To change your TV picture size, open Settings or Quick Settings and look under Picture, Screen, Aspect Ratio, or Picture Size. Choose a mode that shows the full image without stretching it. Menu names and available options depend on the TV model, software, input, and content.
Change picture size on LG, Sony, or Samsung TVs
These manufacturer instructions are examples, not universal menu paths. If your labels differ, search your TV’s model-specific manual for “picture size,” “screen,” “aspect ratio,” “wide mode,” or “fit to screen.” Use the ordinary settings menu rather than a hidden service menu.
LG TVs
- On webOS 23 or 24, press Settings, then open Picture → Aspect Ratio. LG’s picture-fit guidance notes that a wrong size setting can stretch or distort the image.
- On webOS 22 or webOS 6.0, go to Settings → All Settings → Picture → Aspect Ratio → User Selection.
- On older webOS versions, go to Settings → All Settings → Picture → Aspect Ratio Settings → Aspect Ratio.
Try 16:9, then Original Ratio if the image still looks wrong. LG also notes that picture settings can vary by input unless Apply to All Inputs is selected; built-in apps may return to default settings after you exit or turn the TV off.

- Press Quick Settings.
- Open Settings → Display & Sound → Screen → Wide mode.
- Choose a mode suited to the source. Auto can change the mode when the channel or input changes; choose another mode if you do not want Auto to select a new one as the signal changes.
Sony’s Help Guide distinguishes Full, which can use overscan, from Full pixel, which does not. Which options appear and how they behave depend on the model.

Samsung TVs
- Go to Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Size Settings.
- Select a suitable size. Fit to Screen is intended to fit the picture to the screen, but can be unavailable depending on the model, region, app, input signal, or selected picture-size setting.
Samsung’s user guide explains that available sizes vary with the input signal. For some fit problems, it recommends checking the external device’s output resolution as well.
Choose a setting based on what looks wrong
| What you see | What to try | Trade-off or explanation |
|---|---|---|
| People or circles look stretched | Return to the source’s normal aspect ratio. On LG, try 16:9, then Original Ratio if needed. | A fill-screen mode may distort proportions. |
| Edges are cut off or the image looks enlarged | Turn off Zoom or Cinema Zoom; try a fit-to-screen or no-overscan option if available. | Zooming can crop part of the picture. Options and names vary by model. |
| Black bars at left and right | Check whether the source is 4:3 material displayed on a widescreen TV. | The bars can preserve the original proportions. Stretching fills the screen by changing them. |
| Black bars at top and bottom | Check whether the content is a wider-than-16:9 movie. | Bars can preserve the movie’s proportions. Removing them generally requires cropping or distortion. |
| The picture changes after switching inputs | Check the picture-size setting again on the new input. | Settings or available modes can depend on the input, signal, or app. |
Troubleshoot picture-size problems in order
- Identify the source. Note whether the picture comes from a broadcast channel, built-in app, HDMI device, game console, or computer. The signal can affect available picture-size options.
- Open the TV’s picture or screen settings. A streaming box’s resolution control is separate from the TV’s aspect-ratio setting, though the device’s output resolution may affect the result.
- Check for enlargement modes. If edges are missing, turn off Zoom, Cinema Zoom, or a similar mode and try a normal or fit-to-screen option.
- Compare another channel or source. If only one app or device has the issue, its settings or signal may be involved; if every source is affected, check the TV setting and model manual. This is a troubleshooting clue, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
- Preserve proportions when possible. Use zoom only if you accept that part of the picture may be cropped. Avoid stretching 4:3 content to fill a widescreen display unless you prefer that look.
Why the same TV may offer different sizes for different content
A TV receives different signals from channels, apps, and connected devices, and some picture-size options are only available for particular inputs or signal formats. Sony says picture size depends on signal content; changes in the signal, including advertisements, can bring black borders. An image that looks correct in one app may therefore need a different setting on another input.
