Only some Roku streaming players can add storage, and the method depends on what you want to do. If your player has a microSD slot, a card can expand the memory used to install new apps and channels. If you want to play your own photos, videos, or music, a USB drive or a network media server is the route, and a microSD card will not help. If you are seeing an “insufficient memory” message, a card may not be the fix at all. Check your model first, then choose the path that matches your goal.
Start with the goal, not the hardware
Readers usually arrive with one of three problems, and each one has a different answer. Mixing them up is the most common reason people buy the wrong thing.
| Your goal | What your Roku needs | What to use | What it does | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Install more Roku apps and channels | A Roku player with a microSD slot | microSD card, Class 2 or faster, at least 2 GB | Expands the internal memory used for new app and channel installations | Model-specific; formatting erases the card; not for personal media |
| Play your own photos, music, or videos | A Roku device with a USB port, or a media server on your home network | USB drive or a network media server | Plays local files through Roku Media Player | File system, media format, and power needs vary |
| Clear an “insufficient memory” or “Can’t run app” message | Any Roku reporting the error | Remove unused apps, restart, and check your internet connection | Can resolve the error when the cause is low storage or a connection problem | The message can have more than one cause, so a card may not help |
Check whether your player has a microSD slot
Roku’s support article on microSD expansion says that “some older Roku streaming devices” allow you to expand internal memory with a card so you can install more apps from the Roku Streaming Store. The word “some” matters. Many current players have no card slot, and the article does not give a full list of compatible models.
Before buying anything, confirm the following:
- Look up your exact model number, which is printed on the bottom or back of the player and is also shown in the Roku settings menu.
- Inspect the physical player for a microSD card slot. Do not assume a slot exists because a similar model has one.
- If you are checking an older device, Roku’s historical product comparison chart shows that card and USB ports varied from model to model. That chart is dated, so use it only as a clue and confirm against current Roku product information.
If your player has no slot, a card cannot provide this type of expansion, and you should use the troubleshooting steps or the USB route described below.

Choose the right microSD card
For best results, Roku recommends a Class 2 or greater microSD card with a minimum of 2 GB of storage. That is a minimum, not a ceiling. Roku’s support article does not state a maximum capacity, so do not assume that a large card, such as one of 256 GB or more, is supported on your model unless Roku’s information for that player confirms it.
Install and format the card
Installing a card erases any data already on it, so copy anything you want to keep to another device before you begin. The card is optional; the player works without it.

- 5-year limited manufacturer warranty
- Unplug the HDMI cable if it blocks access to the slot, then reconnect it after the card is installed.
- Insert the microSD card into the slot until it clicks into place.
- When the on-screen prompt appears, select Format, then select Continue.
- Wait for formatting to finish, then select OK to acknowledge completion.
- New app and channel installations now use the card’s storage. Apps you install afterward are stored there.
Roku’s instructions describe the prompt labels as shown. If your screen uses different wording, follow the option that describes formatting the card.

What happens if you remove or move the card
Removing the card does not permanently delete your purchased or installed apps. However, any app that was stored on the card must be downloaded again before you can use it. Installed channels do not transfer to another Roku player by moving the card. If you put the card into a different Roku player, that player will reformat it, which erases the contents.

Play personal photos, music, and videos instead
A microSD card is for app installations only. Roku explicitly says it is not intended for personal photos, videos, or music. For personal media, use Roku Media Player with a USB drive or a media server on your local network. Support depends on the model, so confirm that your player has a USB port before you buy a drive.
Supported file systems
Roku’s Media Player support article lists FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, exFAT, and HFS+ as supported USB file systems, and says that different partitions on a drive can be accessed. Roku’s separate USB troubleshooting article lists a narrower set and says exFAT may not be supported in that context. Because the two pages differ, check the current guidance for your model. Do not reformat a drive to match a file system unless you have backed up its contents first.

When a USB drive is not recognized
Some drives need more power than the Roku’s USB port can supply. Use the drive’s own power adapter if it came with one. If it did not, Roku recommends a powered USB hub. Work through these checks in order:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm the drive uses a file system listed in Roku’s current Media Player guidance.
- Connect the drive’s power adapter, or place a powered USB hub between the drive and the Roku.
- Restart the Roku and check whether the drive appears in Roku Media Player.
Fix the “insufficient memory” message without buying storage
Roku says that “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app,” and “Insufficient memory” messages can reflect low storage or a problem with your internet connection. Because the cause can differ, start with the free steps below before assuming you need a card.

- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.

- Restart the device.
- Remove apps you no longer use. Highlight the app on the Home screen, press the Options button (the asterisk key on most Roku remotes), and select the option to remove the channel.
- Check your internet connection. A weak or unstable connection can produce the same error message.
If the message persists after these steps and your player has a microSD slot, a compatible card may then be worth considering. If there is no slot, the card route does not apply.
Practical buying notes
- When searching for a card, use terms such as “microSD card for a compatible Roku player” and confirm the Class 2 or greater rating and 2 GB minimum on the packaging.
- Buy a USB drive only for personal-media playback. It will not add app-install memory.
- A powered USB hub is worth considering only if your drive needs more power than the Roku port supplies.
Roku’s support material does not name a particular card brand or retailer, so choose a card by its specifications rather than by a brand recommendation from Roku.
