Open Dashboard → Settings → Writing to set site-wide defaults for new posts, choose a theme-supported default post format, configure optional post-by-email fields, and maintain update-service addresses. Make the changes you need, then select Save Changes; WordPress confirms when the settings are stored.
What the Writing screen controls
WordPress uses the Writing screen for features involved in adding and editing posts, Pages, and other post types, plus optional functions such as remote publishing, Post via e-mail, and Update Services. It is a configuration page for defaults and services, not a replacement for the controls you use while editing an individual post.
To open it, sign in to the WordPress administration dashboard and select Settings → Writing. The controls you see can vary with the active theme and the WordPress features enabled on the site. In particular, the default-format control appears only when the active theme declares support for post formats.

Change the default category for new posts
The default category is a fallback, not a lock. When a new post is created without another category selected, WordPress assigns the category chosen in Default Post Category. You can still choose a different category in the editor for any specific post.

- In the dashboard, go to Settings → Writing.
- Locate Default Post Category.
- Open the category selector and choose the category you want used as the fallback.
- Review the rest of the page, then click Save Changes.
The category rule also matters when a category is removed. If a post was assigned only to the deleted category, WordPress moves that post to the current default category. Posts that have another category assignment are not described by this rule, so review your taxonomy after a large category cleanup.
Choosing a practical fallback
Pick a category that can safely receive an uncategorized post. A broad editorial category is usually easier to audit than a narrow campaign or seasonal category. If several people publish, agree on the fallback before changing it so that an accidental omission in the editor does not place content in an unexpected section.

Changing the default does not mean every existing post is recategorized. The control establishes what happens when a new post lacks another category and provides the destination for posts whose sole category is deleted.
Set a default post format when your theme supports it
Default Post Format is conditional. WordPress hides this control when the active theme does not support post formats. When it is available, the theme determines both the formats offered and how each format looks on the site. Common examples include Standard, Aside, and Gallery, but the exact choices and presentation belong to the theme.
- Open Settings → Writing.
- Look for Default Post Format.
- Select the format you want new posts to use by default.
- Click Save Changes.
If the control is missing, that is normally an availability issue rather than a permissions error: the active theme has not declared support for post formats. Switching to a theme that supports them can make the control appear, but the available formats and their visual treatment will then follow that theme. Do not assume that a format name has the same design or behavior across themes.

Default format versus an individual post
The Writing screen supplies a default for new content. During editing, the post editor can expose a format selector when the theme supports formats. That per-post choice affects the post you are editing and can differ from the site-wide default. If you change themes, check format-dependent templates and individual posts because the theme controls how those formats are rendered.

Configure Post via e-mail only when you need it
Post via e-mail is an optional feature for publishing through a dedicated mailbox. WordPress requires a secret e-mail account with POP3 access. The Writing screen asks for the mail server, port, login name, password, and a default mail category. WordPress documentation notes that administrators will likely need help from their web host or e-mail provider to obtain the correct values.
Fields you must have before saving
- Mail server: the POP3 server name supplied by your provider.
- Port: the POP3 port specified by that provider.
- Login name: the mailbox username.
- Password: the mailbox password.
- Default mail category: the category WordPress should use for posts received through this mailbox.
The mailbox should be secret and used for this purpose rather than being a public address. Anyone who can send to a publishing mailbox may be able to create content, so treat the address and credentials as sensitive. Use the provider’s documented server and port values instead of guessing; an incorrect value can prevent WordPress from connecting.
Set it up
- Create or obtain a dedicated mailbox with POP3 access from your e-mail provider or host.
- In WordPress, go to Settings → Writing.
- Enter the mail server, port, login name, and password in the Post via e-mail section.
- Choose the default category for mail-created posts.
- Click Save Changes.
If you do not need e-mail-based publishing, leave this optional feature unconfigured. Ordinary dashboard and editor workflows do not require a POP3 mailbox.
When a mail setup does not work
- Confirm that the mailbox actually provides POP3 access; an account that supports only a different retrieval method will not satisfy this requirement.
- Recheck the server name, port, login name, and password against the values supplied by the host or provider.
- Make sure the selected default mail category still exists.
- Ask the host or provider to verify connection requirements when the values are correct but WordPress still cannot connect.
Avoid repeatedly changing unrelated Writing settings while diagnosing mail access. Isolate the mailbox values first, then save and test the mail workflow according to your provider’s instructions.

