To add a Sonos home-theater speaker to an LG OLED, connect the speaker to the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, set the TV’s sound output to the HDMI ARC option, and finish setup in the Sonos app. Sonos’s TV guidance treats HDMI ARC/eARC as the connection for TV audio and TV control on its home-theater speakers, so use it whenever both your TV and speaker support it. The steps below follow Sonos’s and LG’s official setup documentation. Menu names differ between LG models and software versions, so check your own screens against the instructions.
What you need before you start
- Your exact LG OLED model number. It is printed on the rear label and listed in the manual or the model’s specification sheet. Settings and features vary from one OLED series to another.
- Your exact Sonos model. Sonos’s TV requirements page says Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam, and Amp need an HDMI ARC port for CEC or supported voice-assistant control. Dolby Atmos from a TV has its own requirement, covered below.
- The HDMI cable. Sonos’s Arc setup guidance says an HDMI cable is included with Arc, so most readers will not need to buy one.
- The Sonos app installed on a phone or tablet on the same Wi-Fi network as the speaker.
Step-by-step setup

Find the ARC port on the TV. Look on the back or side of the TV for an HDMI input labeled ARC or eARC. Any other HDMI input will not give you the TV audio return path described below.

Connect the speaker to that port. Run the HDMI cable from the Sonos speaker’s HDMI connection to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. Sonos’s Arc setup guide says the app walks you through the cables and ports, so keep it open while you connect. LG’s connection guide describes the same link: the soundbar’s TV eARC/ARC output goes to the TV’s HDMI ARC input.

Select the HDMI ARC output on the TV. In LG’s general webOS guide, the route is
Sound > Sound Out > Optical / HDMI (ARC). Labels and steps vary by model and software version. If your TV uses different wording, look for the sound-output option that refers to HDMI ARC.#1 Best Overall

Set up the speaker in the Sonos app. Follow the prompts to add the speaker to your home and room. Sonos’s Arc setup guide states the requirement directly: “Your Arc needs to be set up using the Sonos app before it can play TV audio.” Playing TV audio before this step is complete will not work.

Test with TV content. Start a show or app on the TV and confirm sound comes from the speaker. If you need to know which audio format is arriving, check the Sonos app, which Sonos says shows Dolby Atmos reception.

If there is no sound
- Confirm the cable is in the port labeled ARC or eARC, not a standard HDMI input.
- Confirm the TV’s sound output is set to the HDMI ARC option. A different output setting will send sound elsewhere.
- Confirm the Sonos app setup finished. Sonos states that Arc cannot play TV audio until setup is complete.
If your LG OLED has no HDMI ARC port
Sonos documents an optical audio connection as a fallback for compatible products. Its guidance says the optical adapter is included only with Arc and Beam. Check your Sonos model before you rely on this route, because the adapter is not included with every speaker.

The optical route has two limits that matter for daily use. It does not allow CEC or voice control of the TV through that connection, so the speaker will not respond to the TV’s remote in the same way. It also cannot carry Dolby Atmos from the TV, since Atmos from a TV requires an ARC/eARC connection.

Dolby Atmos requirements
Sonos’s support article on Dolby Atmos from a TV says that Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, and Beam (Gen 2) need HDMI ARC/eARC to play Dolby Atmos from a TV. If Atmos is your reason for buying or setting up the speaker, confirm the TV port and the speaker model together before you buy anything.

Check your model before relying on a feature
LG’s OLED G4 series specification sheet lists an eARC (HDMI 2) port and an optical digital audio output. That sheet applies only to the G4 series. It does not establish the same ports, labels, or audio features for other LG OLED generations or sizes, so check the specification sheet or manual for your exact model.

Bluetooth is not a substitute for this setup. Sonos’s TV guidance describes the HDMI ARC/eARC connection as the home-theater link, and Bluetooth does not provide the TV control or Atmos support covered above.
