To protect a Yahoo account with codes from Google Authenticator, turn on Yahoo’s 2-step verification and choose the authenticator app method from Yahoo Account Security. Yahoo displays a QR code, you scan it in Google Authenticator, and then you type the six-digit code the app shows back into Yahoo to finish. Once it is set up, every sign-in to your Yahoo account, including Yahoo Mail, asks for the current code.
Setting up the authenticator app for Yahoo
Yahoo runs the enrollment, and Google Authenticator only generates the codes. Start on Yahoo’s account page, not inside Google Authenticator. Menu labels on Yahoo’s site can change, so if a label below differs slightly, follow the same sequence of choices.
- Sign in to Yahoo and open the Yahoo Account Security page.
- Under “Ways of signing in,” select “2-step verification.”
- Choose “Authenticator app” as the verification method. Yahoo requires at least two recovery methods on the account before this option appears, so add them first if it is missing.
- Select Continue. Yahoo shows a QR code.
- Open Google Authenticator on your phone, tap the add (+) control, choose the option to scan a QR code, and point the camera at the code on the screen.
- Return to Yahoo, select Continue, type the current six-digit code that Google Authenticator shows for the Yahoo entry, and select Done.
If you already use Yahoo Account Key to sign in, turn it off before you enable 2-step verification. Yahoo’s instructions state this as a requirement, so the authenticator setup will not complete while Account Key is still active.
What signing in looks like afterward
After setup, a sign-in takes three steps: enter your Yahoo password, enter the code currently shown in Google Authenticator, and select Verify. Codes change on a short timer, so use the one visible at the moment you type it. If a code is rejected, wait for the next one rather than retrying the same code.

Requirements and common problems
- The authenticator option is missing. Yahoo needs at least two recovery methods on the account first. Add them under Yahoo Account Security, then return to the 2-step verification settings.
- Enrollment will not proceed. Check whether Yahoo Account Key is still on. Yahoo says it must be disabled before 2-step verification can be enabled.
- The code is rejected. Confirm that the phone’s clock is set to automatic. Codes depend on the time, and a clock that drifts can produce codes Yahoo does not accept.
- You want to use Google Authenticator offline. Google says the app can generate codes without internet or mobile service, and that holds for the code generation itself. It does not mean every Yahoo sign-in or recovery step works without a connection, because Yahoo still has to check the code on its side.
Recovery codes and the phone-loss scenario
Yahoo may offer an emergency recovery code during enrollment. Write it down or print it, store it somewhere safe that you can still reach, and keep it separate from the phone. This code is for getting into the Yahoo account if the authenticator app cannot be used.
Google backup codes are a different thing. They belong to a Google Account’s own 2-Step Verification and do not open Yahoo. Google describes a backup code as a fallback for when normal verification is unavailable, and each code stops working once it has been used. Keep the two sets of codes clearly labelled so you do not mix them up.

Losing or replacing your phone
Google Authenticator codes live on the phone where the app was set up, so a lost or wiped phone removes your ability to generate Yahoo codes. Before you change phones, make sure you have either the Yahoo emergency recovery code you saved or working recovery methods on the account. Those are what get you back in. Without them, you depend on Yahoo’s own account recovery process, and Yahoo’s instructions do not describe a way around it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen you move to a new phone, the simplest path is to sign in to Yahoo with a code or recovery method you still have, remove the old authenticator entry, and enroll the new phone through the same steps above.

What this setup does not cover
This configuration protects the Yahoo account only. It does not make Yahoo a sign-in method for your Google Account, and it does not change how Google Authenticator works for your other accounts. Yahoo also lists a security key as a separate account-security option. It is not needed to add Google Authenticator, so you can ignore it for this setup.
The steps above come from Yahoo Help’s “Add two-step verification for extra security” page and Google Account Help’s “Get verification codes with Google Authenticator,” “Turn on 2-Step Verification,” and “Sign in with backup codes” pages.
