Yes. In the library-style Windows Media Player 12, drag an image from File Explorer onto the album-art area in Music. The steps differ in the newer Media Player app, so first check which player you have; the newer app does not necessarily expose the same controls.
First identify which player you’re using
Windows 11 can have both the newer Media Player app and the older, library-style Windows Media Player. Microsoft introduced the newer Media Player as a replacement for Groove Music in its rollout, while the legacy player remained available through Windows Tools. Their artwork controls are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s announcement describes the newer app and its album-art playback views.
- If you see a music library with a Music view and album-art placeholders, follow the Windows Media Player 12 steps below.
- If you opened the newer Media Player app, see its section below rather than looking for WMP12 controls.
Add a local image in Windows Media Player 12
- Open Windows Media Player and select Music.
- Find the album or tracks in the library. If the files are not shown, make sure their folder is included in the player’s library locations before continuing.
- In File Explorer, select the image you want to use, then drag it onto the album-art placeholder or icon in the WMP Music library.
- Check that the image appears on the intended album.
A Microsoft Q&A answer by Independent Advisor Mario Bressan (June 25, 2022) describes dragging an image to the Album Art icon. SanDisk’s support directions also document dragging image files into the WMP12 library. These are instructions for the legacy library-style player, not a guarantee that the newer Media Player has the same interface. Microsoft Q&A · SanDisk support
Artwork is often handled at album level in a library. If tracks are grouped under incorrect or inconsistent album information, check that grouping before dropping the image so it is associated with the intended album. That is a practical precaution; the cited instructions do not guarantee how every installation will apply art to differently tagged files.

Use the older Windows Media Player 11 method only if it is available
Older WMP11 versions used the Advanced Tag Editor. The legacy route described in the cited guidance is:
- In the library, right-click the file or files and choose Advanced Tag Editor.
- Open the Image or Picture tab, depending on the version.
- Select Add, choose the artwork file, then select Apply and OK (some versions describe only selecting OK).
These labels come from older WMP11 instructions and may not appear in Windows 10 or 11 installations. The Q&A and SanDisk support pages document these legacy steps; they are not instructions for the newer Media Player app.

What to do in the newer Media Player app
Microsoft’s announcement says the newer app displays album art in playback views, but it is not a current click-by-click guide for adding a local cover image. Check whether your installed app has an Edit info control for the album. If it does not let you add or retain a local image, use a tag editor that explicitly writes artwork into MP3 metadata. The available guidance does not establish a universal local-artwork workflow for every current Media Player version.

Windows Media Player can look up album information online. In the Player Library, right-click the album and choose Find album info. If the correct album appears, select it and follow the prompts to update the album art and media information. Microsoft notes that a generic music icon on a matching album means its artwork is unavailable for download; for an unmatched album or a custom release, add local artwork instead. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player instructions document the lookup and its limitations.

If lookup fails because online media information is disabled, Microsoft’s WMP instructions give this path: Organize > Options > Privacy, then enable Update music files by retrieving media info from the Internet. This setting and menu path apply to Windows Media Player; do not assume they exist in the newer app.
If the artwork does not appear
- The album is missing from the library: Check that its folder is included in the player’s library locations, then retry.
- The wrong album gets the image: Check the album grouping and metadata before applying art; library artwork may follow the album grouping rather than the individual file you intended.
- Online lookup shows a generic icon: Microsoft says the art is unavailable for download for that entry. Use a local image.
- The newer app has no local artwork control: Do not follow WMP12 or WMP11 menu instructions in that app. Use a tag editor that explicitly writes artwork into MP3 metadata if embedding is your goal.
- Windows Media Player or media features are missing: If you use Windows 10 or 11 N, those editions exclude Windows Media Player and related media technologies, including metadata such as album art. Displaying cover art is not always the same as embedding it
A player can show art associated with an album in its library without proving that the image is embedded in each MP3 file. If you need the cover to travel with the audio when you copy it to another app or device, use a tool that explicitly writes artwork into the MP3’s metadata, then check the file in the destination player. The cited player instructions do not guarantee how every current app or installation stores or exports artwork.
