To query Brazilian economic data with AI, connect an MCP-compatible AI client to an MCP server that can retrieve data from the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB). Choose the source by the question: use SGS for historical time series, Focus for market expectations, and PTAX for exchange-rate quotations. The BCB operates the official data services; bcb-br-mcp is a third-party project that provides an MCP integration, not an official BCB product.
Choose the BCB data source that matches your question
Selic, IPCA, exchange rates and Focus expectations are not all the same kind of data. Before asking an AI assistant, decide whether you want an observed historical value, a market expectation or a currency quotation.
| Source | What it provides | How to frame the date | Interpretation check |
|---|---|---|---|
| SGS | Historical time series published by the BCB, including indicator series such as IPCA and the Selic target. | Specify the period and, where relevant, the frequency. | Choose the exact series: an indicator name alone may not identify its definition or periodicity. |
| Focus | Market expectations, including expectations for Selic by Copom meeting in the cited MCP project. | Specify the expectation horizon or the Copom meeting reference. | An expectation is a survey result, not an observed outcome or a BCB-guaranteed forecast. |
| PTAX | Exchange-rate quotations. | Specify the currency and date. | Check the quote side and bulletin context; a reference quotation is not necessarily the price of a particular transaction. |
The BCB’s statistics area lists indicator and SGS time-series resources. Its SGS web services provide programmatic access to historical series. For exchange rates, the BCB also publishes daily exchange-rate bulletins and daily U.S. dollar bid and offer rate data.

- Ask in an MCP-compatible AI client. State the indicator or currency, requested dates, and whether you want a historical observation, an expectation or a quotation.
- The client selects a tool exposed by its MCP server. The bcb-br-mcp project documentation describes tools and resources for SGS series, Focus expectations and PTAX quotations.
- The tool requests data from the relevant BCB interface. It returns structured results to the AI client, which can then explain or summarize them.
- Check the returned data before relying on the explanation. Verify source, series definition, units, dates and frequency or horizon. The assistant’s prose does not replace those details.
The MCP server is the connection layer between a compatible AI client and data tools. The BCB provides the underlying data services; the capabilities, configuration and deployment options of bcb-br-mcp are maintained by its project, and may change. The project documentation describes local development and an HTTP worker deployment option. Follow the current instructions for your specific client rather than assuming every AI application has the same MCP setup.

Ask for historical Selic or IPCA data with SGS
For a question such as “What was the monthly IPCA in 2024?” or “Show the Selic target series over this period,” use SGS when you want recorded historical series. The BCB’s statistics index lists IPCA and the Selic target among its indicators, but you still need the right series and date range.
- Name the indicator and the intended measure. For example, distinguish the Selic target from another Selic-related series, or specify that you want monthly IPCA observations.
- Give a start and end date. For a calendar-year request, say “from January through December 2024” rather than simply “in 2024.”
- Ask the tool or assistant to identify the series used. Check its definition and periodicity against the BCB’s statistics index and SGS service information.
- Inspect the returned values and units. Confirm that the output covers the requested dates and that the assistant has not mixed frequency or series definitions.
Example prompt: Retrieve the BCB SGS monthly IPCA series from January 2024 through December 2024. Identify the series definition, dates, units, and source, then present one observation per month. This is a request pattern, not a claim that a particular result has been retrieved here.

Query Focus when you want expectations
Use Focus for market expectations rather than a history of observed outcomes. The bcb-br-mcp project documents Focus tools for expectations and Selic expectations by Copom meeting. An expectation must be read with its horizon or meeting reference; it should not be described as the rate that actually occurred.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteExample prompt: Retrieve the Focus market expectation for Selic associated with the next specified Copom meeting. State the reference date and horizon, identify the source, and label the result as an expectation. If your question concerns a different indicator or horizon, name it explicitly and confirm that the selected tool returns that measure.
The available project documentation supports this distinction between Focus expectations and SGS historical series. For detailed methodology or current expectation figures, consult current official BCB Focus material and verify the returned reference date; do not treat an AI summary as an official forecast.
Query PTAX or daily exchange-rate data
Use PTAX when you want an exchange-rate quotation. The MCP project describes a PTAX quotation tool, while the BCB open-data catalog lists daily exchange-rate bulletins and daily U.S. dollar bid and offer rates. State the currency, date and quote side you need, and check which bulletin or endpoint supplied the result.

Example prompt: Retrieve the BCB PTAX quotation for USD/BRL on [date]. Specify whether the result is the bid or offer rate, identify the bulletin or source, and return the date and units. Replace the date variable with the date you need. A quotation is a reference value; it does not establish the execution price of an individual exchange transaction.
The BCB catalog says its daily bulletin coverage begins on 2 January 2002 for euro data and 28 November 1984 for other currencies. Its dollar-series description distinguishes administered rates through March 1990 from free rates afterward. These coverage notes do not establish that a quotation is published for every calendar day, so check the returned date rather than assuming weekends or holidays have values.

- Source: Is the result from SGS, Focus or PTAX, and is that the right data type for your question?
- Definition: For SGS, does the series definition and frequency match the intended indicator?
- Date meaning: Is the date an observation date, an expectation reference or a quotation date?
- Coverage: Does the result contain the full interval requested? Do not infer values for dates the source did not return.
- Units and quote side: Are units clear, and for a currency quote, is it the bid or offer side you requested?
- Attribution: Can you trace the result to a BCB service or catalog entry, rather than relying only on the AI’s description?
The BCB’s official starting points are its statistics area, SGS web services and open-data exchange-rate catalog. For the MCP layer, consult the current bcb-br-mcp repository documentation.
