Yes—if a straightforward interactive map or Street View display meets your needs, the Google Maps Embed API is free with unlimited requests. You still need an API key and a Google Cloud project with billing enabled for setup. Other Google Maps Platform APIs have different pricing and may incur charges.
Which Google Maps option is free?
The no-charge option for a basic website map is the Maps Embed API. Google says Embed API requests are free with unlimited usage. It displays an interactive map or Street View panorama in an iframe.
That rule applies to the Embed API, not every Google Maps product. If you need a custom, dynamic map or a map image, check the pricing for the specific API and SKU you plan to use.
| Option | What it displays | Usage event and cost note | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maps Embed API | Interactive map or Street View panorama in an iframe | Google says requests are free with unlimited usage; API key and billing-enabled project setup are required. | A basic location map or panorama where the iframe features are sufficient. |
| Maps JavaScript API | A dynamic map that developers can customize | A displayed map counts as a map load; applicable costs and free usage depend on the SKU. | A site that needs custom map behavior or a more tailored experience. |
| Maps Static API | A map image rather than an interactive iframe | Each requested static map image counts as a map load; check the applicable SKU pricing. | A site that needs a non-interactive map image. |
Google’s Maps Platform documentation describes the APIs and their usage. For a customized map or image, estimate likely billable events and compare them with the exact SKU’s current pricing before choosing it.

Does free mean you can skip billing setup?
No. Maps Embed API requests themselves are free, but Google’s Embed API quickstart says to enable billing on the Google Cloud project. You also need a valid API key. Billing setup is not the same as a charge for Embed API requests.
How to add a basic map with the Embed API
- Create or select a project in Google Cloud, then enable the Maps Embed API.
- Create an API key for the project.
- Add an iframe to the page, using the required key and a location query in its
srcURL. Follow Google’s quickstart for the current URL format and parameters. - Restrict the API key to the website and API that need it, then monitor its usage in Google Cloud.
The iframe is the practical starting point when an embedded map or Street View display does what your site needs. If you move to a different Maps Platform API for custom features, review that API’s pricing separately.

What do the free usage caps cover for other APIs?
Google Maps Platform Core Services use pay-as-you-go pricing based on billable events and associated SKUs. The free usage cap is per SKU, not a blanket monthly allowance for every API in a project. Google says caps reset on the first day of each month at midnight Pacific time; volume discounts apply automatically at higher usage levels. India pricing has separate caps and eligibility rules.

| Pricing category | Standard monthly free cap | India monthly cap, where eligible |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials | 10,000 requests per SKU, except Map Tiles API SKUs, which have a 100,000-request cap. | Generally 70,000 requests per SKU; Map Tiles Essentials has a 700,000-request cap. |
| Pro | 5,000 requests per SKU. | 35,000 requests per SKU. |
| Enterprise | 1,000 requests per SKU. | 7,000 requests per SKU. |
These are category-level caps for listed SKUs, not a promise that any particular website’s map use will be free. Confirm the exact SKU, your billing location and account eligibility on Google’s current pricing page before estimating a bill.
Google replaced its former monthly $200 credit with SKU-specific free usage caps effective March 1, 2025. The old credit should not be treated as a current allowance. Google’s pay-as-you-go documentation explains the billing model; the cost of non-Embed usage depends on the APIs, billable events, usage volume and applicable pricing.

How to reduce the risk of unexpected charges
- Restrict API keys: Limit a key to the intended websites and APIs. Google says customers are financially responsible for charges caused by abuse of unrestricted keys.
- Monitor usage: Review API metrics and quotas so you can spot unexpected activity.
- Set a budget and alerts: A Cloud Billing alert notifies you when spending reaches a threshold; it does not automatically guarantee that usage will stop.
- Use quotas for a hard limit: A quota can cap usage, but reaching it may cause the service to stop responding.
Google’s guidance on Maps API security best practices and Cloud Billing budgets explains these controls.

Free requests do not mean unrestricted use of Google map content. Google says Maps Embed API use remains subject to the Google Maps Platform Terms of Service, including its License Restrictions. If your use involves storing imagery, extracting tiles, redistributing map content or otherwise going beyond a normal embed, check the current terms and the documentation for the specific API before proceeding.
