You can build a populated Obsidian knowledge base without composing notes in Obsidian’s editor. Obsidian stores a vault as a folder, so you can prepare Markdown files elsewhere and place them in that folder—or use the official Importer plugin to bring in Markdown, ZIP archives, and HTML. You may still need to review formatting, attachments, and links after import.
What “without writing in Obsidian” means
Obsidian’s notes are Markdown .md files. Its vault is a folder and its subfolders, so files created or edited elsewhere can live in a vault and be opened in Obsidian. This avoids composing notes in the Obsidian editor; it does not mean the notes require no preparation or cleanup. Choose how to add your material

Prepare notes outside the editor
Create or organize your Markdown files in another text editor or through an existing export. Keep one note per .md file when that suits your material, and use clear filenames so the vault’s file list remains navigable. If the files are already in the structure you want, placing them directly in the vault is the least transformative option.

If you are preparing a collection, group related files in folders before adding them. Keep associated attachments with the notes where practical, and use consistent note names and properties. This is organizational advice rather than a requirement imposed by Obsidian; the official documentation establishes that the vault itself is folder-based.
Add Markdown directly to the vault
- Locate the vault folder in your operating system’s file browser. If you have not created a vault yet, create one in Obsidian first so you know which folder to use.
- Move or copy your prepared Markdown files or folders into that vault folder, or drag them into Obsidian’s File explorer.
- Return to Obsidian and confirm the files appear in the File explorer. Open representative notes and check links, formatting, and attachments.
Direct placement is useful when the Markdown is already close to the form you want. It does not apply the Importer’s formatting, property, or template options.

Use Importer when you need transformation
- Install and enable Obsidian’s official Importer plugin through the community plugins settings.
- Open the Importer and select the supported source: individual Markdown files, a folder, or a ZIP archive. For HTML, use the HTML import workflow.
- Choose the available import settings. Depending on the source, these can include standardizing formatting, moving inline tags to properties, and applying a template.
- Inspect the preview before running the import, then review the imported notes and their connections in the vault.
Importer templates can control note names, properties, and note content. The preview shows up to ten samples and changes when you adjust settings or the template. Some attachments, remote items, and cross-note references may not be fully resolved until the import runs; a preview may retain a source link or show a placeholder in those cases. Importer can process HTML files or folders. Its HTML settings include an attachment size limit and a minimum image size, which can help skip small images such as icons and logos. Available extracted fields include author, title, URL, and page content. These controls do not guarantee that every website, dynamic page, or remote asset will be captured correctly. After import, check the note content and any images or links that matter to you. Obsidian’s HTML import guide explains the documented options.

Check the knowledge base after importing
- Files: Confirm expected notes and folders appear in the vault.
- Formatting: Look for broken headings, lists, or other formatting that changed during conversion.
- Links: Open internal links and check that cross-note references point to the intended files.
- Attachments: Confirm important images and other local files are present; remote assets may not resolve automatically.
- Properties and names: Verify that template-generated note names and properties match your intended organization.
Once the files are in the vault, Obsidian can work with them as notes. The key distinction is that preparing or importing files is separate from writing those notes inside the editor.
