Windows 11 does not provide a graphic equalizer for every playback device. Start with Settings > System > Sound, choose the output device you use, and inspect its available audio options. If you need adjustable frequency bands and no equalizer appears, check the device maker’s audio app or consider a third-party equalizer, whose compatibility can vary.

Check the selected device’s Windows sound options

  1. Open Settings: Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Choose your output device: Select the speakers, headphones, or other device you actually use.
  3. Inspect its available options: Look for the device’s audio enhancements or other sound controls. The choices depend on the device and its driver; this page may not include a graphic equalizer. Microsoft documents the device-specific Audio enhancements setting in its Windows audio troubleshooting guidance.

Look for legacy effects in Control Panel

Some playback devices expose additional effects through the older Sound control panel:

  1. Open Control Panel and select Hardware and Sound > Sound.
  2. On the Playback tab, select the active output device and choose Properties.
  3. Open Enhancements, if the tab is available, and inspect the listed effects.

Windows’ documented default effects include options such as Bass Boost and Loudness Equalization DSP, but a device may show only some effects. These named controls do not necessarily provide adjustable frequency bands. Microsoft describes the Enhancements tab as a place to configure system effects in its documentation on Windows default audio processing objects.

What to do when there is no Equalizer option

Check the audio-control app and support page for the exact computer or audio-device model, and make sure you are looking at guidance for its installed driver. PC makers and audio hardware vendors can supply their own audio processing and configuration apps; the available controls are specific to the hardware and software. Microsoft explains this vendor role in its overview of audio processing object architecture.

  • Note: - 3.5mm phone audio cable is not included in the package. - A power bank or a quality charger can be used to supply power to the device, because an impure power supply may cause AC noise.

A Microsoft Q&A post illustrates why the menu can be confusing: one user reported seeing Bass Boost, Headphone virtualization, and Loudness Equalization without an item called “Equalizer.” That is an example of device-specific variation, not a guarantee that your device will show the same controls. See the Microsoft Q&A thread.

Equalizer APO with Peace An optional third-party system equalizer with a graphical interface described in a community setup guide. It is not built into Windows, and setup or operation may depend on the device, driver, and enhancement configuration.

If you consider Equalizer APO with Peace, consult the project’s current installation documentation before making system-level changes. The community guide describes selecting target devices in Equalizer APO’s Device Selector and using Peace as its graphical interface; it also advises setting the selected device’s Windows Audio enhancements property to Device Default Effects. Treat this as a possible setup path, not a compatibility guarantee or Microsoft-supported solution.

Troubleshoot sound problems after changing effects

If enabling or changing an enhancement makes audio distorted or otherwise problematic, first confirm that Windows is using the intended output device. Then try turning off Audio enhancements for that device. Microsoft recommends this as a troubleshooting step because enhancements can cause audio issues; it is not a general method for enabling equalization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the affected output device.
  2. Change its Audio enhancements setting to Off, if that option is shown, and check whether the sound improves.
  3. If turning enhancements off does not help, return to the same device page and restore the previous setting. For a legacy effect, revisit Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Playback > device Properties > Enhancements and restore the setting you changed.

There is no universal best equalizer setting

The available evidence does not establish one frequency curve or preset as best for everyone. Equalizer controls and results depend on the playback device, its driver, and the audio software in use. Start with a small change to the control you can actually access, listen to the result, and undo it if it makes the sound worse.
