To tell whether an IT services company depends more on consulting or outsourcing demand, start with how the company defines its services, then compare its revenue mix, contract obligations, and forward indicators such as bookings and backlog. Consulting usually means finite projects with defined outcomes; outsourcing and managed services usually mean ongoing responsibility for running or managing client operations. Company labels are not perfectly comparable, and a single contract can include both kinds of work.

What separates consulting demand from outsourcing demand?

The clearest distinction is the work pattern, not the service’s name. Accenture’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes consulting as finite projects with defined outcomes and typically specific deliverables. It describes managed services as ongoing, repeatable capabilities used to transition, run, or manage client systems or business functions. Accenture’s FY2025 Form 10-K

In practical terms, consulting demand tends to show up in project starts, transformation work, and client spending on defined initiatives. Outsourcing demand tends to show up in continuing operational responsibilities, such as running applications, infrastructure, or business processes. The boundary can blur: a transformation engagement may include a project phase followed by ongoing operations, and a company may deliver services partly through cloud or as-a-Service models.

How should you assess the company’s service mix?

1. Start with the company’s own definitions

Read the latest annual report, segment note, and investor presentation. Note how the company classifies consulting, systems integration, application operations, cloud services, infrastructure support, business-process outsourcing, and managed security. Look for descriptions of project deliverables, operational handover, recurring support, and responsibility for running client systems. Avoid classifying a service from its marketing name alone.

IBM’s FY2024 annual report illustrates why this matters: its services include consulting, technology consulting, application operations, cloud services, business-process outsourcing, security, and infrastructure support. The company says many offerings can be delivered wholly or partly through cloud or as-a-Service models, so a service label alone may not tell you whether the work is project-based or ongoing. 2. Track revenue share and growth over several years

For each year available, record consulting revenue, managed-services or outsourcing revenue, total services revenue, each category’s share of the total, and its reported growth. Keep reported-currency growth separate from constant-currency or local-currency growth where the company provides both. Check whether the company changed category definitions or restated prior periods.

A persistently larger managed-services base can suggest greater exposure to ongoing operational work. Faster consulting growth can suggest stronger exposure to project starts and discretionary transformation spending. Neither measure alone establishes what caused growth: Accenture says its customized service contracts do not allow it to use standard unit or rate measures to attribute revenue growth to price versus volume.

Accenture fiscal year Consulting revenue Managed Services revenue Total revenue
2025 $35.107 billion $34.566 billion $69.673 billion
2024 $33.195 billion $31.701 billion $64.896 billion

Accenture reported fiscal 2025 consulting growth of 6% in U.S. dollars and 5% in local currency; Managed Services growth was 9% in U.S. dollars and 9% in local currency. These are Accenture’s issuer-reported results, not an industry-wide benchmark. Accenture FY2025 Form 10-K

What do contract terms and revenue recognition reveal?

Contract mechanics help explain revenue timing and continuity, but they do not independently identify the work as consulting or outsourcing. Look for contract length, transition periods, renewal and termination terms, service-level obligations, and client concentration. Also read the revenue-recognition note to understand when work becomes revenue.

IBM says its services contracts may be time-and-materials, fixed-price, or fixed-price per output measure, and generally run from less than one year to five years. A long contract may support revenue visibility, but duration alone does not prove that it is outsourcing: the contract could include defined project work or a mix of project and ongoing obligations. IBM FY2024 annual report

A historical SEC-filed IT services disclosure describes common mechanics such as recognizing time-and-materials work as performed, unit-priced work against objective transaction measures, and fixed-price work over time unless the delivery pattern differs. Treat that filing as an illustration of possible contract accounting, not as a current industry rule. Historical SEC-filed IT services disclosure

How can bookings and backlog help—and where can they mislead?

When disclosed, track new bookings or signings, backlog, book-to-bill, renewals, contract wins, cancellations, and remaining performance obligations. Compare each metric over time within the same company and check its scope, measurement period, currency treatment, acquisition adjustments, and whether it is a management estimate.

IBM defines signings as management’s initial estimate of a client’s commitment and backlog as the estimated remaining value of work expected to be recognized, after recognized revenue and adjustments. Its book-to-bill ratio compares consulting signings with consulting revenue over the same period. A rising consulting book-to-bill may be a directional indication of project demand; growing multi-year managed-services backlog may indicate operational demand and potential revenue visibility. Neither guarantees future revenue, and definitions can differ across issuers. IBM FY2024 annual report

How should you compare companies and use market data?

First compare each company with itself over time. For peers, align fiscal periods and currencies, account for acquisitions and divestitures, check whether categories were restated, and determine whether managed services includes cloud operations or business-process outsourcing. Accenture notes that contract mixes are customized and that its consulting and managed-services mix varies by geography, so even clear issuer categories require context.

Industry market totals are context, not a replacement for company disclosures. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology reported estimated annual MSP-related revenue of £52.6 billion, direct gross value added of £29.1 billion, 294,340 workers, and 11,492 active UK MSPs in a report published on 12 February 2024. The estimates were experimental and indicative, relied on a market taxonomy and modelling, and primarily reflected activity delivered and billed in 2022. The department also notes there is no dedicated SIC code or unified definition for MSPs. Its figures therefore should not be treated as all outsourcing demand or as directly comparable with an individual company’s reported revenue. UK DSIT managed service provider market study

A practical checklist for an investor or analyst

  • Use the latest company filings and record the company’s definitions before assigning service categories.
  • Compare category revenue, share, and growth across multiple years; note currency basis and any reporting changes.
  • Read contract-term and revenue-recognition disclosures to assess duration, obligations, and timing.
  • Use bookings, backlog, and renewal data only after checking each issuer’s definition and adjustments.
  • Keep company-specific analysis separate from broad market estimates, which may use different definitions and methods.
