Move the inactive wide receiver out of your starting lineup before his game locks, then start the best healthy player who is eligible in that slot. Check your fantasy app’s deadline and league settings: lineup locks, FLEX eligibility, scoring, and waiver timing can differ by platform and league.
What to do when your starting receiver is inactive
- Confirm the player is officially inactive. Check the NFL or team inactive announcement and the status shown in your fantasy app. NFL teams generally announce inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff, according to NFL Fantasy support; that is approximate timing, not a promise about when every app will update. A questionable or doubtful label is not the same as an official inactive announcement.
- Check the game and lineup lock. Use the deadline displayed by your platform and make the move before the player’s game starts. NFL Fantasy’s 2025 rules allow active/reserve changes before the player’s NFL team is scheduled to start. NFL.com likewise notes that players lock at game time on its platform. These are platform examples, not universal deadlines; league settings may differ.
- Look at your bench first. Choose the strongest healthy, eligible option already on your roster. The replacement does not have to be the inactive receiver’s NFL teammate. Only players in your active lineup contribute points to your weekly total, as explained in NFL.com’s beginner’s guide.
- Check whether the slot can be filled by a FLEX player. If your league’s FLEX allows a running back or tight end, one of them may be a better start than a lower-ranked receiver. NFL Fantasy describes a standard RB/WR FLEX, but formats vary and some leagues permit other positions. Check your league’s lineup settings or the eligible-position labels in your app.
- If needed, check free agents or waivers. Make sure a player is actually available and can be added before the relevant lock. A waiver claim may not process immediately; NFL Fantasy’s rules describe timing and waiver mechanics, while league settings can affect what happens in your league. Do not assume a claim will clear before kickoff.
How to choose between replacement options
Compare only healthy, eligible players whose games have not locked before you can act. Then weigh the factors that matter in your league:
- Scoring: Reception bonuses and other scoring settings can change which position or player profile is most valuable.
- Role and opportunity: Consider expected involvement, such as targets and the player’s role in the offense, rather than choosing solely by name or position.
- Matchup: Use matchup information as one factor, not as a substitute for a clear role or opportunity.
- Timing: A potentially attractive option is not useful if the player is already locked or cannot be added in time.
League formats and scoring vary, so there is no universally best replacement. NFL.com outlines common lineup and format differences in its fantasy football beginner’s guide.

Can your app make the swap automatically?
NFL Fantasy offers an Auto-Swap Inactives feature. When configured, it can bench players projected for zero and start the highest-ranked eligible player from a backup list you ordered. It is specific to NFL Fantasy; do not assume your platform or league has the feature, or that it is enabled. Check its settings and backup order rather than relying on an automatic change you have not configured.

Platform status and league settings matter
Fantasy apps may display injury information differently. ESPN says its Fantasy Football injury status uses the NFL’s official injury and inactive list; see ESPN Fan Support. Confirm the official inactive news as well as your app’s status, and use the lock time and eligibility rules shown for your own league. Commissioners can set custom scoring, roster, and transaction rules.
