To match your display layout to the screens on your desk, open your system’s display settings, identify each screen, and arrange the on-screen display tiles to match their physical positions. This affects where the pointer moves between screens; it does not arrange or tile app windows. To use separate desktops, choose an extended display mode rather than mirroring.
How do I rearrange my monitors in Windows?
- Connect the displays and check that the cables are seated correctly.
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify. Match the number shown on each physical screen to its tile in Settings; the numbers identify screens, not which one should be the main display.
- Drag the numbered tiles so their left-right and relative-height positions match the screens on your desk. Microsoft Support’s instruction is: “In Display settings, select and drag the display to where you want.”
- Select Apply, then move the pointer across the screen edges to check that it crosses to the expected display.
If a connected screen is missing, go to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect. Check the cable connections if Windows still does not find it. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. How do I extend my display instead of mirroring it?
Display arrangement and display mode are separate settings: arranging tiles controls where screens sit in the virtual desktop, while the mode controls whether they show the same content or separate parts of a desktop.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Select a display and use the Use as menu to choose whether it mirrors, extends the desktop, or acts as the main display. Apple’s Arrange control positions displays, manages mirroring, and relocates the menu bar; it appears when an external display is connected. How do I set my main monitor?
On a Mac
In Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the display and choose the main-display option in Use as. Apple says these options require an external display on Mac laptops and iMacs; Mac mini and Mac Studio need more than one connected display. Available choices vary by Mac and display.

In Windows
Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guidance confirms how to identify and arrange displays and choose display modes, but does not document the current control for designating a display as the main one. Community-level Microsoft Q&A guidance names a Make this my main display checkbox under Multiple displays, but that exact label is not confirmed by the official Microsoft how-to cited above. If you see the checkbox in your Windows build, select it for the display you want to use as main; verify the available control in your own Display settings rather than relying on the label being identical across builds.
What if the displays will not connect or an option is missing?
Display support depends on the computer and the connection, not just the monitor. For a Mac, Apple says the number of supported displays depends on the specific Mac model and each display’s resolution and refresh rate. Check your Mac’s specifications before planning a multi-display setup. If a display cable requires a port your Mac does not have, Apple says you can use a video adapter or replace the cable with one that fits; the appropriate choice depends on your Mac’s ports and the display’s inputs. For a Mac setup with more than two displays that needs some screens mirrored and others extended, Apple’s procedure is to start with displays extended, then hold Option and drag one display icon onto another to mirror those two. Not every display option is available for every Mac or display.
