To invite a new teammate to your Slack workspace, click the workspace name in the sidebar, choose Invite people to…, enter their email address, and send the invitation. If the person already belongs to your workspace, add them directly to the channel they need instead. The right route depends on whether they need workspace-wide access, access to selected channels, or collaboration with another organization.
Choose the right way to add someone
| Who needs access | Use this route | Access scope |
|---|---|---|
| A new teammate joining your organization | Send a workspace email invitation, or use an approved-domain signup route if enabled. | Workspace membership |
| Someone already in your workspace | Add them from the channel’s member controls. | One or more selected channels |
| An outside collaborator who needs limited access | Invite them as a guest on an eligible paid plan. | Selected workspace channels |
| A person at another organization | Use Slack Connect to collaborate in a shared channel or DM. | Shared channel or direct message |
| A large Enterprise organization | Have an organization administrator add members through the organization directory or connect identity-provider groups. | Managed across the organization |
Workspace invitations and channel membership are separate: invite a new person to the workspace, then give them access to the channels they need. To add an existing workspace member, use channel controls rather than sending another workspace invitation. Slack’s invitation guide and channel instructions explain these routes.
Invite a new teammate by email
- In Slack on desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
- Select Invite people to….
- Enter the invitee’s email address.
- Click Send, then Done.
On mobile, open the DMs tab, tap the plus sign, choose Invite, enter an email address or select a contact, and send the invitation. Guest invitations cannot currently be sent from Slack’s mobile apps, according to Slack’s invitation instructions.

Permissions vary by plan and workspace settings. Slack’s current guidance says that on the Free plan, owners, admins, and members can invite new members by default. On Pro, Business+, and Enterprise, owners, admins, and members can invite members; owners and admins can also invite guests. An owner or admin can require approval, so the invite option may instead let you submit a request. Guest invitation requests always require owner or admin approval. See Slack’s invitation guide and its membership-request guidance.

Invitation duration and pending invites
Slack says a workspace invitation remains active for 30 days after it is sent. Owners and admins can resend pending invitations. On paid plans, owners and admins can also set default channels for new members. For guests, they can choose the channels available and an optional time limit. The 30-day invitation period is stated in Slack’s help guide; check it if the interface or settings have changed.
Add an existing member to a channel
If the person already has a Slack account in your workspace, open the channel rather than sending a new invitation.

- Desktop: Open the channel, click its member icon, then choose Add people.
- Mobile: Open the channel, tap its name, then tap Add.
- Select the people to add and confirm.
Slack says you can add up to 1,000 people to a channel at once. This is a channel-add limit, not a workspace invitation limit. Current steps and the limit appear in Slack’s channel-member instructions.

On Free, Pro, and Business+, a member with permission may be able to share an invitation link. Slack says each link is active for 30 days and can be used by up to 400 people. Anyone who has the link can join, so do not post it somewhere public or send it to people who should not have workspace access. Link invitations are unavailable when SSO is enabled, and Slack says Android cannot create invitation links. Availability and controls are described in Slack’s invitation guide.

Choose guest access or Slack Connect for outside collaborators
Guest: limited access inside your workspace
A guest is appropriate when an external person needs access to specific channels in your workspace. Guest invitations are available on eligible paid plans and are handled by workspace owners or admins; they can select channels and optionally set a time limit. Mobile guest invitations are not currently available. Start with Slack’s invitation instructions to check plan and permission requirements.
Slack Connect: collaboration between organizations
When the other person belongs to a separate organization and you need to work together across that boundary, Slack Connect supports shared channels or direct messages. It is distinct from making someone a member of your own workspace. See Slack’s Slack Connect overview for the collaboration options.
Rank #4
Allow people with approved email domains to join
On Free, Pro, and Business+, workspace owners and admins can approve email domains. People with an address on an approved domain can then join through the workspace signup link or sign-in page, rather than receiving an individual email invitation. This is a self-service join option, not a way to limit people to a particular channel. Slack says SSO overrides workspace signup preferences. Review Slack’s approved-domain instructions before enabling it.
What happens before an invite is accepted?
A person with a pending invitation does not yet have an active Slack account. Slack says the account becomes active when the invitee accepts and signs in to the workspace for the first time. Before that, they may be added to channels, mentioned, or sent direct messages. On paid plans, Slack says the invitee is not billed until becoming active. Some invitees can receive email notifications and reply to Slack messages by email, but Slack lists exceptions, including some social-domain email addresses and HIPAA-enabled workspaces. Details are in Slack’s guide to invited members.

Manage membership at Enterprise scale
For a centrally managed Enterprise team, an organization administrator can add individual organization members to a workspace or connect identity-provider groups. This is different from a member sending an individual invite: organization-level controls can manage access across workspaces. See Slack’s instructions for adding members to a workspace.
