Replace the inactive receiver before your league’s lineup deadline with an eligible player from your bench—or, if your rules and timing allow, a free agent. Check the player’s status, the vacant slot’s eligibility rules, and the actual lock time first. Don’t assume a teammate will automatically inherit all of the receiver’s targets.
1. Confirm the receiver is out and check when the game starts
Verify the player’s status in your fantasy app and check current NFL injury or inactive information. ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury and inactive list to update fantasy injury statuses: ESPN’s player-status designations.
Then note the player’s scheduled kickoff. A “ruled out” designation is a reason to make a lineup decision, but the time you have to make it depends on your platform, contest, and league settings.
2. Check the lineup lock before making the swap
There is no single deadline that applies to every fantasy league. For example, NFL.com’s 2025 rules allow an owner to change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start, according to NFL.com’s clock. See the NFL.com Fantasy 2025 rules.

DraftKings uses different mechanics: ordinary contests lock when the first game begins, while eligible late-swap contests can allow changes only for players whose games have not started. Check the contest’s actual lock time and late-swap eligibility in the app; details are in DraftKings’ late-swap guidance.
3. Find a player eligible for the open slot
Look at your bench for a receiver who can legally fill the vacant WR position. If your lineup has a flex slot, an eligible player may fit there instead, depending on your league’s rules. Roster formats differ: NFL.com’s beginner’s guide to fantasy football describes common formats that include two WR slots and a flex, but your league settings—not a general example—determine which positions your lineup accepts.

Making the substitution matters because only active starters’ points count toward the weekly team total; a benched player’s score does not. Confirm the replacement appears in the intended starting slot before leaving the lineup screen.
4. Compare eligible replacements without guessing about targets
If you have more than one option, compare them using factors that matter in your league and for the games still ahead:

- Role and opportunity: Consider how the player is used in the offense and what opportunities seem likely. The available official rules do not establish a formula for predicting a replacement’s production.
- Scoring fit: Check your league’s scoring settings. Receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns may contribute differently depending on those settings.
- Matchup: Treat the opponent as one consideration, not a guarantee of a particular result.
- Kickoff time: A later-starting player may preserve substitution options if your platform and contest allow changes before that player’s game locks.
Do not assume the inactive receiver’s targets will all go to one teammate. The sources cited here explain lineup and scoring mechanics, not a dependable target-transfer rule or a quantified way to rank individual substitutes.

If your bench has no suitable eligible player, check whether an unrostered player can be added in time. A free-agent addition and a waiver claim are not interchangeable: a claim can remain pending until the league’s waiver process runs, so it may not put the player in your lineup before kickoff.

Quick pre-kickoff check
- Confirm the receiver’s status and scheduled game time.
- Check the exact lineup deadline and whether late swaps are available.
- Choose a replacement eligible for the open WR or flex slot.
- Compare role, league scoring, matchup, and kickoff time; avoid treating target redistribution as certain.
- Verify that the replacement is in the starting lineup and that any free-agent or waiver move has actually completed.
