A player being cleared to play confirms availability—not a normal workload or a strong fantasy start. Check the official inactive report near kickoff, assess the player’s expected role, compare eligible alternatives under your league’s scoring, and make any lineup change before that player’s game locks.
What to do when a player is cleared
- Identify the game and lineup deadline. Check when the player’s NFL team is scheduled to start and confirm the lock time in your fantasy platform and league.
- Recheck availability close to kickoff. An earlier clearance is not the final active designation. NFL Fantasy Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before a scheduled game; use the NFL inactive report as the final availability check.
- Assess the likely role. Look for current team reporting about whether the player is expected to handle a normal workload or be limited. Clearance alone does not establish playing time or fantasy value.
- Compare your alternatives. Consider eligible bench players using your league’s scoring rules, roster positions and relevant matchup context. The platform rules cited here explain roster mechanics, not player-specific projections.
- Make the move before lock. If you decide to start the cleared player, confirm the position is eligible and submit the change before the applicable deadline.
Why clearance does not settle the start-or-sit decision
“Cleared” answers whether a player may be available; it does not tell you how often they will play, whether their role will be restricted, or whether they are a better choice than your alternatives. Treat the status update as one input, then weigh the expected role and workload against the best eligible option on your bench.
If you need a specific start/sit recommendation, the answer depends on the player, platform, scoring format, eligible alternatives and current role news. There is no universal fantasy recommendation based on clearance alone.
Watch the lineup lock and roster-slot rules
Deadlines and injured-slot rules vary by platform and league. NFL Fantasy’s 2025 Official Rules say an owner may change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start, as determined by NFL.com’s clock. The rules also describe restrictions once other players have started, so check your league’s exact deadline rather than assuming the whole lineup remains editable.

If the player is in an IR or injured slot, check whether the new designation requires moving them out and whether that affects roster validity or transactions:
- ESPN: ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury/inactive list. Its help page, updated August 18, 2026, says a player in an IR slot whose status changes from Out/IR to Questionable or Doubtful may remain there without invalidating the roster. A change from Out to no injury designation makes the roster invalid and requires an adjustment. See ESPN’s IR guidance and confirm current league settings.
- CBS Sports Fantasy: Injured-slot eligibility and enforcement depend on league settings; some leagues require managers to move players out when they no longer qualify. Check your league’s transaction settings in CBS Sports’ injured-slot guidance.

Prepare for late inactive news
Set your fallback before kickoff rather than waiting for a status alert. If your platform offers an inactive auto-swap, rank the backups you would actually use and verify the feature’s scope. Otherwise, choose an eligible replacement in advance and leave enough time to make the change before lock.
