To add product filters, first decide which collection, catalog, and search pages should be filterable, then make sure your product data and theme or template support faceted navigation. Shopify stores configure filters in Search & Discovery and enable them in a compatible theme. WooCommerce stores using block templates add the Product Filters block beside Product Collection, then choose the filter types and mobile behavior.

Plan the filters before changing your store

Filters only help when they represent attributes shoppers can understand and your catalog applies consistently. Typical choices include price, availability, brand or vendor, category, product type, size, color, material, rating, and other structured attributes.

Choose the pages that need filtering

  • Collection or category pages: useful when shoppers browse a defined product group.
  • Search results: useful when a query still returns many products.
  • Both: usually the best experience for a large catalog, provided the theme or template supports each context.

Clean up product data first

A filter can only offer useful choices when the underlying fields are populated. Standardize spelling and capitalization for attributes, assign products to the correct categories, and fill in options, tags, metafields, availability, prices, ratings, or brands before configuring facets. Otherwise a filter may be empty, show duplicate-looking values, or hide products shoppers expect to find.

Shopify: configure filters, then display them

Shopify separates filter configuration from storefront display. The Search & Discovery app defines which facets exist; your theme controls whether customers can see them.

1. Create filters in Search & Discovery

  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps > Search & Discovery.
  2. Open Filters and select Add filter.
  3. Choose a source such as availability, category, price, product type, tags, or vendor.
  4. For custom facets, choose product options, product metafields, category metafields, variant metafields, or metaobjects. Metafield filters require definitions and values on the relevant products or variants.
  5. Optionally rename the customer-facing label, change display or behavior, group values, and select a sort order.
  6. Save the filter and reorder filters as needed.

Shopify shows only values relevant to the current collection or search results. Different filter dimensions combine with AND logic; selecting multiple values within one filter uses OR behavior by default. Certain tag and list-based metafield filters can be configured for AND behavior. The available sources and settings are documented in Shopify’s filter documentation.

2. Enable filters in the theme

Creating a filter does not automatically put it on the storefront. In the theme editor, open the collection Product grid settings and the search-results settings, then enable storefront filtering where those controls are available. The exact labels vary by theme. Shopify’s theme instructions explain the display step.

If the theme does not support filters, Shopify lets you create them in Search & Discovery but does not display them to customers. Compatible custom storefronts can implement filtering with Shopify’s filter Liquid API or Storefront API.

Shopify limits to account for

Limit What it means
25 filters per store Shopify-specific maximum documented by Shopify Help Center.
100 values per filter No more than 100 customer-visible values are shown for one filter.
Collections over 5,000 products Shopify does not display filters for these collections.
Searches over 100,000 results Shopify does not display filters for these searches.
Non-default currencies Price filters do not display for currencies other than the shop’s default currency.

These thresholds apply to Shopify and should not be assumed for other commerce platforms. For headless implementations, Shopify’s current Storefront API ProductFilter reference lists availability, category, price, product type, vendor, tag, product metafields, taxonomy metafields, variant metafields, and variant options; availability and price are enabled by default and are customized through Search & Discovery.

WooCommerce: add the core Product Filters block

WooCommerce’s block-based catalog uses the Product Filters block alongside Product Collection. This route needs no separate filter extension for the common filter types documented by WooCommerce.

1. Place the block in the catalog template

  1. Go to Appearance > Editor > Design > Templates.
  2. Open the Product Catalog template, or the relevant collection, archive, or taxonomy template.
  3. Add Product Filters near Product Collection.
  4. Add and configure the individual filter elements you want.
  5. Save the template and check the catalog at desktop and small-screen widths.

The core block supports price, rating, attribute, availability, category, brand, and tag filters. Attribute, availability, category, and brand choices can appear as lists or chips, and some can show product counts. Active-filter chips can allow shoppers to remove one selection or clear all selections. On small screens, filters can collapse into a drawer. By default, the product list updates without a full-page reload; the Product Collection setting can instead force full-page reloads. See WooCommerce’s Product Filters block documentation.

2. Make sure choices can populate

An attribute filter needs at least one product using the selected attribute to present meaningful choices. A rating filter appears only when rated products exist. If a filter is missing options, check the products and taxonomy assignments before changing the block.

When a WooCommerce extension is justified

Use an extension when the core block does not provide a required query model, editor control, multi-select workflow, or URL-key behavior. WooCommerce’s Product Filters extension documentation describes configurable sources, query behavior, multi-select, and URL keys. In that extension, AND means every selected condition for an element must match, while OR accepts any selected condition.

Check current compatibility and cost before adopting it. Its [wcpf_filters] shortcode currently does not apply filtering functionality to WooCommerce Blocks, so do not assume a shortcode-based setup works with a block catalog.

Understand filter behavior shoppers will experience

Decision Why it matters
AND between dimensions A selection such as “Blue” plus “Large” narrows results to products matching both dimensions.
OR within one dimension Selecting “Blue” and “Green” usually accepts either value; Shopify supports AND for certain tag and list-metafield cases.
Instant update or reload Shopify and WooCommerce implementations may update results dynamically; WooCommerce can be set to use full-page reloads.
List, chips, or drawer The presentation affects scanning on desktop and access on small screens.
Counts and active selections Counts set expectations, while removable chips make it easy to revise or clear a search.

Test the storefront before publishing

  1. Open every intended collection and search page and confirm the filter control is visible.
  2. Select one value, then several values in the same filter, and verify the result logic matches your labels.
  3. Combine different dimensions such as price, size, and availability.
  4. Try a combination that should produce no products and check that the empty state is understandable.
  5. Remove one active value and then clear all selections.
  6. Confirm URL, page-update, or reload behavior does not lose the shopper’s choices.
  7. Repeat the checks on a phone-sized viewport, including opening and closing any filter drawer.
  8. Inspect a large collection or search result to ensure platform limits have not suppressed the controls.

Troubleshoot filters that are missing or ineffective

Shopify shows no filters

  • Confirm the filter was saved under Apps > Search & Discovery > Filters.
  • Verify the theme’s collection Product grid and search-results settings have filtering enabled.
  • Check that the theme or custom storefront supports Shopify filtering.
  • Check collection size, search-result count, and the shop’s default currency against Shopify’s documented limits.
  • For custom facets, verify metafield definitions and product or variant values.

WooCommerce shows an empty filter

  • Confirm products actually use the selected attribute, category, brand, tag, or rating.
  • Check that the block is in the active Product Catalog or relevant archive template and sits with Product Collection.
  • Review whether a mobile drawer or collapsed presentation is hiding the controls.
  • If using an extension, verify that its block or shortcode route matches your catalog implementation.

Which platform route fits your store?

Consideration Shopify WooCommerce
Native setup Search & Discovery app plus compatible theme settings. Product Filters block beside Product Collection in a block template.
Data sources Standard fields plus options, product/category/variant metafields, and metaobjects. Price, rating, attributes, availability, categories, brands, and tags in the core block.
Logic AND across dimensions; OR within a filter by default, with some configurable exceptions. Core block behavior is configured in the block; extension documentation exposes AND and OR modes.
Theme or template dependency Filters can be configured but remain invisible without theme or storefront support. Placement and behavior depend on the active block template; extension shortcodes do not filter WooCommerce Blocks.
Mobile behavior Determined by the compatible theme’s filter controls. The core block can collapse filters into a drawer.
Scale constraints Shopify documents explicit filter, value, collection, search, and currency limits. No equivalent limits are stated in the cited core block documentation.
