may become illiquid or disappear, leaving you unable to sell when or at the price you want.
- Platform and counterparty risk: A platform may fail, become insolvent, interrupt withdrawals, or otherwise be unable to return assets as expected.
- Technology and cyber risk: Cyber incidents or technical problems involving a platform, wallet, or network can affect transactions or access.
- Fraud and protection risk: Fraud can cause losses, and investor protections may be limited or may not apply as you expect.
- Rules may change or differ: Applicable rules depend on the asset, offer, transaction, intermediary, and jurisdiction.
Make the personal stakes concrete: when might you need the money, how significant would its loss be to your overall finances, and could you tolerate losing all of it? A general checklist cannot determine a suitable investment for your circumstances.

How can I check the people, claims, and incentives?
Look beyond testimonials, influencer posts, and promotional summaries. Read the offer terms and disclosures, identify who is being paid and for what, and check whether conflicts are disclosed or the pitch depends on recruiting other people. Verify registration or licensing claims through the official regulator or other relevant authority for your jurisdiction.
The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy’s investor alert of September 1, 2021, identifies guaranteed high returns with little or no risk, rapid account-value growth, unregistered sellers, and testimonials that may be paid or fabricated as warning signs. The alert states: “Promises of high investment returns with little or no risk are a classic warning sign of fraud.” A claimed return is not proof that an investment is legitimate, and an impressive account display does not establish that funds can be withdrawn.
Is a crypto wallet or exchange safe?
A wallet manages the keys used to authorize access or transactions; it does not hold crypto in the same way a physical wallet holds cash. A private key can authorize transactions, while a public key can be shared to receive assets. Losing a private key can permanently remove access. Assess custody separately from the asset’s investment merits: a wallet or exchange cannot prevent the asset from losing value.

Self-custody: you control the keys
With self-custody, you are responsible for securing and recovering the keys. A seed phrase can restore a wallet, so store it securely and never share it. A hot wallet is connected to the internet and offers convenience, but has cyber exposure. A cold wallet is typically a physical device or offline record and is generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but it can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. Neither approach eliminates investment risk.
Third-party custody: another party controls or safeguards the keys
Before using a custodian or exchange, ask:
- Who controls the keys, and does the custodian use subcontractors?
- What happens to customer assets if the custodian becomes insolvent?
- Can withdrawals or transfers be paused, and what restrictions apply?
- Does the custodian lend or commingle customer assets?
- Are assets insured? If so, what assets, events, exclusions, and limits does the coverage actually address?
- What do withdrawals and transfers cost, and what customer information is shared?
The SEC recommends researching a custodian’s background, practices, use of assets, privacy protections, and fees. Do not assume an account balance is a guarantee of recovery or that insurance, if offered, covers every loss.
Custody options at a glance
| Approach | Who controls the keys? | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Hot wallet | You, if it is self-custody; otherwise the provider, according to its arrangement | Internet connection offers convenience but creates cyber exposure. Establish who actually controls the keys. |
| Cold wallet | You, if it is self-custody | Typically less exposed to cyberthreats, but the device or offline record can be lost, damaged, or stolen. |
| Third-party custodian or exchange account | The custodian may control or safeguard the keys; confirm the specific arrangement | Review insolvency treatment, withdrawal restrictions, asset use, subcontractors, fees, privacy, and any insurance terms. |
What does a proof-of-reserves report establish?
A proof-of-reserves report is not automatically an independent financial statement audit. The SEC cautions that proof-of-reserves, valuation, and calculation reports are not equivalent to financial statement audits. A proof-of-reserves report may omit a complete set of financial statements and fail to disclose an entity’s full liabilities. A report showing assets alone therefore cannot establish that all customer claims are covered.

What should I compare between crypto investments?
Compare the specific terms and risks, rather than treating similar names or marketing categories as equivalent.
| What to compare | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Rights and claims | What do you own or have a claim to, and against whom? For tokenized exposure, is it direct rights or synthetic price exposure? |
| Function and dependencies | What is the asset meant to do, and which issuer, project, platform, or network does it depend on? |
| Trading and liquidity | Where can it be traded or transferred, and what could prevent a sale or transfer? |
| Custody and key control | Who controls the keys, and what happens if a wallet provider or custodian fails? |
| Withdrawals and transfers | What restrictions, interruptions, or fees apply? |
| Asset use and solvency | Can an intermediary lend or commingle assets, and what happens if it cannot meet its obligations? |
| Financial information | What information is available, and what do any independent reports cover or leave out? |
| Personal fit | Does the time horizon and potential loss fit your financial situation and tolerance for risk? |
When should I pause rather than proceed?
Pause if you cannot identify the issuer or counterparty, understand the rights or withdrawal terms, verify material claims, or explain how the investment works. The SEC advises against investing in a product you do not understand, including its risks. Unanswered questions belong in your assessment; confidence in a promoter or a checklist cannot replace verifiable terms.
The SEC alerts and bulletins cited in this article are U.S. investor-education materials and state that they reflect staff views rather than having the force of law. For your situation, check current primary sources in the relevant jurisdiction and seek qualified legal, tax, or financial advice where appropriate.
