To adjust a Sonos Sub, open the Sonos app and go to Settings > [room with the Sub] > Sound > Sub Audio. Use Sub Level to make the bass more or less prominent. Sonos documents one set of room-level Sub controls, not separate movie and music presets, so any content-specific adjustment is a manual listening choice.

#1 Best Overall
SaleSonos Sub 4 - Wireless Subwoofer - Black- Dual Sonos-engineered drivers generate deep, dynamic bass
- Ported enclosure enhances the bass response and low-frequency output
- Transform your home theater experience when you pair with Sonos Arc Ultra, Arc, or Beam
- Force-canceling acoustic architecture virtually eliminates distortion, buzz, and rattle
- Iconic sculptural design and updated matte finish that matches your Sonos system
In the S1 Controller app, the supported route is Settings > System. The exact controls available depend on your Sub model and app generation; Sub 4 and Sub (Gen 3) are not compatible with the S1 Controller. Sonos lists Sub (Gen 1, 2, and 3) as compatible with its home theater speakers. Sub 4 is compatible with Sonos home theater speakers except Playbar and Playbase. Check Sonos’s Sub setup and compatibility guidance for your configuration.
What each Sub Audio control does
-
Sub: Turns the Sub audio on or off.
-
Sub Level: Raises or lowers the Sub’s contribution to the room’s sound. Sonos does not prescribe a universal level for movies or music.
Rank #2
SaleSonos Sub Mini - Black - Compact Wireless Subwoofer- Unlock your entertainment when you pair Sub Mini with Beam or Ray and experience dramatic depth that puts you inside your shows, movies, and games.
- Within the acoustically sealed cabinet, dual custom woofers generate the full-toned low frequencies of a much larger subwoofer. Advanced processing further enhances the bass response.
- Both woofers face inward to create a force-canceling effect that neutralizes distortion.
- Trueplay tuning technology adapts the bass for your room's acoustics so it won't sound harsh, muddy, or flat—even if you place Sub Mini next to the wall. Supported iOS device required.
-
Phase Control: Switches between 0° and 180°. Sonos advises trying this if bass is insufficient at your usual listening position. When Trueplay tuning is enabled, Trueplay sets phase and you cannot change it manually.

Find a balance for movies and music
Because Sonos documents room-level Sub settings rather than content-specific profiles, the app does not provide a documented movie level that automatically changes to a music level. If you prefer more impact during films or less prominent bass for music, adjust Sub Level modestly and listen from your usual seat. Treat this as a practical way to find your preferred balance, not as a Sonos-recommended numeric setting.

For a fair comparison, play familiar material at a comfortable volume, make a small adjustment, and listen again from the same position. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what made the difference. There is no need to alter the setting if the bass already sounds balanced to you.
Check placement and Trueplay before changing settings repeatedly
Keep the Sub’s openings clear
Sonos recommends leaving at least one side of the Sub’s slot unobstructed. If the Sub is vertical against a wall, do not block its front opening. If it is horizontal on the floor, do not place objects on top of it. Placement can affect what you hear, so check for obstructions before relying on level changes to compensate.

Use Trueplay for the room
Trueplay measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings, and other surfaces, then fine-tunes the speaker for its placement. Sonos recommends running Trueplay again after moving a speaker or changing its configuration. You can toggle Trueplay adjustments, and EQ changes apply on top of them. See Sonos’s Trueplay tuning guidance.
Standard Trueplay tuning is available on supported iOS and iPadOS devices; Android does not support that standard tuning process. Certain Sonos products offer Quick tuning on iOS or Android. Sonos says Trueplay supports configurations with a Sub or Sub Mini, but the available method depends on the specific product and mobile device. Check compatibility before assuming your phone can run the tuning method you want: Sonos’s Trueplay compatibility list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse Sub Audio with a crossover setting
The Sub Audio page for a Sonos Sub is not where you set a crossover frequency. Sonos’s adjustable 50–110 Hz crossover applies to the RCA subwoofer output on Sonos Amp when it is connected to a third-party powered subwoofer; Connect:Amp has a fixed 80 Hz crossover. Those instructions are for a different setup, not a Sonos Sub connected to a Sonos room. Read Sonos’s crossover guidance if you are configuring that Amp output.

Sub and Sub Mini controls
Sonos documents the same basic Sub Audio controls—on/off, Sub Level, Phase Control, and reset—for the Sub Mini. Its phase control is also set by Trueplay and cannot be changed while Trueplay tuning is enabled. For setup and compatibility details, see Sonos’s Sub Mini guidance.
