To add a column in File Explorer, open the folder in Details view, open the column chooser, select the property you want, and confirm. Depending on your Windows interface, the chooser may be called Choose Details or opened by right-clicking a column heading and selecting More.
Show the folder in Details view

Open the folder whose file list you want to change.

Switch the folder to Details view. File details appear as columns in this layout. Microsoft’s File Explorer help identifies Details as a view available in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Add a column

Open the column chooser. In the older Windows Explorer menu, choose View > Choose Details. If that command is not available, right-click an existing column heading and select More.

Select the checkbox beside the property you want to display, then select OK. Clear a property’s checkbox to remove its column.
The wording and location of the chooser can vary between Windows interface generations. Microsoft’s detailed instructions use the older Windows Explorer labels; its general File Explorer help covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 but does not specify every current column-picker label.

Choose, reorder, and resize columns
Pick a useful property
The column chooser can include properties such as Owner, Name, Size, Type, Date Modified, Status, Attributes, Author, Title, Subject, Category, Pages, Comments, Copyright, Date Created, Date Accessed, Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, Genre, Duration, Bit Rate, Protected, Camera Model, Date Picture Taken, Dimensions, Company, Description, File Version, Product Name, and Product Version. Name, Size, Type, and Modified are enabled by default in Microsoft’s detailed column instructions.

Change the order
In the chooser, select a column entry without clearing its checkbox, then use Move Up or Move Down to reposition it.

Adjust the width
Select the column in the chooser and enter a width in pixels, or drag the boundary between column headings in the file list.

A property may not be offered for every file type, and a displayed column may have no value when the file does not contain that metadata. Microsoft Support notes: “Not all file formats will support these additional column settings.” For example, a Word document can contain Author information while a Notepad document cannot. Changing the view or adding the column does not create metadata that is absent from the file.

If a property is missing or empty, check whether the file format supports it and whether the file has that information. Microsoft’s detailed instructions are in How to Change Column Settings in Windows Explorer.
