A used car’s real value is not a number you can read from its age, mileage, or clean exterior alone. Build a local, like-for-like price range, then check the specific car’s records, title, mechanical condition, and sale terms before deciding what it is worth to you. The method below is U.S.-focused; the right valuation depends on the exact vehicle, its location, and whether you are buying from a dealer or a private seller.

Start with the right kind of price comparison

First identify what the number represents. A dealer’s asking price, a private-party estimate, a trade-in value, and an estimate of a likely purchase price refer to different transactions. Comparing one with another can make a fair offer look too high or a poor deal look reasonable.

Enter the car’s exact year, make, model, trim, options, mileage, transaction type, and location into a pricing guide. Then compare that estimate with current local listings for vehicles with similar specifications and condition. Used-car markets change, so an older national average or a listing from a different area may not be a useful benchmark.

Kelley Blue Book describes its Fair Purchase Price as an estimate based on actual used-car transactions and adjusted regularly for market conditions; its mileage adjustments draw on transaction records, and its geographic pricing is regional. KBB says its Fair Market Range estimates what a buyer might reasonably expect to pay that week for a vehicle with typical mileage and options, or the mileage and options entered, excluding dealer taxes, title, and fees. These are KBB’s estimates, not a guaranteed sale price. Kelley Blue Book Used Car FAQ

The final price can differ based on condition, popularity, warranty, and the local market. Kelley Blue Book Used Car FAQ

Compare the cars on the details that change value

When two cars look similar, compare the factors that can make their prices meaningfully different. A low-mileage vehicle with a branded title, for example, is not directly comparable to a higher-mileage car with a clean title and documented maintenance.

Check whether the records support the car’s story

Ask to see service and inspection records, and compare their recorded mileage with the odometer. NHTSA recommends this cross-check because inconsistent readings can be a warning sign when assessing possible odometer fraud. Vehicle condition and detailed history can provide additional clues. Get a vehicle-history report and check whether recalls remain open. The report may reveal useful title, ownership, mileage, accident, or repair information, but its contents vary and it may not capture every event. The FTC recommends using a history report alongside—not instead of—an independent inspection. The FTC also points buyers to NMVTIS-approved providers for title, insurance-loss, and salvage information; other commercial reports may include accident and repair records. FTC: Used Cars

Use an independent inspection to price mechanical condition

Have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle and provide a written report with estimates for necessary repairs. Ask that the report identify the car’s make, model, and VIN. The FTC recommends an independent inspection even when a used car is certified or covered by a warranty. A mechanic’s findings can support a lower offer or a request for the seller to complete repairs. FTC: Buying a Used Car From a Dealer Consumer.gov: Buying a Car

Use the actual repair estimates when judging a price rather than subtracting an arbitrary amount for age or wear. If you use an OBD-II reader, treat any codes it finds as one clue, not a clean bill of health or a substitute for a comprehensive inspection.

Read the title, warranty, and sale terms

Check the title for salvage or other branding and make sure the seller’s description matches the paperwork. A history report can help surface title information, but confirm important details through the documents and the relevant state process.

For a dealer sale, read the Buyers Guide displayed on the vehicle. It states whether the car is being sold “as is” or with a warranty and provides information about major systems. If a seller makes a promise about repairs or coverage, get it in writing. Compare a warranty-backed car with another vehicle only after checking what the warranty actually covers and for how long; the word “warranty” alone does not establish equivalent protection. FTC: Dealer’s Guide to the Used Car Rule

Turn the evidence into an offer range

Use the local comparisons to set a reasonable range rather than treating any guide’s figure as a precise value. Start with cars that match the vehicle’s specifications and transaction type, then account for evidence that changes this particular car’s appeal or cost to own.

  1. Set a local baseline: use a pricing guide and current comparable listings for the same configuration, mileage, location, and sale type.
  2. Adjust for documented differences: weigh verified repair needs, condition, service history, title or accident information, and relevant warranty coverage.
  3. Make the case: show the seller the inspection report and repair estimates behind any lower offer or request for repairs.
  4. Judge the full commitment: ask for the total price and account for tax, title, registration, insurance, fuel, and expected maintenance when deciding whether the car fits your budget. These ownership costs affect affordability, but they are not all part of the car’s market value.

Before committing, test-drive the car in representative conditions, verify recall status, and make sure the written sale terms match what you agreed. Consumer.gov recommends asking for the total price and notes that an inspection-based repair estimate may support a lower price or seller-paid repairs. Consumer.gov: Buying a Car

What a valuation can—and cannot—tell you

A guide estimates value from its data and assumptions; it does not certify the individual vehicle or guarantee the price a buyer and seller will agree on. A history report can be incomplete, and a clean appearance cannot establish that a car is mechanically sound. The strongest assessment combines a well-matched local baseline with verifiable records, an independent inspection, and clear written terms.
