To keep an outdoor light out of a neighbor’s window, first decide whether the light is needed. If it is, aim and shield the fixture so its beam falls only on the area you need, then lower the output to the minimum useful level. A timer or motion sensor can limit when it runs, but neither will correct a beam that still points toward a window.
Start by identifying what the light needs to illuminate
Walk the area after dark and identify the specific task: a doorway, path, steps, or work surface. If the fixture is not serving a useful purpose, switch it off or remove it. If it is needed, treat the task area—not the whole yard—as the target.
DarkSky International and the Illuminating Engineering Society summarize the aim as: “Light where you need it, when you need it, in the amount needed, and no more.” Their Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting recommend shielding and careful aiming so light points downward and does not spill beyond the area where it is needed.
Re-aim and shield the fixture
Adjust the fixture so its beam lands on the task area and does not travel sideways or upward toward the neighboring window. Check the result from the window’s direction as well as from the area being lit; a fixture can illuminate a path adequately while still sending unwanted light toward a home.

Where possible, use a fully shielded or full cut-off fixture that directs light downward. The National Park Service also advises recessing the light source so the bulb is not visible at eye level. These features help control the direction of the light, but the mounting position and adjustment still matter.
If the existing fixture cannot be aimed or shielded enough to keep its beam off the window, consider replacing it with a more focused, better-shielded model. Before choosing, check the fixture’s distribution and shielding, whether it can be installed and aimed at the needed area, and whether its output can be reduced or controlled.

Reduce brightness and operating time
Use only enough light to perform the task. If the fixture is brighter than necessary, try a dimmer or a lower-output bulb where compatible with the fixture. DarkSky’s responsible home outdoor lighting guide also recommends choosing a bulb with a color temperature of 3000 K or lower when purchasing home outdoor lighting.
Use a timer or occupancy sensor if the light is needed only at certain times or when someone is present. These controls reduce unnecessary operation; they do not fix light trespass while the fixture is on. A bright, poorly aimed beam can still reach a window during the minutes it operates.

What to check when choosing a replacement
- Distribution and shielding: Look for a fixture that directs light onto the task area and blocks high-angle or sideways light toward the window.
- Mounting and aiming: Confirm that the location, mounting height, and adjustment range let you point the beam where it belongs.
- Output and controls: Check whether the fixture can provide a suitably low level and work with a dimmer, timer, or occupancy sensor as appropriate.
- Color temperature: For home outdoor lighting, DarkSky’s guide recommends 3000 K or lower. Warmer color is a secondary consideration; it does not by itself prevent a beam from entering a window.
- Specific approval status: If certification matters to you, check whether the exact model is currently listed as DarkSky Approved rather than inferring approval from a product category or general listing.
DarkSky’s Approved Luminaires guidelines, version 3.1, updated October 2025, describe program requirements that include photometric files and test reports for offered distribution types. Approval is an assessment of a product under that program, not a guarantee that a particular installation will keep light out of a nearby window. The actual result depends on the fixture’s distribution and how it is mounted and aimed.

Lighting requirements depend on the jurisdiction, and there is no universal limit established here for light entering a neighbor’s window. Check the rules issued by your city or other relevant local authority before concluding that a fixture violates an ordinance. The Illuminating Engineering Society’s PS-06-24 position on outdoor-light legislation and ordinances says the IES does not endorse or provide specific guidance for lighting ordinances.
