For clearer call playback, try a small boost to the upper frequencies; for music, adjust only the range that sounds wrong, then compare with EQ off. EQ changes what you hear through your headphones—it does not necessarily make your outgoing microphone sound clearer to other people. Where you make the adjustment matters, too: a music-player EQ may not affect calls, while some device settings let you treat calls and media separately.
Know which audio EQ will change
Equalization (EQ) raises or lowers selected frequency ranges. Basic controls often offer broad bass, midrange, and treble adjustments. A parametric EQ lets you choose a frequency, how much to boost or cut it (gain), and how wide a range to affect (bandwidth or Q). RTINGS explains common headphone EQ tools, while Shure’s PLAY guide documents parametric controls in its app.
Before changing anything, identify where the control lives: in the headphone’s companion app, your phone or computer’s accessibility settings, a music player, or a separate EQ app. Those controls can apply to different playback paths. Don’t assume that a setting in a music player will also affect a phone call or third-party video-call app; check the app and device documentation.

If voices sound hard to understand in your headphones, start with a call-specific setting if your headphone app or device offers one. Otherwise, Shure’s PLAY guide recommends experimenting with a high-shelf filter above 1 kHz and a boost of 3–6 dB for speech intelligibility. That is a product-guide starting point, not a universal ideal. Make a small change, listen to a call or speech recording, and compare it with the EQ bypassed. If voices become piercing, sibilant, or tiring, reduce the boost or turn it off. Shure PLAY guide.

Fractal Design suggests a call profile focused on 1–4 kHz for its Scape product. Treat that as a Scape-specific suggestion, not a setting that is established as best for every headphone. Fractal Design Scape manual.
Keep headphone playback separate from your microphone
Playback EQ changes the sound you hear. It does not, by itself, establish that other people will hear a clearer version of your transmitted voice. For outgoing mic clarity, check microphone selection and placement, reduce room noise, and review the call app’s audio settings. Rely on device documentation before assuming any headphone EQ affects the microphone signal.

Use a separate setting for music
There is no single best headphone EQ curve for everyone. Headphone response, fit, source material, listening level, and personal preference all affect what sounds right. Begin by naming one problem—such as excessive bass, recessed vocals, or harsh treble—and adjust only the relevant region. Listen to familiar tracks, keep the change modest, and compare EQ on and off at similar perceived loudness. If the adjustment does not improve the specific problem, undo it rather than adding more changes.

On Apple devices and headphones that support Headphone Accommodations, you can use a listening-based setup or adjust audio manually. Apple’s documented path is Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. Turn on the feature, then use its audio customisation options. Apple provides separate application controls: Phone applies settings to phone calls, FaceTime calls, and third-party video-call apps; Media applies them to music and other supported media. Menu wording and compatibility can vary with software and hardware, so check Apple’s current instructions for your device. Apple Support: Adjust the audio settings on iPhone.

Apple notes that Transparency mode can affect how you hear your own voice or increase environmental noise. If either changes uncomfortably, review that mode while testing the accommodation setting.

If your EQ app lets you save presets, use separate names such as “Calls” and “Music” so you can switch intentionally. Persistence is product-specific:

- Sennheiser says that, for supported products, saved settings stay in the headphones and apply when you switch devices. Confirm the behavior in the guide for your specific headphone. Sennheiser support.
- Shure says PLAY EQ changes are saved to compatible connected AONIC devices. That behavior applies to supported devices, not to all headphones or EQ apps. Shure PLAY guide.
After saving a preset, test it in the app or call scenario where you intend to use it. A preset’s name alone does not guarantee that it reaches that audio path.
