To keep shoppers on your own website, have your server create a Stripe Checkout Session in embedded UI mode and render Checkout in your page. The AI assistant should propose a cart, not set its authoritative prices or trigger fulfillment. Your server must validate the cart against current catalog data, show the confirmed order to the customer, and use verified Stripe webhooks—not a browser success page—to determine payment and fulfillment state.
If “without leaving your site” means staying inside ChatGPT or another AI platform, that is a different integration. Stripe embedded Checkout is for a merchant-owned webpage; platform-native checkout follows the platform’s own protocol and access rules.
Choose where the customer should complete checkout
“Stay on the site” can describe two different experiences. Decide which one you mean before building the integration:
Recommended Free Tools
| Customer experience | Relevant approach | What remains authoritative |
|---|---|---|
| The shopper pays on the merchant’s own website | Stripe Checkout in embedded UI mode. A hosted Checkout Session instead sends the customer to Stripe’s hosted page. See Stripe’s Checkout Sessions API reference. | The merchant server validates the cart and creates the Checkout Session, using current catalog and order data. See Stripe’s fulfillment guide. |
| The shopper pays within an AI platform’s interface | Evaluate Stripe Delegated Checkout or the AI platform’s commerce protocol. These are not the same as rendering Stripe’s embedded Checkout form on your website. See Stripe’s guide to building agentic commerce and OpenAI’s Agentic Checkout Spec. | The selected protocol defines the handoff. The seller still needs to handle its order responsibilities; check the relevant platform’s requirements and access before committing to this architecture. |
For a merchant-owned website, the practical path is to let the assistant help build a proposed cart, then hand that cart to your server for validation and payment setup.

Build the website flow around server-verified order data
1. Let the assistant submit product choices, not prices
Have the assistant send product identifiers and quantities to a merchant endpoint. Do not accept a model-generated total, price, discount, or availability claim as authoritative. Resolve those details from the merchant’s current catalog on the server. Stripe advises keeping sensitive inventory data, including price and availability, server-side to prevent client manipulation: Stripe’s Checkout fulfillment documentation.
2. Validate the cart and show the final order
Check that each product exists, can still be purchased, and has an allowed quantity. Apply the merchant’s current options, shipping or fulfillment choices, and tax treatment as relevant. Then show the shopper the server-calculated items and final total before creating the Checkout Session. This gives the customer a chance to catch an incorrect assistant suggestion or an outdated cart.

- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Keep an internal cart or order reference so the payment can be reconciled to the right order. Stripe Checkout Sessions support client_reference_id for a customer or cart reference and also support metadata; see the Checkout Sessions API reference.

3. Create a Session for the transaction
A Checkout Session represents a customer’s session as they pay for one-time purchases or subscriptions through Checkout or Payment Links, according to Stripe’s Checkout Sessions API reference. Choose the Session mode that matches the transaction:

- Read data from all 3 tracks, high and low coercivity cards, ISO7811, AAMVA, CA DMV and most magnetic card data formats.
- Work on Windows, Mac and other USB capable systems. Work with TXT, notepad, Word, Excel, POS systems and son on.

Create the Session from the validated server-side order, not directly from an untrusted browser total or assistant response. Stripe recommends creating a new Session for each payment attempt. In embedded mode, render Checkout on the merchant site; in hosted mode, send the customer to the Session URL. Stripe’s API reference documents success_url as unavailable for embedded and custom modes, and a return_url is conditionally required when redirect-based payment methods are enabled.
4. Fulfill only after verified payment events
Listen for the Checkout Session webhook events relevant to your order flow, including completion and asynchronous payment success or failure. Verify each Stripe signature using the unmodified raw request body and your webhook signing secret. Acknowledge events quickly with a 2xx response, and make order handling safe to retry so duplicate deliveries do not create duplicate fulfillment. Stripe explains webhook handling and fulfillment in its Checkout fulfillment guide.

- Accept all major credit and debit cards for one low rate.
- Accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express—no hidden fees.
- Track your earnings and view your complete sales history from the free Square Point of Sale app.
- Works with Apple and Android devices that have a 3.5 mm headphone jack. No charging needed
A customer reaching a success or return page is not proof that payment succeeded. Treat the verified payment event as the authority for changing order and fulfillment state.
5. Test payment and webhook states before going live
Use Stripe’s sandbox or CLI test events to check the webhook integration before launch. In your own order logic, test a successful payment, authentication, a decline, a delayed payment, retries, and duplicate event handling. Stripe’s fulfillment documentation covers testing webhook-driven fulfillment.

If checkout must stay inside the AI platform
Stripe Delegated Checkout
Stripe describes Delegated Checkout as an API approach for checkout embedded in AI interfaces. It is separate from Checkout embedded on a merchant’s own site. Stripe’s agentic-commerce guide describes a scoped, time-limited payment credential for this model; the seller remains responsible for order handling, tax, fulfillment, and refunds. Review Stripe’s current agentic-commerce documentation for the approach and its availability.
ChatGPT’s Agentic Checkout Spec
OpenAI’s Agentic Checkout Spec describes a ChatGPT-specific flow in which merchant endpoints create, update, and complete checkout sessions, while order lifecycle events are sent by webhook. The merchant keeps its existing payment service provider. The specification calls for request authentication, signature verification, idempotency, input validation, safe retries, and conformance checks.
OpenAI’s documentation says Instant Checkout is limited to approved partners. Confirm eligibility and current platform requirements before choosing this route; it is not a general substitute for embedding Stripe Checkout on your own site.
