The method depends on where the image lives. In Word or PowerPoint, select the picture and use the built-in Insert > Link command. On a website, place the image inside an HTML <a href> element. In Markdown, wrap the image syntax in link brackets. In every case, test the destination and give the linked image meaningful alternative text.

Choose the instructions for your image

Where the image is used Correct method Possible destinations
Microsoft Word Select the picture, then Insert > Link (or right-click > Link) Web page, file, email address, or a location in the document
Microsoft PowerPoint Select the picture, then Insert > Link > Insert Link Web page, file, or another slide
Website HTML Wrap <img> in <a href> Web URL, file URL, or an on-page anchor
Markdown Put the image expression inside link brackets Web URL or another Markdown destination
Google Docs Verify the current editor before relying on image-link steps Official help consulted here documents text links, not a general image-link workflow

Link an image in Microsoft Word

Link to a web page or file

  1. Click the picture once so the picture itself—not surrounding text—is selected.
  2. On the ribbon, choose Insert > Link. You can also right-click the picture and choose Link.
  3. Enter the destination in the Address box.
  4. Confirm the dialog, then click the picture to verify that it opens the intended destination.

Use a complete address such as https://example.com/pricing for a web page. If you link to a local file, remember that the file may not exist on another person’s computer after you share the document.

Link to a place in the same document

  1. Select the picture and open Insert > Link.
  2. Choose Place in This Document.
  3. Select a listed heading, bookmark, or other available destination.
  4. Confirm and test the jump from the document’s normal reading view.

If Word does not show the link

  • Select the picture itself rather than a paragraph, caption, or text box.
  • Reopen the Link dialog and check that the address contains no accidental spaces.
  • Save, close, and reopen the document if the link appears correct but does not activate.
  • Test a copied version of the file before distributing it, especially when the destination is a local file.

Make a picture clickable in Microsoft PowerPoint

Link to a web page or existing file

  1. Select the picture on the slide.
  2. Choose Insert > Link > Insert Link.
  3. In the dialog, select Existing File or Web Page.
  4. Enter the web address or browse to the file, then confirm.
  5. In Normal view, right-click the picture and choose Open Hyperlink to test it.

Link to another slide

  1. Select the picture and open Insert > Link > Insert Link.
  2. Choose Place in This Document.
  3. Select the target slide and confirm.
  4. Run the slide show and click the picture to confirm that it reaches the intended slide.

Important file-sharing limitation

If the picture opens a local file, that file must travel with the presentation. Moving only the .pptx file to another computer can leave the link pointing at a path that does not exist there. Put the presentation and its linked files in a known folder, move the complete folder, and test on the destination computer.

Add a clickable image with HTML

Use a genuine anchor element with an href around the image:

<a href="https://example.com/destination">
<img src="graphic.jpg" alt="Description that conveys the image or link purpose">
</a>

What each part does

  • href is the destination opened when the visitor activates the link.
  • src identifies the image file.
  • alt supplies a text alternative for people who cannot see the image and acts as the image-link text in Google’s guidance.

Keep the anchor around only the content that should be clickable. If the image is decorative but the surrounding text already states the destination, use alt text that fits that context; do not stuff keywords into it. If the image is the only link content, the alt text should communicate the link’s purpose, such as “Download the annual report” rather than “blue report cover.”

Internal sections and files

An on-page destination can use a fragment, for example href="#installation", provided the page contains an element with id="installation". A downloadable file can be linked with its URL in the same way. Confirm that the file is publicly reachable and that its server sends an appropriate content type.

Why not use only JavaScript?

Do not make a script event the sole indication that an image is a link. A real <a href> gives browsers, keyboard users, assistive technology, and crawlers a recognizable link. Script can enhance the interaction, but it should not replace the anchor for a normal destination.

Make an image clickable in Markdown

Put the image expression inside link brackets:

[![A descriptive image label](graphic.jpg)](https://example.com/destination)

Understand the nested syntax

  • The inner ![...] is the image. Its text is the image’s alternative label.
  • The outer [...] turns that image into a link.
  • The final parentheses contain the destination URL.

