A USB-C-to-USB-A cable lets you connect a USB-C device to an older PC’s existing USB-A port. It does not add a USB-C socket to the computer. To install a physical USB-C port in a desktop, use a compatible PCIe expansion card and check which features it actually supports.

Choose the option that matches what you need

What you want What to use What it provides
Connect a USB-C device to an existing USB-A port A USB-C-to-USB-A cable suitable for the host and device A connection through the PC’s existing USB-A port; no new port is added.
Add a physical USB-C port for data to a desktop A USB-C PCIe expansion card that fits an available slot A port whose data rate and other capabilities depend on the card’s specifications.
Send video through the new USB-C port A card that explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and the required video signal path Video only if the card and PC provide the necessary support and connections.
Get high-power charging or USB4 A card explicitly specifying the required Power Delivery or USB4 capability Only the functions listed for that specific card and platform.

Connect a USB-C device using an existing USB-A port

If you only need to connect a USB-C peripheral to the PC, use a USB-C-to-USB-A cable. USB-IF documentation recognizes USB-C-to-legacy-host cable assemblies, including USB-C-to-Standard-A cables: USB-IF cable and connector specifications. The cable uses a USB-A port already on the computer; it does not create a USB-C receptacle or upgrade the PC’s capabilities.

Add a physical USB-C port to a desktop

For an actual new port, install a USB-C PCIe expansion card. The PC needs an available slot compatible with the card, and you should check the card’s fit and any supplemental power requirements before buying. A manufacturer example, StarTech’s PEXUSB312EIC, adds USB-C and USB-A ports through PCIe: StarTech PEXUSB312EIC specifications.

Check what the card supports

USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed data rate or set of features. Read the card’s specifications for data speed, power delivery, video, and compatibility with other protocols. The PEXUSB312EIC is a data-focused example: StarTech states, “The card does not support DP alt mode or USB Power Delivery,” and it also does not support Thunderbolt devices (manufacturer specification).

Video over USB-C needs more than a USB-C port

To send video through USB-C, the port and card must support DisplayPort Alt Mode and have a compatible video signal path. Microsoft describes Alt Mode as allowing audio and video projection to DisplayPort displays over a USB connector (Microsoft USB Type-C guidance). A data-only expansion card will not provide this function merely because it has a USB-C socket.

Some higher-capability cards require a separate connection from the graphics card or motherboard. For example, MSI says its USB4 card uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface; for display output, a graphics-card or motherboard DisplayPort output must connect to the card’s DisplayPort input (MSI USB4 card specifications). Check the exact card’s platform and cabling requirements before purchase.

Do not assume USB-C means fast charging or USB4

USB Power Delivery and USB4 are specific capabilities, not automatic consequences of having a USB-C connector. Microsoft documents Type-C power and alternate-mode features separately (Microsoft OEM design guidance). Confirm that the card explicitly supports the charging level, protocol, and devices you intend to use.

Before choosing an expansion card

  • Confirm that the desktop has an available PCIe slot compatible with the card.
  • Check the card’s data rate and supplemental power requirements.
  • If video matters, verify DisplayPort Alt Mode support and whether a DisplayPort cable must run from the graphics card or motherboard to the expansion card.
  • If charging or USB4 matters, confirm those features in the card’s own specifications rather than inferring them from the connector.