Maintain Update Services
The Update Services area lets WordPress notify listed services when a new post is published. Each service address is entered as a URI on a separate line.
- Open Settings → Writing.
- Scroll to Update Services.
- Enter one service URI per line.
- Click Save Changes.
Only add addresses supplied by services you intentionally use. Keep one address per line so WordPress can treat each entry separately. This section is independent of your category and post-format defaults; changing it does not alter the taxonomy or appearance of a post.
Save, verify, and recover from mistakes
After changing any Writing setting, click Save Changes. WordPress displays a confirmation after the values are stored in the database. If you leave the page without saving, the previous values remain active.
Verification checklist
- Reopen Settings → Writing and confirm the selected default category or format is still shown.
- Create a test draft and inspect its category and, where supported, its post format before publishing.
- If you configured Post via e-mail, confirm the mailbox details and the selected mail category.
- Check that Update Services entries remain separated by line breaks.
A test draft lets you verify a default without creating a public post. Per-post changes made in the editor can override the site-wide defaults, so distinguish a failed global setting from an intentional editorial override.

The most common source of confusion is looking for a per-post control on the global Settings screen, or expecting a global default to overwrite an editor choice. Use the scope of each interface to decide where to work.

The editor’s Page/Post Settings sidebar handles categories, tags, discussion, status, visibility, scheduling, and—when supported—post format for the item currently open. These controls belong to the content-editing workflow, while Settings → Writing establishes defaults and optional services for the site.
Why a setting may seem to disappear
Two different conditions can hide a control:
- Theme-dependent availability: Default Post Format and per-post format controls depend on theme support.
- Editor interface preferences: Block Editor Preferences can determine which panels are shown in the editor and can enable a pre-publish checklist.
Check the active theme before troubleshooting a missing format selector. For a missing category, tag, discussion, status, visibility, or schedule panel, inspect the editor’s preferences and sidebar rather than the Writing screen.

The Writing page is not where expected
Use the administration dashboard path Settings → Writing. It is a dashboard settings page, not a panel inside the post editor. If you are already editing a post, return to the dashboard and open the Settings menu.
The default category is not applied to a draft
First confirm that the intended category is selected under Default Post Category and that you clicked Save Changes. Then inspect the draft’s editor sidebar: a category selected for that specific post takes precedence over the fallback behavior. Also verify that you are looking at a newly created post; changing the default does not recategorize existing content.
The post-format selector is missing
Confirm which theme is active. WordPress hides Default Post Format when the theme does not support post formats, and the editor likewise may not show an individual format control. The absence of the control is therefore expected for themes without support.

Post via e-mail cannot connect
Check all five required values—server, port, login name, password, and default mail category—and confirm that the account has POP3 access. If the provider’s values are correct and the connection still fails, contact the host or e-mail provider, as WordPress documentation anticipates provider assistance for this setup.
Update-service entries do not behave as intended
Return to Settings → Writing and check the formatting of the list. Each URI must occupy its own line. Remove an address you no longer intend to notify, add only addresses supplied by the relevant service, and save again.

Changes vanish after leaving the page
Reopen the Writing screen and look for the confirmation that WordPress saved the settings. If no confirmation appeared, repeat the change and click Save Changes before navigating away. Verify the result by reopening the page or creating a draft.
A sensible configuration workflow
- Set the category fallback: choose the broad category that should catch a post with no explicit category.
- Check theme support: configure a default format only if the active theme exposes the control and your editorial workflow uses formats.
- Leave optional mail publishing off unless required: it introduces a secret POP3 mailbox and provider-specific credentials.
- Review update notifications: keep only the service URIs your site intentionally uses, one per line.
- Save and verify: wait for the confirmation, then inspect a test draft and the relevant editor sidebar.
This sequence separates routine defaults from optional integrations. It also makes troubleshooting easier: category and format behavior can be checked in a draft, while mail and update-service issues can be examined independently on the Writing screen.
