To apply for a business loan from a bank in India, define whether you need a term loan, working capital, or both; confirm your MSME/Udyam details; request the bank’s current document checklist; then submit and track the application with that lender. There is no single nationwide checklist or approval formula, and a complete application does not guarantee a loan.
1. Decide what the business needs to finance
Separate the borrowing need into its purpose before approaching a bank:
- Term loan: finance a defined asset, project, or other longer-term requirement.
- Working capital: meet day-to-day operating needs.
- Both: ask whether the bank offers a combined or composite facility. Indian Bank’s 2025–26 MSME policy describes a composite loan combining working-capital and term-loan needs for micro and small enterprises; this is an example of one bank’s policy, not a standard available from every lender. Be ready to explain how the requested amount will be used and how the business expects to repay it. Those are practical preparation points; banks set their appraisal requirements under their own policies.
2. Check MSME classification and Udyam details
“SME” is common in everyday usage, but Indian government and bank material generally uses MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) or MSE (micro and small enterprise). The label alone does not establish eligibility for a scheme or a loan. Check the enterprise’s current Udyam registration and classification before applying.

As an example of a dated bank policy, Indian Bank’s 2025–26 policy lists these investment and turnover ceilings: micro, ₹2.5 crore and ₹10 crore; small, ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium, ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. These figures describe the classification used in that policy. Verify current government rules and the enterprise’s Udyam record rather than relying on this example as a current universal threshold. Indian Bank’s policy says it obtains a Udyam Registration Certificate from existing and new MSME enterprises. The selected bank may have its own process and requirements, so ask what it needs for your enterprise and facility.
3. Choose a bank and get its document checklist
There is no single compulsory nationwide application file established for all banks and loan products. RBI guidance says banks should give MSME borrowers an indicative document checklist when they apply. The Ministry of Finance stated in a Press Information Bureau release on March 11, 2025: “Banks have been advised to furnish the MSME borrowers with an indicative checklist of documents required for processing the loan application at the time of applying for the loan.” Ministry of Finance / PIB release, March 11, 2025

Ask the bank for its latest checklist before assembling your application. Requirements can depend on the business’s legal form, requested amount, purpose, and facility type. As a preparation prompt—not a uniform official list—ask whether it needs:
- Identity and legal-constitution records for the business and relevant owners.
- Udyam registration details.
- Tax, financial, account-statement, or cash-flow information.
- Project plans, asset quotations, or other evidence of the proposed use of funds.
- Security-related documents, if the bank says security applies.
Follow the chosen lender’s checklist rather than treating this prompt as a complete or mandatory pack.
4. Submit the application and keep its tracking reference
Use the bank’s stated application route—online, at a branch, or both—and retain a copy of what you submit. Indian Bank provides an online MSME loan application link and application forms through its website; the exact route and forms depend on the bank you choose. Indian Bank

Decision timelines
RBI guidance says decisions on MSE loan applications up to ₹25 lakh should take no more than 14 working days; for larger applications, timelines follow the bank’s board-approved norms. The Ministry of Finance repeated the 14-working-day guidance for MSE loans up to ₹25 lakh in its March 11, 2025 release. Indian Bank’s 2025–26 policy specifies 14 working days for complete applications up to ₹25 lakh and six weeks above ₹25 lakh. These are decision timelines, not promises of approval or disbursement; completeness and the applicable lender policy matter. Ministry of Finance / PIB release, March 11, 2025 Indian Bank
Collateral
The Ministry’s March 2025 update says scheduled commercial banks are mandated not to accept collateral security for MSE loans up to ₹10 lakh. For other cases, ask the bank whether it requires collateral or whether guarantee coverage may be available. Do not assume a broader collateral exemption applies. CGTMSE guarantee route
CGTMSE facilitates institutional credit to micro and small enterprises. Its process is lender-led: approach a member lending institution (MLI) registered with CGTMSE; the lender assesses the application under its own credit process and may sanction or disburse the facility; after sanction or disbursement, the lender applies to CGTMSE for guarantee coverage. CGTMSE issues cover to the lender after approval and receipt of the applicable fee. The borrower does not apply to CGTMSE for an assured loan, and a guarantee does not compel a bank to approve one. Check the current MLI list and ask the bank whether the business and facility meet the scheme’s terms. CGTMSE
CGTMSE reported cumulative guarantees approved of ₹13.67 lakh crore and 322 member lending institutions registered under CGS-I and CGS-II as of March 31, 2026. These figures indicate scheme scale, not an individual applicant’s likelihood of approval. CGTMSE
6. Compare written offers before accepting
Credit-related matters are largely governed by regulated lenders’ board-approved policies, applicable statutory requirements, and the loan agreement. There is no universal minimum turnover, credit score, interest rate, margin, tenure, collateral rule, or approval formula established here. Ask each bank for its current terms and compare written offers on the same points:
- Facility purpose, including whether term and working capital can be combined.
- Sanctioned amount and any borrower contribution or margin.
- Interest basis and reset terms.
- Fees, including any applicable guarantee charges.
- Repayment schedule and tenure.
- Collateral, personal guarantees, and whether CGTMSE coverage is available.
- Conditions to complete and requirements before disbursement.
Request the written sanction and current schedule of charges. A bank’s decision is not guaranteed by MSME status or by a scheme that supports lending.
