You can’t install RPCS3 on a PS4. The project’s FAQ describes RPCS3 as a PlayStation 3 emulator for computers, and it lists Windows and Linux as targets. RPCS3’s current guides list Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD and Android. PS4 isn’t on either list. So the “add PS3 games and firmware” workflow below applies to a supported computer, not to the console.
The process has two separate inputs. The first is the official PS3 firmware, which is the system software. The second is your own legally owned PS3 game dumps, which you add through File → Add Games.

Why “RPCS3 on PS4” doesn’t apply
RPCS3 emulates PS3 software. The RPCS3 materials reviewed don’t name the PS4 as a host. PS4 system software and PS4 discs are also not the inputs RPCS3 expects. Sony describes PS4 physical games as Blu-ray discs made for the PS4, which is a different platform from the PS3 titles RPCS3 targets.

If you own a PS4 and want to play PS3 games, RPCS3 isn’t a route on that console. Install it on a supported computer instead.

What you need on a supported computer
- A host system on RPCS3’s supported list: Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD or Android, per its current guides. The older FAQ named only Windows and Linux, so use the guides page for platform questions.
- Official PS3 firmware (the PS3 system update).
- PS3 game dumps that you own legally.
RPCS3 doesn’t require you to buy a USB drive. Its documented flow is installing the emulator, then selecting the firmware and game files.
Step 1: Install the PS3 firmware
RPCS3’s guides say to install official PS3 firmware inside the emulator. Sony’s PS3 support page named system software 4.93 as the current version when this was written (October 2026). Check that page for the latest version before downloading.
Sony’s own instructions describe a different job: updating a physical PS3. For that route you format a USB drive as FAT32, create a PS3 folder with an UPDATE folder inside it, and save the file as PS3UPDAT.PUP. On the console you then go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media. Nothing reviewed shows that RPCS3 needs this USB layout, so don’t treat it as an RPCS3 requirement.

Sony also warns: “Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site.” That is a warning about updating a console. It isn’t a legal ruling about emulators, and it isn’t an RPCS3 instruction.
For the exact menu path and file handling in your RPCS3 version, follow RPCS3’s own Quickstart Guide, since the interface can change between releases.
Step 2: Add your games
With the firmware installed, add games from the RPCS3 window using File → Add Games. RPCS3 expects dumps of games you own. Dumping discs and handling specific formats are covered in the project’s Quickstart Guide. Follow that rather than a third-party tutorial, because required file layouts can change.

Step 3: Check the game’s compatibility
Adding a game doesn’t guarantee it will run well. RPCS3 maintains a compatibility list. In its September 2026 table, entries were classed as follows:

These are database entries and status labels, not necessarily unique titles. They also don’t promise that your copy or hardware will behave the same way. The counts change over time, so check the live list for the specific game before you spend time on setup.
