There is no single application form for research internships and fellowships across Indian research institutes. Find calls that fit your subject and degree stage, verify the current year’s eligibility and deadline, prepare the materials that specific programme requests, and apply through its official portal. The Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship Program 2027 lists an online deadline of 30 November 2026; several cited 2026 institute calls are already closed.
How to find a suitable programme
Start with three filters: your subject, your current degree and year, and the period you can attend. Search official institute pages and coordinated fellowship programmes, then compare opportunities that match those constraints. The Science Academies programme is one national route for students and teachers studying or teaching in India; its three Academies publish programme instructions and eligibility details. See the Science Academies’ 2027 programme instructions and the programme information page.
For every potential opportunity, record its call year, application status, deadline, eligible study stages, research areas, duration, selection process, and funding and living arrangements. Do not assume a programme returns on the same dates or terms each year.

How to check eligibility
Read the current call’s eligibility section, not a general summary or an older call. Check degree type and year, subject restrictions, institution requirements, academic standing, and any certification or reference conditions. For example, the Science Academies’ 2027 instructions list eligible study stages across several degree types. IISc’s 2026 Inorganic and Physical Chemistry fellowship specified particular undergraduate and first-year postgraduate cohorts, while IIT Hyderabad’s 2026 SURE call limited eligibility to specified non-IITH cohorts and required certification that applicants ranked in the top 20% of their discipline. These are programme-specific examples, not general rules for Indian research institutes.

What to prepare before applying
Build a reusable folder of accurate application materials, then tailor it to each call. Depending on the programme, you may need academic records, a CV, research-interest text, details of past projects, faculty preferences, or a teacher’s contact. There is no universal personal-statement format established by these programmes.
- Academic records: The Science Academies’ 2027 instructions require mark sheets from Class X through the latest examination. IISc’s cited Chemistry page says transcripts are not required at the initial application stage.
- CV and academic details: IISER Kolkata’s application form asks for a CV and academic information.
- Research interests and project history: IISc’s Chemistry application asks for a research-interest description and information about the applicant’s last summer or winter project.
- Reference or contact details: The Science Academies’ 2026 programme page asks student applicants for the email address of a teacher familiar with their work. Check the current call to confirm whether and how this applies.
- Faculty preferences: IISER Kolkata’s portal asks applicants to name up to two preferred faculty members.
Use specific research areas that genuinely match the programme and its faculty options. Describe only work and skills you can substantiate. Before opening the form, note required uploads, file formats and size limits, text fields, references, and any restriction on the number of submissions.

How to apply: a practical sequence
- Open the official page for the correct call year. Confirm that the opportunity is accepting applications; an old page or visible form does not prove that the current call is open.
- Match your profile to every eligibility condition. Check your study stage, subject, academic requirements, institution status, and any required certification or contact.
- Make a call-specific checklist. List each upload, form response, reference, deadline, and submission limit. The Science Academies’ 2027 instructions say only one application per candidate will be considered.
- Complete the official online form carefully. Tailor your interests and preferences to the programme rather than sending identical, generic answers everywhere.
- Submit before the stated deadline and retain a record. Save the confirmation or a copy of your application if the portal provides one. IISc’s cited Chemistry page advises applicants to submit once and says the form displays a saved-data message rather than sending an automatic acknowledgement. The Science Academies’ instructions say not to send hard copies; that direction is specific to that programme.
- Monitor the contact channel named in the call. Prepare for any stated interview or document checks and watch for selection updates.
Deadlines and current status: examples, not a complete directory
Programme windows vary, and a summer placement may require an application months earlier. The following official examples illustrate why you should check the call year and portal status before preparing a submission.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Programme and call | Deadline or status | What the call specifies |
|---|---|---|
| Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship Program 2027 | 30 November 2026, online application deadline, according to the 2027 instructions. | Mark sheets from Class X through the latest examination; one application per candidate. Official 2027 instructions. |
| IISc Inorganic and Physical Chemistry Summer Research Fellowship 2026 | Deadline was 31 March 2026; the page says the call is closed. | For selected fellows, the page describes a two-month placement, ₹8,000 per month for two months, and round-trip second-class train or ordinary bus fare. Accommodation is the candidate’s responsibility, and medical insurance must be valid in Bengaluru during the project. These terms apply to this specific call. Official programme page. |
| IIT Delhi Summer Research Fellowship Programme 2026 | Application period was 16 March to 3 April 2026, closing at 17:00; the portal is closed. | See the official closure page for that call’s dates and status. |
| IIT Hyderabad SURE 2026 | Deadline was extended to 14 March 2026; the dates are specific to that call. | The call specified non-IITH eligibility cohorts, top-20% certification, preliminary screening, and possible online interviews. It listed 250 interns, including 100 places exclusive for girls, and a total fellowship of ₹15,000 for the two-month internship. Those figures and terms are not typical amounts or places for other programmes. Official SURE 2026 announcement. |
| IISER Kolkata Summer Research Programme | The portal reports that online applications are closed. | The displayed form asks for a CV, academic details, fellowship type, internship mode, and up to two faculty preferences. Check the portal for a new call rather than treating the displayed form as evidence applications are open. Official application portal. |
Compare the practical terms before accepting
Once you identify eligible opportunities, compare the details that affect whether you can participate—not just the institute name. Funding may cover some expenses but not others, and selection procedures differ.
- Research fit: Does the call cover your subject and the areas you want to explore? Are suitable supervisors or faculty listed?
- Time commitment: Check placement dates and duration against your academic calendar and availability.
- Selection: Look for screening, interviews, academic ranking conditions, and document checks.
- Support and costs: Confirm stipend, travel support, accommodation arrangements, insurance requirements, and any other stated expenses separately.
- Application status: Verify that the specific year’s portal is open and that you can meet its deadline.
The 2026 Science Academies programme description characterizes its fellowships as two-month placements with scientists associated with the Academies and asks student applicants for a teacher’s email address. It provides useful context but is not a source for a later year’s deadline or terms. Read the 2026 programme description.

Do not submit through an old form or assume last year’s rules still apply. Check the programme’s official page for a new call and use the waiting period to prepare your CV, current marksheets, project details, and a shortlist of genuine research interests. Recheck eligibility, dates, funding, and accommodation terms when the next year’s instructions are published; they cannot be inferred from a previous call.
