You add HBO Max to Amazon Prime by subscribing through Prime Video, not through your Prime membership. HBO Max is a paid channel subscription inside Prime Video. Sign in to Prime Video on the web, open Subscriptions, select HBO Max, and follow the prompts. Once it is active, you can watch HBO Max titles in Prime Video, or connect Prime Video as the provider in the HBO Max app.
What you need before you start
- An active Prime Video account, signed in to the Amazon account you want the subscription attached to.
- A Prime Video account in a market where HBO Max is offered as a channel. Amazon’s guide lists the United States and a range of international Prime Video markets, and warns that availability varies, so check your own account.
- A willingness to pay. HBO Max is an additional subscription. It is not included just because you have Prime Video or an Amazon Prime membership.
Subscribe to HBO Max through Prime Video
Amazon’s current U.S. instructions, in its guide updated September 17, 2026, use the web version of Prime Video. Other devices may show different menus, so use the web path if the app layout differs.
- Open Prime Video in a web browser and sign in to the Amazon account you want to use.
- Select Subscriptions in the top navigation.
- Find HBO Max by browsing the channel list or searching for it.
- Open the HBO Max listing, choose an offered plan, and follow the on-screen prompts to subscribe.
- Before you confirm, check the monthly price, the billing period, and that the plan is offered in your country.
Watch HBO Max after you subscribe
There are two ways to watch, and the setup for each is different.
Inside Prime Video
After you subscribe, HBO Max content is available within Prime Video. You do not need a separate HBO Max login for this route. Use Prime Video to browse and play the content.

Inside the HBO Max app
- Download the HBO Max app on your device.
- Before you sign in, select Connect your provider and choose Prime Video.
- Sign in and watch. This step is needed for a Prime Video Channels subscription. Without it, the HBO Max app will not recognize the Prime Video subscription.

Cancel the subscription
Cancellation depends on who bills the subscription. The HBO Max Help Center documents the following steps for Prime Video Channels in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. Confirm your billing provider first, and if you are in another market, check your account for the cancellation option.
- Open Manage Your Prime Video Channels.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Find HBO Max under Your Channels.
- Select Cancel Channel.
If you already pay HBO Max directly
A Prime Video Channels subscription and a direct HBO Max subscription are separate. Neither Amazon’s guide nor the HBO Max help pages say that an existing direct subscription transfers to Prime Video or links to your Amazon account. Check your HBO Max account before you subscribe through Prime Video, so you do not pay twice for the same service.

When you compare the two routes, these are the points to check:
- Availability: whether HBO Max is offered as a channel in your country.
- Plan and price: which plan and monthly price your account is offered.
- Where you watch and manage it: Prime Video, the HBO Max app after connecting Prime Video, or both.
- Where you cancel: the billing provider for your subscription.
The sources do not establish differences in catalog, features, or eligibility between direct and channel subscriptions, so do not assume any.

Background: HBO Max returns to Prime Video in the U.S.
Amazon announced on December 6, 2022 that HBO Max was launching on Prime Video in the United States. Cem Sibay, vice president of Prime Video, said: “Now with the addition of HBO Max again, customers can easily add this subscription and enjoy even more award-winning and fan favorite entertainment on Prime Video.” That announcement is historical. It does not confirm current pricing or availability.

Common problems
- HBO Max does not appear in Subscriptions. Availability varies by market, so the channel may not be offered in your country. Check your Prime Video account’s region.
- Plan names or prices do not match this article. Amazon’s figures are from its guide updated September 17, 2026. Use the subscriptions page for current prices.
- The HBO Max app does not show your subscription. Reopen the app and select Connect your provider before you sign in.
