To change brightness on many Samsung Notebook models, hold Fn and press F2 to dim the screen or F3 to brighten it. If those keys do not work, use the Windows brightness slider or Display settings. Key behavior and available controls depend on the laptop model and software version.
Use the keyboard shortcut first
- Hold down Fn.
- Press F2 to lower brightness or F3 to raise it.
These shortcuts are documented for Samsung Notebook models covered by Samsung’s U.S. instructions; keyboard markings and Fn behavior can differ. Some models support Fn Lock, which lets you use hotkeys without holding Fn. If the keys do not respond, check your model’s support page for its Fn Lock behavior and hotkey requirements: Samsung PC function-key guidance.
Adjust brightness in Windows
Open the taskbar’s quick controls or Action Center and move the brightness slider. This is a useful alternative when the keyboard shortcut is unavailable or inconvenient. On the Galaxy Book6 running Windows 11, Samsung documents this path: Settings > System > Display. The precise controls shown can vary with the Windows version and laptop.

Use Samsung Settings for display options
Open Samsung Settings and select Display to find Samsung-specific display controls available on your device. Some models offer display modes that change color and appearance—for example, Samsung lists Auto, Vivid, Natural, Photo Editing, and Movie on its U.S. Notebook support page. These modes affect how content looks; they are distinct from changing brightness. The available options vary by model and software version.

Why the screen may dim on its own
Some Samsung notebooks lower brightness when unplugged to conserve battery, and a very low battery may affect screen brightness. On compatible PCs, ambient-light sensing can also adjust brightness as room lighting changes. Samsung notes that automatic brightness is available only on compatible PCs.

- Charge the laptop if its battery is very low, then check whether brightness changes.
- In Windows Display settings, look for Change brightness automatically when lighting changes. This option appears only on compatible devices.

If the brightness controls do not work
- Try both the keyboard shortcut and the Windows brightness slider to determine whether one control route still works.
- Check whether Fn Lock is enabled and whether your model needs Samsung Settings or Book Settings for function-key hotkeys. Requirements differ by device and Windows generation; use the model’s support page before installing or changing utilities. Samsung’s function-key guidance covers its supported models.
- Install available Windows updates if the issue persists. Samsung’s troubleshooting page mentions a historical Windows 10 version 1809 issue on some models; that is not a general explanation for current brightness problems.
- If the display still behaves abnormally, contact Samsung Support for assistance.