Replace both the image path and destination with your own values:

[![Download the product guide](images/guide-cover.webp)](/downloads/product-guide.pdf)

CommonMark, GitHub, Obsidian, VS Code, and Pandoc support this general pattern, but Markdown renderers can differ in extensions and path handling. Preview the result in the exact system where it will be published.

Use good alt text and link purpose

For a linked image, alt text has two jobs: it describes the image when the image cannot be seen, and it tells a visitor what activating the link will do. Google Search Central says it uses an image’s alt attribute as anchor text when the image is a link.

  • Action link: alt="Download the installation guide"
  • Product link: alt="View the compact wireless keyboard"
  • Article thumbnail: alt="Read How to back up a Windows PC"
  • Decorative image beside a text link: use an empty alt value only when the adjacent text already provides the link and the image adds no information.

Do not repeat a keyword list, filename, or visual details that do not help someone decide whether to follow the link. The wording should match the surrounding context and the destination.

Choose the right destination

External web page

Use the canonical HTTPS URL when possible. Check that the page is public, does not require a session that other readers lack, and still exists after publication.

Internal document or slide

Use Word’s Place in This Document or PowerPoint’s Place in This Document options. These destinations are more reliable than manually typing a file path or slide number.

Downloadable file

Link to the file’s stable location and test the download with an account that is not already signed in. For presentations, keep linked local files with the presentation when moving or sharing it.

Test before publishing or sharing

  1. Activate the image with a mouse or trackpad.
  2. Navigate to it with a keyboard and press Enter or Space as appropriate.
  3. Confirm the destination, not merely that something opened.
  4. Test in the final delivery format: exported PDF, slide show, published site, or rendered Markdown.
  5. Check the image at mobile width and at high zoom so the clickable area remains understandable.
  6. For local files, test on a second computer or user account after moving the complete folder.

Common problems and fixes

Clicking selects the image instead of opening the link

That is normal while editing Word or PowerPoint. Use the application’s link-testing command, switch to reading or slide-show mode, or right-click and choose the open-link option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The link opens the wrong page

Reopen the link dialog and inspect the complete address, including the path, query string, and fragment. Replace copied smart quotes or stray spaces with ordinary URL characters.

The web image is visible but not clickable

Inspect the rendered HTML. The image must be inside an <a href="..."> element; an onclick handler alone is not an equivalent link.

The image has no useful accessible name

Add concise, purpose-based alt text to the linked image. If nearby text already names the destination and the image is purely decorative, avoid duplicating that text.

A PowerPoint link breaks after sharing

The target was probably a local file whose path changed. Move the linked file with the presentation, use a stable web URL, and test the copied presentation on the receiving computer.

Markdown displays text instead of the image

Check the nesting and punctuation: the image must start with ![, its path must be inside the first parentheses, and the destination must be in a second pair of parentheses. Then preview with the target renderer.

Google Docs instructions do not match

The Google Docs Editors Help material consulted for this guide explains creating, editing, and removing text links in Docs, Sheets, and Slides; it does not document a general workflow for attaching a hyperlink directly to an image. Do not assume the text-link steps apply to pictures. Verify the current Docs interface before publishing a Google Docs-specific procedure.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean screenshot of a destination page to use as a linked graphic, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It is a screenshot service, so you still add the hyperlink in Word, PowerPoint, HTML, or Markdown using the methods above.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. The equivalent Python and Node.js calls are:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
  • Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; every feature is on every plan.

Quick decision checklist

  • Use Word or PowerPoint’s Link command for office documents and presentations.
  • Use a real HTML anchor for web pages.
  • Use nested link-and-image syntax in Markdown.
  • Write alt text that explains the destination or action.
  • Test in the final viewing or publishing environment.
  • Keep local presentation files together when a picture opens one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one image link to more than one destination?

A single click target normally has one destination. To offer several choices, place separate linked images or add nearby text links with distinct purposes.

Can I make only part of an image clickable?

Word and PowerPoint generally link the selected picture as one object. On a website, use separate elements or an image map only when the extra complexity is justified; label each destination clearly.

Does adding a hyperlink change the image file itself?

No. The link belongs to the document, slide, HTML, or Markdown markup that contains the image. Replacing the image file does not automatically preserve or remove the surrounding link.
