You can analyze a photo from your phone with computer-based AI by making the image available as a file, then giving it to an image-capable model and asking a focused question. The model must support image input: a text-only chat model cannot inspect the photo. You can run a vision model on the computer itself or connect to a model running on another device; those are different processing and privacy setups.
Choose where the photo will be analyzed
There are two practical routes: run an image-capable model in desktop software, or use a model hosted on another device that your computer or phone can reach. The route affects where inference happens, how you provide the photo, and what setup is required.

If you want the model to work on the computer, choose the desktop route. If you need to reach a model on a different machine, a linked-device option may fit, but account for the network connection and where the model runs.
Analyze a phone photo with a desktop vision model
1. Make the image available to the computer
Save or export the phone photo to a folder the computer can access. Transfer steps depend on your phone and computer, so use the method that fits your devices. The model workflow begins once you have an image file ready.

2. Choose software and a model that accept images
Ollama’s macOS and Windows app supports downloading and chatting with models, including image input for compatible multimodal models. LM Studio’s image-input documentation shows how to provide a local image file to a VLM. Consult the current Ollama app guidance or LM Studio image-input documentation for supported models and features, which can change.
Supported file types vary. LM Studio’s cited documentation lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP. If your image is in another format, convert or export it to a supported type before trying to attach it.

3. Attach the photo and ask one focused question
In the app, attach or drag the image into the chat if supported, or provide its file path using the method the tool documents. Ollama documents drag-and-drop and file-path workflows; LM Studio’s SDK documentation describes preparing a local image file and supplying it to a VLM. Ollama; LM Studio
Ask for a specific observation rather than a broad conclusion. For example:

Ollama documents image question-answering examples that include OCR and charts, but those examples are not a guarantee that a model will read every label or interpret every image correctly. Ollama’s Llama 3.2 Vision documentation
4. Check the answer against the image
For text, compare each important word with the original and treat unclear passages as uncertain. For object identification or interpretation, ask what visible details support the answer, then verify consequential claims independently. An AI description is not proof of an object’s identity, authenticity, or the image’s origin or date.

Check whether your computer can run the chosen model
Hardware needs depend on the specific model and version. As one example, Ollama lists a minimum of 8 GB of VRAM for Llama 3.2 Vision 11B and 64 GB for its 90B version. Those figures are specific to those model versions, not universal requirements for local image analysis. Check the current model page or app catalog before downloading. Ollama: Llama 3.2 Vision
Understand the privacy and accuracy limits
With a local desktop model, inference takes place on the computer in that setup. That does not automatically mean the application makes no network connections or collects no telemetry; check the software’s own privacy and network settings. With LM Link, the model is on another linked machine and communication between linked devices is described by LM Studio as encrypted through Tailscale. LM Studio LM Link
In either setup, a model’s response is an interpretation of the image, not verified evidence. It may miss small text, confuse similar objects, or infer context that the picture does not establish. Be especially cautious when an answer could affect health, safety, or money.
What this looks like on a Mac
Apple’s WWDC26 materials describe local Mac AI workflows using MLX, including image understanding and image attachments.
