iOS widgets can animate when their displayed content changes, but they are not general-purpose players for continuous animation. WidgetKit asks your extension for timeline entries and renders the resulting SwiftUI views; the system may show an update later than its scheduled date. For motion tied to a changed value or view, use SwiftUI’s documented widget animations and transitions. Lottie, Rive, GIFs, and PNG sequences should not be assumed to bypass WidgetKit’s scheduling or lifecycle limits.

What kind of animation can an iOS widget play?

WidgetKit supports short animations that accompany data updates, such as a number changing, a status label being replaced, or a view appearing. It does not give a widget extension a continuously running frame loop. Apple describes widgets as SwiftUI views rendered by the system, while the extension itself is not continuously active. See Apple’s WidgetKit overview and Keeping a widget up to date.

The practical distinction is whether motion communicates a state change or is meant to play by itself. A brief transition can clarify that a value has changed. A looping animation that must advance frame by frame is a different requirement, and WidgetKit’s timeline is not a frame clock.

How WidgetKit timelines affect animation

A timeline contains dated entries and a reload policy. The system chooses when to render those entries and manage refreshes; a requested date is not a guarantee that the widget updates at that exact moment. Apple states, “WidgetKit may not update the widget’s view exactly at a timeline entry’s date. The update may occur at a later date.” Read Apple’s Timeline documentation.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

That scheduling behavior matters for design: the widget must remain informative if an animation is skipped, delayed, or not shown. Treat each entry as a meaningful state the system can render, not as one frame in a sequence. Apple explains the system’s refresh-budget approach in Developing a WidgetKit strategy.

How to animate a SwiftUI widget when its content changes

Represent meaningful states in your timeline entries, then apply SwiftUI animation modifiers to the parts of the view that change. Apple documents default animations, chosen animations, content transitions, and view transitions for widget data updates. The documented maximum is two seconds: “Animations in widgets and Live Activities have a maximum duration of two seconds.”

Animate a changing number

For a numeric value, use a content transition such as .contentTransition(.numericText()). You can pair it with .animation(_:value:) so the animation is associated with the value changing, rather than running independently of the widget’s state.

Transition a changed view

For content that is inserted or removed, use a view transition such as .transition(.push(from: .bottom)) on the content associated with the changed model. Apple notes that new or removed views fade by default; an explicit transition lets you choose a different supported effect.

Keep the final state useful without motion

Some people will see the widget after the update has already rendered, and others may not see an animation at all. The value, label, or status should therefore make sense as a static view. This also makes the design more robust to system scheduling and different display conditions.

Always-On displays and animation control

Animations do not run on Always-On displays. Apple recommends checking isLuminanceReduced when adapting the experience for reduced luminance. Widget-specific animation constraints also differ from ordinary app views: Apple says Transaction is unavailable to widgets and Live Activities, so you cannot cancel an animation by setting a transaction’s animation to nil. Use the documented modifiers and identity or view transitions appropriate to the changed content.

How SwiftUI compares with Lottie, Rive, GIFs, and PNG sequences

The key comparison is not simply which format can depict the most elaborate motion. It is whether the approach is documented for WidgetKit, whether it depends on continuous playback, and what the person sees when the system renders a static state.

Approach What is documented WidgetKit-specific boundary
SwiftUI with WidgetKit Apple documents timeline entries, system scheduling, and update animations and transitions. Best-supported choice here for motion accompanying a widget data change; not evidence of unrestricted persistent playback.
Lottie Lottie for iOS describes an iOS runtime for Bodymovin JSON animations, UIKit and SwiftUI components, and installation through Swift Package Manager, CocoaPods, or Carthage. The project documentation establishes an app runtime, not compatibility inside a WidgetKit extension.
Rive Rive’s iOS runtime supports UIKit, AppKit, and SwiftUI and is distributed through Swift Package Manager or CocoaPods. The repository does not establish WidgetKit extension compatibility.
GIF GIF is a format readers may consider for animation. The Apple documentation cited here does not establish GIF playback behavior in WidgetKit.
PNG sequence A sequence of still images is conceptually distinct from a SwiftUI transition tied to changed data. The Apple documentation cited here does not establish sequence playback support or timing in WidgetKit.
Other third-party SDKs No specific SDK behavior is established here beyond the named projects above. Do not assume an SDK can override WidgetKit’s process lifecycle or system scheduling.

For Lottie and Rive, support for SwiftUI in an iOS app is not by itself proof that an integration works in a WidgetKit extension. Their runtimes may be worth evaluating for an app’s own interface, but the cited project descriptions do not establish that they enable continuous widget playback. Likewise, the absence of documented GIF or PNG-sequence behavior here is not proof that every implementation is impossible; it means those formats should not be presented as verified WidgetKit animation solutions on this evidence.

Choose the approach by the motion you need

  • A value or status changes between timeline entries: use SwiftUI’s documented content or view transitions.
  • The motion must play continuously or on a precise frame schedule: WidgetKit’s timeline model is not a frame clock, so do not design around guaranteed periodic playback.
  • You already create animation assets in Lottie or Rive: their official iOS runtimes document app integrations, but WidgetKit-extension compatibility remains unestablished in the cited documentation.
  • You are considering a GIF or image sequence: verify support for the specific extension and OS behavior before committing; the cited Apple sources do not confirm playback.

For interactive widget controls, animation is separate from interaction handling. Apple documents widget interactivity through App Intents and an archived representation in Adding interactivity to widgets and Live Activities.
