For an Indian citizen applying in India for a Swiss short-stay visa, first confirm Switzerland is the main destination, choose the checklist that matches the trip, then submit the application through the authorized VFS Global route for the applicant’s place of residence. A Schengen short-stay visa covers tourism, visits, and other qualifying stays of up to 90 days; work, study, family reunification, and longer stays require a different category.

1. Confirm that Switzerland is the country to apply to

If your itinerary includes more than one Schengen country, apply through the country that is your main destination under Schengen rules. If Switzerland is the principal destination, use the Swiss application process. The Embassy of Switzerland in India routes Indian residents through VFS Global to the Embassy in New Delhi and assigns application jurisdiction based on residence. Check the Embassy’s visa procedure and jurisdiction information before booking. Bhutan is listed under Austrian representation for Swiss Schengen applications.

This guide covers short stays of up to 90 days. Select a separate visa category for work, study, family reunification, or a stay longer than 90 days; the short-stay tourist document list is not a substitute for those requirements.

2. Choose the checklist that matches your trip

The Swiss Embassy publishes separate document lists for tourism, personal visits, business, and other purposes. Use the checklist that reflects the actual reason for travel, and tailor the supporting documents to your circumstances. The tourist visa checklist reviewed for this guide carries an October 2024 revision marker. Confirm that it is still the current version before preparing your application; the Embassy can request extra documents or an interview.

3. Prepare the tourist application documents

For a tourist application, the checklist calls for a completed and signed visa application form, a compliant passport and photograph, evidence relating to employment or finances, travel reservations, accommodation evidence, and travel medical insurance. The checklist’s specific requirements include:

Passport, photo, and form

  • Passport: A national passport issued within the previous 10 years, valid for at least three months after the planned return, with at least two blank pages. The checklist excludes handwritten passports and passports with observations on the biographical-data page.
  • Photograph: One recent passport-size photo on a white background, 35–40 mm wide, taken within the previous six months. Follow the checklist’s photo instructions.
  • Application form: A completed, signed visa application form.

Employment and financial evidence

  • Employed applicants: The checklist asks for an original employer letter on company letterhead, signed and stamped, confirming the position, length of service, no objection to the trip, travel dates, and purpose. It also lists the last three months of payslips, matching salary-account statements, and Indian ITR-V or acknowledgements for the last two assessment years.
  • Self-employed applicants or company owners: Provide business registration, GST documentation, or other proof of ownership; personal bank statements for the last three months; and ITR-V or acknowledgements for the last two assessment years.
  • Retired applicants: Provide pension-account statements for three months and evidence of regular income from property or business, where applicable.

Itinerary, accommodation, and family applications

  • Include a flight reservation showing all travellers and, where applicable, evidence of transport between Schengen countries.
  • Provide hotel or package-tour confirmations covering Switzerland or other Schengen states on the itinerary.
  • For children, follow the checklist’s additional requirements, including notarized parental consent in specified travel situations. It also explains which documents the head of family may provide when applications and bookings are shared.

These are checklist requirements, not a guarantee that the listed papers alone will be sufficient for every case. Follow the current Embassy checklist and be prepared to supply further evidence or attend an interview if requested.

4. Arrange qualifying travel medical insurance

The tourist checklist requires insurance covering the full Schengen stay, with at least EUR 30,000 for expenses connected with medical repatriation, urgent medical attention, or emergency hospital treatment. The Embassy directs applicants to its approved Indian insurance list, effective January 2026, which sets company and policy age limits. Check that the specific policy and the applicant’s age qualify; an insurer’s name alone does not establish eligibility.

5. Submit the application and provide biometrics if required

Applicants in India submit through the authorized VFS Global channel serving their residence jurisdiction. Personal appearance is generally required when fingerprints have not already been recorded. The Embassy says fingerprints are collected every 59 months from applicants aged 12 and over. If fingerprints were taken within the preceding 59 months and the earlier visa is marked “VIS,” another fingerprint visit may not be needed, unless the prints are inadequate or the Embassy requests an interview. Children under 12 do not provide fingerprints.

6. Pay the fee and allow time for a decision

The Embassy’s India fee table, effective 1 April 2026, lists these visa fees. Fees are payable when the application is submitted and are not refunded if an application is withdrawn or refused; local-currency amounts may change with exchange rates. Check the current fee table and any VFS service charges before attending.

Applicant Visa fee listed for India, effective 1 April 2026
Adult EUR 90 / INR 9,600
Child aged 6–12 EUR 45 / INR 4,800

The Embassy procedure page, published 19 January 2026, gives an estimate of 7–10 calendar days after submission at a VFS application centre in India. It separately says a consular decision is generally taken within 15 days and may be extended in individual cases; some nationalities can trigger consultation lasting up to 14 calendar days. These are different process descriptions, not a guaranteed date for passport return. The Embassy recommends applying early and allows submission as early as six months before the planned trip.

7. If your application is refused

A refusal is accompanied by reasons on a standard form. You may appeal within 30 days of receiving the refusal; follow the State Secretariat for Migration’s appeal instructions for the detailed procedure.
