The best way to add an SD card to an Android phone is to insert a microSD card into the phone’s built-in slot—if that exact model and regional variant has one. If it does not, a USB OTG card reader can provide access to card files while connected, but it does not add permanent internal storage. A USB flash drive works similarly for portable file access.
1. Check whether your exact phone supports a microSD card
Before buying anything, check the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact phone model and regional variant. Android phones do not all have a microSD slot, and maximum card capacity and supported features can vary by model and region. Do not assume that every phone in a product family has the same slot or capacity limit.
Samsung’s support pages illustrate why the model and region matter: its UK guidance scopes its capacity table to phones sold in the UK or Ireland and notes that specifications can differ elsewhere. Its Canadian guidance has a separate list of supported models and capacities, including some limits up to 1 TB; that figure applies to the listed Canadian models, not to Samsung phones generally. Check the relevant manufacturer page for your own device before choosing a card: Samsung Canada’s model and capacity guide and Samsung UK’s regional capacity guide.

If your phone has a microSD slot, this is the most direct way to expand its storage. Follow the phone’s tray instructions and insert the card in the correct orientation. Then use the setup prompt, if one appears, or open the phone’s storage settings to configure the card.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
- Check the phone’s exact model specifications for the supported card type and maximum capacity.
- Back up any files already on the card. Formatting it erases its contents.
- Insert the card using the instructions for your phone’s SIM or card tray.
- Choose a storage mode if the phone offers one. Select portable storage for files you want to move between devices. Choose internal or adoptable storage only if you need app storage and understand the trade-offs.
Card families describe capacity ranges, not what every phone can accept: Samsung lists microSD cards as up to 2 GB, microSDHC as up to 32 GB, and microSDXC as over 32 GB up to 2 TB. Those are family definitions, not a guarantee that a particular handset supports the maximum. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of its capacity and read/write capability; still check your phone’s specification and match the card’s speed to your intended use. See Samsung’s US guidance on microSD card types and compatibility.
3. Choose portable or internal storage carefully
Portable storage is the practical choice for photos, videos, and other files you may want to remove or use elsewhere. It does not install apps. Internal, or adoptable, storage can hold apps on devices that offer the feature, but the card becomes tied to that phone rather than serving as a card you can freely transfer between devices. Google explains the distinction and warns that formatting permanently deletes the card’s data in its Android SD card setup guide.

- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
| Storage choice | Useful for | Move between devices? | Can hold apps? | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portable SD storage | Photos, videos, and files | Yes, if the other device is compatible | No | Requires a built-in slot; formatting erases data |
| Internal/adoptable SD storage | Files and, on supported phones, apps | No; it is tied to the phone | Yes, on devices that offer the feature | Formatting erases data. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage. |
| USB OTG card reader or USB storage | Temporary access, copying, and transferring files | The device can be removed and connected elsewhere if compatible | Not equivalent to installed app storage | Requires a compatible phone, connector, reader or drive, and file system |
Samsung states that not all of its devices support microSD and that its Android devices do not support adoptable storage. Availability of storage modes is manufacturer- and device-specific; do not assume your phone offers both. See Samsung’s device-specific support guidance.

4. Use a USB OTG microSD card reader if there is no slot
A compatible USB OTG card reader is the closest workaround when your phone lacks a built-in slot. Connect the reader to the phone’s port, insert the microSD card, and browse its files with a file-management app. This provides access to an attached card while connected; it does not turn the card into permanent internal phone storage or make it equivalent to an installed SD card.

- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Increase your TV show, movie, and Full HD video[4] recording collections dramatically with up to a massive 1.5TB[1].
- Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].
Google says USB storage can be accessed on Android 7.0 (Nougat) and later with Files by Google. The app supports browsing, copying, moving, renaming, and deleting files. Compatibility can also depend on the phone’s port, the adapter and reader, power requirements, and the card’s file system, so operation is not guaranteed for every combination. See Google Files Help’s USB storage instructions. Samsung also documents using a Type-A-to-Type-C adapter that supports USB OTG to connect a flash drive and transfer files on Galaxy devices: Samsung’s USB Type-C cable and adapter guide.

A USB flash drive or other compatible USB storage device follows the same external-storage approach: connect it to the phone and manage files while it is attached. This can be convenient for moving or carrying files, but it is not an SD card installed in the phone and does not provide installed app storage. The drive occupies the phone’s port while connected unless you have a compatible hub or adapter.

What to check before choosing a card or reader
- Phone compatibility: Verify the exact model and regional variant, including whether it has a slot or supports USB OTG.
- Capacity and card family: Follow the phone’s supported capacity and format specifications rather than choosing by headline capacity alone.
- Task and speed: Consider whether you need ordinary file storage or high-resolution video recording, then match card speed to the phone’s requirements.
- Portability: Choose portable storage if you need to move files between compatible devices; adoptable storage is tied to the phone.
- App storage: Confirm that the phone offers adoptable storage before relying on a card for apps. Samsung Android devices do not offer it.
- Data safety: Back up the card before formatting or changing its storage mode, because formatting erases its contents.
