If a running back is confirmed inactive, take him out of your active lineup before his game locks and replace him with the best eligible option available on your bench or through waivers. Check your league’s roster rules and your fantasy platform’s deadline first; deadlines and FLEX eligibility are not universal.
1. Confirm that the player is actually inactive
Check current team news and the status shown by your fantasy platform. “Out” means the player will not play; “Questionable” means his availability is uncertain, while “Doubtful” means he is unlikely to play. Status labels and reporting can change, so do not treat a questionable designation as a confirmed absence. 2. Check who can fill the open slot
Look at your bench before searching waivers. Find players eligible for the vacated roster slot, then compare their expected role and opportunity. If the running back was a starter, his team’s backup may be an option, but do not assume that one strong past game means the backup will get the same workload. Choose a player your league allows at running back. If you have no suitable bench option, check free agents or waivers and make sure you understand your league’s acquisition rules and roster limits before placing a claim. For a FLEX slot
Check which positions your league accepts at FLEX before making the swap. ESPN lists running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends as FLEX-eligible, but your league’s settings are authoritative; other formats may allow different positions. See ESPN’s position glossary for ESPN’s terminology.
3. Compare replacements by role, not just projection
Use this order when several players are eligible:
- Availability and eligibility: Confirm the replacement can occupy the open slot and will not be locked before you can make the change.
- Expected opportunity: Favor a player with a credible path to regular touches over someone whose appeal rests on one unusually productive game.
- Current status: Check the replacement’s latest injury news as well as the inactive player’s status.
- League context: Consider your scoring and lineup settings, then use matchup or schedule as a secondary factor.
Projections can help you compare options, but they are estimates rather than promises. NFL.com fantasy writer Adam Rank describes projected stats as “educated guesses and conjecture” and says they are not a guarantee: NFL Fantasy 101: How to manage your team.

4. Make the change before the relevant game lock
On ESPN, roster moves involving a player may be made until that player’s team is scheduled to begin its game in the scoring period. ESPN also requires lineup changes to respect position eligibility and available roster slots. This is ESPN’s documented rule, not a deadline that applies to every platform; check the rules and countdown in your league before kickoff. ESPN’s current instructions are in Setting Your Lineup.
