In Google Messages, open your profile picture or initials, choose Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam protection, and switch Enable spam protection on or off. To report a suspicious text, touch and hold its conversation, tap Block > Report spam > OK. Reporting blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked; blocking alone does not send a spam report to Google.
What Google Messages spam protection does
Spam protection is an automated filter built into Google Messages on supported devices. It is turned on automatically where the feature is available. Google says it can recognize suspected spam, move messages into the spam folder, prevent some messages from being delivered, and suspend senders that violate its terms.
The controls are not identical on every Android phone. Google only shows the Spam protection menu when the device and its software support it, and individual features can depend on country, language, messaging protocol, and rollout status. If the menu described below is absent, use the troubleshooting section rather than assuming that your phone is unprotected.

- Do not reply. A response confirms that your number is active and can lead to more messages.
- Do not call the number in the message. A scammer can use a call to pressure you or imitate a legitimate organization.
- Do not open links or attachments. A link can lead to a fake sign-in page, a malicious download, or a payment request.
- Preserve evidence first if you may need it. Take a screenshot that includes the sender, time, message text, and any link. Keep the original conversation until you have finished any carrier, bank, or law-enforcement report.
- Verify independently. If a text claims to be from a bank, delivery company, government office, employer, or another service, open that organization’s official app or type its known website address yourself. Do not use contact details supplied by the text.
After preserving anything you need, use the in-app block-and-report control. You can also use your mobile carrier’s scam-reporting channel when one is available.

How to turn Spam protection on or off
Find the setting
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner.
- Tap Messages settings.
- Tap Protection & Safety.
- Tap Spam protection.
- Turn Enable spam protection on or off.
Google says the Spam protection entry appears only when it is available on your device. Turning it off stops the automatic protection features controlled by that switch; it does not undo a sender you have already blocked, delete existing items in Spam & blocked, or prevent your carrier from applying its own filtering.
What the two choices mean

The switch is separate from an individual conversation report. You can leave protection enabled and still choose to block a particular sender without sending a report, or report a conversation when you want Google to receive abuse information.
How to block and report a scam text
From the conversation list
- Open Google Messages and locate the suspicious conversation.
- Touch and hold the conversation. This selects it without opening the message.
- Tap Block.
- Tap Report spam.
- Tap OK to confirm.
The conversation is reported, the sender is blocked, and the thread moves to Spam & blocked. Future messages from that sender are handled as blocked rather than appearing as a normal conversation.

- Open the suspicious conversation.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Details.
- Tap Block & report spam.
- Tap OK.
This route produces the same result as the long-press route. If you only want to stop the sender and do not want to send a report, choose the blocking option without confirming the report when that choice is offered. Google describes reporting as optional.

What a spam report sends
A report is more than a local “hide this conversation” action. Google states that a submitted report can be used for abuse analysis and may also be shared with the mobile carrier. The exact payload depends on the message type and whether the conversation is a group.

Google’s stated privacy assurance is: The spammer can’t view your report and won’t know about it.
That does not mean the report is anonymous to Google or your carrier; it means the reported sender is not shown the report.
Block only or block and report?

Both actions move the conversation out of your ordinary inbox. The deciding difference is whether you authorize the report and its associated information sharing.

If Google Messages flags a legitimate conversation
Open the affected conversation and use its controls to mark it Not spam. Google says this sends information about the removed spam flag. When marking a conversation safe, you can decide whether to share the last 10 incoming messages.

Use Not spam only after confirming that the sender is genuine. If the message contains a link, verify the organization through a known website or app before following it. Marking a conversation safe does not prove that every later message from the sender will be trustworthy; it only corrects the current spam classification.
How detection works and what it means for privacy
On-device machine learning
Google says Spam protection uses machine-learning models that run on the device to identify known spam patterns. Detection can work without a data connection, which means routine classification does not require every message to be uploaded to Google.
There is one important exception for links: Messages may upload a URL to Google to check whether it is malicious. The URL check is about the link, not a request for you to open the page.
RCS and message-content processing
When RCS is enabled, Google says RCS chats are always end-to-end encrypted. Google may nevertheless process unencrypted message contents ephemerally for spam detection and model improvement. A submitted report is the action that sends the sender details and recent messages described above for abuse analysis.

These are different stages: automatic detection is primarily designed to happen on the device, while reporting deliberately provides additional evidence. Choose Block only if you need to stop a sender without making that report.
Scam Detection availability
Scam Detection is part of Spam protection where it is offered and is on by default in supported deployments. It is designed for conversations with people who are not in your contacts, a common pattern for impersonation and payment scams.
Google has described initial English-language availability in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, with expansion planned. That rollout statement does not guarantee availability on every phone in those countries. Your device model, Android or Messages version, account configuration, language, and phased rollout can all affect whether the feature and its warnings appear.

“Protection & Safety” is not listed
- Google may not support Spam protection on that device or in your current region.
- You may be using a different SMS application rather than Google Messages.
- The feature may be in a staged rollout and not yet enabled for your account or app version.
Confirm that Google Messages is the app you use for SMS and RCS, then check again after installing available app and system updates. Do not assume that installing an unrelated security app will recreate Google’s in-app controls.

“Report spam” is not offered
- Try the other route: touch and hold the conversation in the list, or open it and use More options > Details.
- The sender may already be blocked or the thread may already be in Spam & blocked.
- The conversation type, app build, or regional rollout may not support the same wording.
If no report control appears, you can still block the sender. Keep your evidence and use your carrier’s reporting process if you need to escalate a scam.
A real message went to Spam & blocked
- Open the Spam & blocked area in Google Messages.
- Select the conversation that was incorrectly classified.
- Use Not spam to restore it to normal handling.
- Review the sender and message independently before interacting with any links or requests.
If the sender continues to be misclassified, save important messages through a trusted channel and ask the sender to contact you by a known method while you investigate why the thread is being filtered.
A practical workflow for a suspected scam
- Pause. Do not reply, call, tap a link, download a file, or provide a verification code.
- Validate the claim independently. Check the organization’s official app, website, account statement, or a phone number you already trust.
- Preserve evidence. Capture the sender, timestamps, text, links, and payment instructions if you may need them.
- Choose the privacy level. Use block only if you want to stop the sender without reporting; use block and report spam when you want Google and potentially your carrier to receive the abuse evidence.
- Confirm the result. Look for the conversation in Spam & blocked and verify that the sender is blocked.
- Escalate financial or account harm. Contact your bank, payment service, employer, or the impersonated organization through a trusted channel. If you already disclosed a password, change it from the official site and enable stronger sign-in protection.
Spam protection reduces exposure; it cannot determine that every unexpected message is fraudulent. Treat a warning as a reason to stop and verify, not as a substitute for checking the sender’s claim.
