The easiest way to add checkout fields depends on whether your store uses the Checkout block or the legacy checkout shortcode. First identify which checkout is on your site; then use the block’s built-in controls, a compatible field-editor extension, or a developer customization that targets the right checkout.
First, identify your checkout type
WooCommerce uses the Checkout block by default on new installs, but a store can still use the legacy checkout shortcode. The two types have different editing controls and extension compatibility, so confirm which one your checkout page uses before changing fields. WooCommerce’s Checkout documentation distinguishes the legacy checkout customizer from the site editor used for the block.
Checkout block
Edit the checkout page in the WordPress site editor and select the Checkout block. WooCommerce’s Checkout block documentation describes settings for built-in Company, Address Line 2, and Phone fields, including visibility and whether some fields are required. The block’s fields can vary with the customer’s order and store settings. WooCommerce also says to designate the checkout page in WooCommerce’s advanced settings for the block to function properly.

The legacy checkout uses WooCommerce’s checkout customizer settings for built-in fields. Those controls can make supported fields required, optional, or hidden. For additional fields, use a field-editor extension documented for legacy checkout or implement a customization for that checkout type.

Choose the right way to add a field

Do not assume an extension supports both checkout types just because its name includes “Checkout Field Editor.” WooCommerce Marketplace documentation describes products with different compatibility: one editor is explicitly for legacy checkout, while another documents support for Cart and Checkout Blocks. Check the specific extension’s current documentation before installing it.
For example, the Marketplace documentation for Conditional Checkout Fields & Edit Checkout Fields for WooCommerce describes 26 field types, including text, number, email, select, checkbox, radio, date/time, file upload, URL, and VAT number, and states compatibility with classic checkout and Cart/Checkout Blocks. The same documentation says WooCommerce core supports four additional field types on Cart and Checkout Blocks—text, select, checkbox, and date—and that conditional visibility is available from WooCommerce 9.9.0, expressed as JSON Schema rules in PHP. These are product and version details from that documentation; check its current requirements and compatibility before relying on them.

By contrast, the WooCommerce Marketplace’s Checkout Field Editor documentation explicitly says that extension works with legacy checkout only. Compatibility statements can change, so verify the live listing for the extension and your installed WooCommerce version.

A field should collect information you will actually use. Before configuring it, decide:

- Purpose: What decision or fulfillment task depends on the answer?
- Location: Which checkout section should contain it?
- Type and label: Choose a suitable data type and explain plainly what the customer should enter.
- Requirement and validation: Decide whether the field is optional or required, and what counts as a valid answer.
- Order handling: Confirm where staff will see the submitted value and how they will use it after purchase.
Order-data behavior is extension-specific. For instance, WooCommerce’s documentation for the legacy Checkout Field Editor says added custom field data appears in WooCommerce order details; verify the equivalent behavior for the particular plugin and store configuration you use.
Configure and test the checkout
After choosing the block controls, extension, or developer implementation for your checkout type, test the complete purchase flow rather than checking only whether the new field appears.

- Check customer-facing display. Confirm the label, placement, and layout on desktop and mobile.
- Test field rules. Try valid and invalid values, and confirm optional fields can be left blank while required fields cannot.
- Place a test order. Verify the value is saved and visible where staff need it in the order record.
- Check checkout interactions. Confirm the field behaves correctly with shipping choices, payment methods, and other checkout extensions.
This testing matters especially for block checkout: WooCommerce warns that extensions relying on hooks to add checkout markup, including custom fields, usually need integration work for Cart and Checkout Blocks. Its customization documentation describes block extensibility interfaces as under active development, so a hook-based customization should not be assumed to work unchanged.

If you want to offer an optional service such as gift wrapping, rush handling, a tip, or a gift message, an add-on extension may fit better than a general-purpose custom field editor. WooCommerce’s Checkout Add-Ons documentation covers those use cases and states that the extension had not yet been updated for Cart and Checkout Blocks in its documented status. Check the live documentation for current compatibility before choosing it.
