To add someone to VIP in iPhone Mail, open one of their messages, tap their name or email address in the header, choose View Contact Card, then tap Add to VIP. Messages from that sender will be marked with a VIP flag and appear in the VIP mailbox.
Add a sender to VIP in iPhone Mail
- Open Mail and open a message from the person.
- Tap the sender’s name or email address in the message header.
- Tap View Contact Card.
- Tap Add to VIP.
Apple documents this workflow for its Mail app on iPhone in its guide to flagging or blocking emails. Labels and screen details may vary as Apple updates iOS.

Find the VIP mailbox
If VIP is missing from the Mailboxes list, open the list in Mail, tap Edit, and select VIP. The mailbox collects messages from senders you have marked as VIP.
Change VIP alerts
To adjust notifications for VIP messages, open Mail and tap the info button beside VIP. Tap VIP Alerts, then choose the alerts you want. Apple’s iPhone Mail mailbox guidance describes the mailbox and alert controls.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Does the person need to be saved as a contact?
No. The contact-card flow lets you create a new contact or add the sender’s email address to an existing contact, but those are optional contact-management actions. To give the sender VIP status, use Add to VIP. These steps apply to Apple Mail on iPhone; they do not establish that every third-party email provider’s app behaves the same way.
