In the US, open Add Money in the PayPal app and choose an available funding method, or use Wallet → Transfer Money → Add money from your bank or debit card on the website. The options, timing, and fees depend on your country and account eligibility; you may also be able to pay with a linked card or bank account without adding a balance first.
How to add money to a PayPal balance in the US
PayPal’s US instructions list bank transfers and eligible debit-card transfers as ways to add funds. You need a confirmed bank account for the bank-transfer route. Use the method offered in your own account, since availability and limits can vary.
- In the app: Open the account or balance area, tap Add Money, and select a bank or debit card if PayPal offers it.
- On the website: Go to Wallet → Transfer Money → Add money from your bank or debit card.
- Enter the amount, review the transfer details and any displayed limits, then follow the on-screen instructions.
PayPal’s US help page says eligible debit-card transfers are typically available in seconds. For a bank transfer, PayPal says funds usually take up to five business days; Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays do not count as business days. See PayPal’s US instructions and current options.

The same US help page lists debit-card add-money limits of up to $5,000 per day, $10,000 per week, and $20,000 per month. These are PayPal-published US limits, not a guarantee that every account or transfer method has those limits. Check the amount shown in your account before making a transfer.

Can you add cash to PayPal?
In the US, PayPal says eligible users can reload cash at participating retailers. Its help page lists Walmart, CVS, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar. PayPal says to generate a barcode in the app or use a PayPal debit card at the register, then give the cashier cash. The cited US instructions describe reloads of $20 to $500, with funds typically added within about 15 minutes. A fee applies and varies by store.
PayPal’s US overview describes cash reloads at more than 90,000 locations and a fee of up to $3.95. Those operational details are published by PayPal, but the page does not state a publication year. Check the fee and reload terms displayed by PayPal or the retailer when you use the service. PayPal’s US cash reload instructions and PayPal’s US overview of managing money have more information.

Can direct deposit or a payment add money?
For an eligible US PayPal Balance account, PayPal says you can find assigned account and routing numbers in settings and give them to an employer or another payer that supports direct deposit. PayPal says setup typically takes two pay cycles to begin, though the timing varies by payer. Payments received through PayPal may also be placed in a personal account’s balance and become available to spend. See PayPal’s US money-management overview and its US help page.

No. If you only want to pay a merchant, PayPal says you can link and confirm a bank account, debit card, or credit card, then select it as the funding source at checkout. That lets you pay through PayPal without first loading a stored PayPal balance. Follow PayPal’s instructions for linking a card or linking a bank account.

How country and account eligibility change the options
PayPal’s instructions are country-specific. In the UK, its help page says to select Wallet → Transfer Money → Add money to your balance and follow the instructions. PayPal says transfers typically take a few minutes but advises allowing up to three working days depending on the bank. This is separate from the US timing for bank transfers. Check PayPal UK’s instructions.
For Mainland China, PayPal’s cited help page says balance top-ups are currently unavailable, though linked credit or debit cards can be used to send payments. This illustrates why a method offered in one country should not be assumed to exist in another. See PayPal’s Mainland China help page.

What to do if Add Money is missing
If you are in the US and do not see an add-money option, PayPal says an account limitation or an identity-verification requirement may be involved. Check for notices or requests in your PayPal account, complete any requested steps, and contact PayPal if the option remains unavailable. Not every account will show every method.
