For many leave-in scalp serums, the wash-day order is shampoo, rinse-out conditioner, then serum applied directly to the scalp. But damp-versus-dry use, how often to apply it, and where it fits with hair oil vary by product. Follow the directions for your specific serum rather than treating one routine as universal.
Where scalp serum fits on wash day
Wash and rinse your hair first, apply and rinse out conditioner as directed, then apply the scalp serum. If its label calls for damp hair, towel-dry before applying. Use a comb or your fingers to make several parts so the serum reaches the scalp instead of collecting mostly on the hair lengths.
Apply the amount and massage only as directed. If the product is labeled leave-in, leave it in; do not rinse unless its instructions say to. For example, Kérastase directs users to apply Genesis Serum Fortifiant to a towel-dried scalp after shampooing and conditioning, massage it in, and not rinse. Pantene places its Abundant & Strong Daily Scalp & Root Serum after shampoo and rinsed conditioner in its three-step system, but permits application on wet or dry hair. Often, but only when the product directions allow it. Some serums permit dry-scalp use between washes; others specify a daily or bedtime routine without clearly stating that every formula should be used on dry hair.

- Kérastase says Genesis Serum Fortifiant may be applied to a dry scalp between washes.
- Pantene says its Daily Scalp & Root Serum can be used on wet or dry hair, sectioning the hair, applying along the scalp line, massaging, and not rinsing.
- The Ordinary says its Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density is leave-in and advises not washing the hair or scalp after application.

How to use serum between wash days or overnight
Use a serum between washes only if its directions permit application to a dry scalp or describe non-wash-day use. Overnight use is not a universal instruction: indē wild says to apply Moonlight Growth Scalp Serum to the parted scalp, massage, leave overnight, and wash the next day as needed. Aveda says to apply Scalp Solutions Overnight Scalp Renewal Serum directly to the scalp at bedtime and massage. indē wild product directions and Aveda product directions.

How scalp serum fits with oil and other leave-ins
Keep scalp treatments distinct from products intended for hair lengths and ends. Aveda, for example, distinguishes its scalp serum from a separate overnight serum for lengths and ends. Apply each product to the area its directions specify.

What to check on your serum label
- Whether to apply on damp, wet, or dry hair or scalp.
- How much to use, how often to apply, and whether to massage.
- Whether it is leave-in or must be rinsed out, and whether overnight or between-wash use is specified.
- Whether it belongs on the scalp, the hair lengths, or both—and how the brand says to layer it with oil or other leave-ins.
These directions describe how manufacturers say to use individual products; they do not establish that the serums have equivalent ingredients or effects. Kérastase describes Genesis as addressing breakage, not genetic hair loss, so it should not be treated as a medical hair-loss treatment. Kérastase product information.
