Windows 11 Photos has no documented control for adding or removing an AI-generated watermark. Microsoft’s documented watermark settings are in Microsoft 365 account privacy controls and apply to eligible Microsoft 365 AI-generated or AI-altered content—not to arbitrary images opened in Photos. You can enable a visual watermark for eligible future content through the path for your account type; Microsoft’s guidance does not describe a way to erase a watermark already visible in an image.
What the Microsoft 365 watermark setting does—and does not do
Microsoft documents a setting for a visible watermark on content generated or altered with Microsoft 365 AI. It is separate from the Windows Photos app. Turning it on is not a universal switch that stamps every image you create or edit locally in Photos.
Microsoft also says disclosure information may be added to file metadata even when visual watermarks are turned off. A visible overlay and information embedded in a file are different things: changing the visual-watermark preference does not amount to removing existing pixels or clearing provenance information.

Turn on a watermark for eligible Microsoft 365 AI content
Choose the instructions that match the account you use. These settings concern Microsoft 365 AI-generated or AI-altered content; they do not add a watermark to every file edited in Photos.
Personal Microsoft account
- Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard.
- Open Privacy > Empower your productivity > Copilot.
- Turn on Include a watermark when content from Microsoft 365 is AI-generated.
Work or school account
- Sign in at myaccount.microsoft.com.
- Open My Account > Data and Privacy > Data options.
- Under Watermarks for AI-generated content, turn on Show watermark.
Can Photos remove a watermark already on an image?
Microsoft’s cited instructions do not document a retroactive erase action, and its Photos editing guidance does not list a dedicated watermark-removal command. Turning the account watermark setting off is not documented as a way to remove a mark already present in a file.

Photos offers editing features, and its Edit with Designer experience includes tools such as crop, object selection, and generative erase. Those tools are not documented as a watermark-removal workflow. Generative editing may change surrounding image content; it should not be presented as a guaranteed way to remove a mark cleanly.
Edit with Designer is an online experience that requires an internet connection, and its AI features require a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft lists English, Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese, German, and Italian as supported languages. Check Microsoft’s Designer instructions for current availability and requirements.

Do Photos AI features control watermarks?
No. On Copilot+ PCs, Photos features such as Restyle Image and Image Creator are AI editing and creation tools, not watermark-management settings. Microsoft’s availability and account requirements for these features are distinct from the Microsoft 365 account watermark preference. See Microsoft’s Photos Restyle Image and Image Creator FAQ for feature conditions, including its temporary South Korea availability update.
Quick Recap
Identify what kind of mark you are seeing
- Visible logo or “AI-Generated” text: This is an overlay you can see in the image. The Microsoft 365 preference controls whether a visual mark is included on eligible Microsoft 365 AI content; it is not a Photos switch.
- Provenance or disclosure information in the file: This is metadata rather than visible text or a logo. Microsoft says such information can be added even when visual watermarks are off.
- A mark on an existing image: The Microsoft guidance cited here does not give a supported retroactive removal procedure. Avoid treating the account toggle as an erase command.
